He just sent the last text: I'm at the base mom. I love you.
Gah. Boot camp.
I am more effected by this than I thought...more than when he left to go to school.
***Update may be too strong of a word for it...
...but last night, around 2 am, I got what has to be the sweetest text a mom could ever get. And considering it came from my extremely non-communicative kid-it is even sweeter. Basically he told me that I was an amazing mom, that he loved me and that he appreciated that I put up with all his antics. (I suspect that it was the equivalent to the I got here and am okay phone call that they are allowed.)
Made me boo-hoo in the middle of the night, and frankly a bit of a boo-hooing during today too.

Very cool Was he allowed to take his phone? Or do they send it back with the rest of his civilian stuff? I was totally out of the whole thing. He left from school (8 hours away) so I have no idea if he was allowed to bring his phone or not. I guess we will find out if they make him send it home.  |

Ugh...I'll be in your shoes in August. I'm probably going to be a mess as she's my only. I just keep telling myself she's probably safer in the military than away at college, right? Right?

Expect some emotional phone calls- boot camp is very trying, and he will miss you, and home, and everything else, more than he thought possible. I was out of my parents home 2 years before joining the Army but boot camp made me miss them more than anything else. It is also one of the things I am most proud of, my military service, and he will be, too.

It's long, hard and lonely but one if the best things for so many of our young men and women. My dh has pushed boots twice and even though he was tough he cared about his recruits  Hang in there and know people are watching out for him while he's away. |

Would it be weird to say sort of? At this point, he has joined the National Guard. He did that so that he could go to school and serve at the same time. I think though, at this point, he has realized that he may not be as ready for school as he thought, and would prefer to go active duty. It isn't as easy as just switching from one to the other, but it is something that he is discussing with his recruiter. In the mean time, as part of the Guard, he goes through the regular boot camp this summer. If he can't switch, then he will start taking ROTC classes when he gets back to school. Personally, I think that he wanted to go the active duty route to begin with but tried to compromise with what his dad wanted-college. |

I've sent one off to basic training in 2011 and send another next month. Both of mine are Navy boys. The older one's ship deploys to the Middle East this fall. Ack.
Military service is definitely a commitment by an entire family. It's not just the young man or woman who goes. It's all the rest of us standing behind them -- proud and terrified all at the same time.
I hope his boot camp goes well for him... and you too!

I know, intellectually, that the boy is really a 'grown ass man' who can make his own decisions and choices in life-I tried to raise him that way. He no longer is required to get permission to do what he wants and doesn't need (or want) his mother hanging over his shoulder. But...he will always be the gapped tooth little kid who climbed in my lap for snuggles while we were reading Harry Potter to me. It will be forever reassuring to me that someone else cares about his success or failure. Tough? Oh please YES. That child could use a good dose of tough reality-but knowing that comes from someone who is tough, but wants him to succeed? That is great news. So thank you for this... |

Hugs to you, Mama, from another who has been there. Boot camp was rough on me, I won't lie. Part of it was that both of my sons left for Navy boot camp at almost the same time...they left two weeks apart, and were there November-January. I worried so much about my older son, who was still living at home, not going to college, very much a homebody. Turns out it was my younger son, the "tough" one, who had the hardest time at boot camp. Which was hard on ME. He would sometimes call home in tears, and his letters were soooooo pitiful. The thing that helped the most was that we were able to spend Christmas Day with them so I could see for myself they were okay. Graduation days were probably the most emotional days of my life...right up there with the day they were born. LOL
My younger son ended up being discharged early, but my older son is stationed in Japan, and that is hard too. I've seen him twice in 2 1/2 years. Last year, his ship was deployed from June-November, I had no idea where he was at, and rarely heard from him, and that was hard, too. He's not in danger of going to the middle East, but he's also not far from Russia and Korea, which scares me at times. But, gosh, what the Navy has done for that guy! Holy Moly. My son who pretty much only left the house to go to work now goes mountain hiking, rock climbing...he is truly embracing his time in Japan and has had some amazing experiences. He has also become a photography buff, has a great camera, and I live vicariously through the photos he posts on facebook.
Sorry for that long-winded response! I wish your son the best of luck in his military career, and I wish you luck and peace while he is away at boot camp. Thankfully, once the beginning few weeks were over, I settled down and looked very forward to the one day a week I would get mail from them! |

Sorry that you're going through the momma blues. I've not experienced it as a mom, but as a girlfriend. It's a tough road, but you both will be so proud on graduation day. Congrats on raising a son who is willing to serve others in this way - go mom!
