I have to have my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. I have a "fragile TMJ" muscle according to the dentist, to me it just means my jaw hurts like a SOAB when I have dental work done. In the last couple of years he's suggested using a bite blocker when I have to have work done, so I don't have to open as wide. It's helped tremendously, but I'm still nervous about what tomorrow will bring.
He recommended the specialist, and they're knocking me out. (no way no how would I just have a local). I've had teeth extracted before, I know what to expect. I've still had a pit in my stomach since this morning. I just want to get this done. I keep thinking summer is coming, the pool is opening, I have a conference I'm going to attend in Charleston, one of my all time favorite cities, coming this summer. Lets just get through this.
I have every marvel film we own set out and I hope to be able to sit in bed tomorrow and watch Iron Man through Guardians while hopped up on pain killers. I keep thinking Chris Evans can distract me from anything right?
No point to this, other than I'm just nervous.
**Update post op ** home and in very little pain. staff and specialist were great, they started with laughing gas as they put the IV in, and the last thing I remember was the doc saying ok little prick as the iv needle went in and thinking ok, I should be out. . . next thing I know the nurse is looking over me saying ready to go to recovery? I'm staying on top of the pain meds and have an ice pack on the side where they took both top and bottom (other side they only took the bottom). Only discomfort is on that side and it's more tender than painful.
Interestingly the doc gave me an anti-nausea med if I needed it and a mouthwash to use for the next week.
Thanks for the kind thoughts guys, Tony Stark is battling evil on my tv at the moment, and I have soup in the house for dinner. I'm just so happy to be on the flip side of this and ready to move on.

You won't feel a thing. You'll be happily snoozing. One of my kids had the surgery last fall and it took 20 minutes and that was w/impacted wisdom teeth. There was very little discomfort after that, just a hungry teenager who was on a soft diet. Hoping it's easy for you, too.
You'll be on the good drugs and hopefully can enjoy your movie marathon. Take good, loving care of yourself and I wish you an easy surgery and recovery.

Ok me <------>son . I won't talk about my experience but it's a good thing my dentist is dead.
My son just had his out. He was "uncomfortable" for a couple of hours. Took pain pills and ate dinner that night. He had an excellent experience. Really really good experience and that was just a couple of months ago.
My professor and cousin (same person) had her's out a long time ago, too and she, too had discomfort and no real pain or anything. I want to say she had a very successful experience.
(The dentist I had was known for being a terrible surgeon so that's there's that).

I had mine done years ago. I was knocked out. It was nice. I wasn't in too much pain and I don't have a high pain tolerance. I was black and blue though. Hope it all goes well.

I hope it all goes well for you. I had a bad experience with mine but that was about 25 years ago and anyone I've known that has had theirs lately has been really good.
My dd had hers out 12 months ago and had a good recovery. The best advice we got (and it may have been here) was to use ice on your face for a few days. We did it 24/7 for about 4 days and gosh it made a difference. She felt it helped with pain relief and it really kept swelling down. She had no bruising at all. They may give you a device to hold the ice on but we found a large gel ice-pack (we had a few on rotation) with a wide crepe bandage wrapped around her head gave the best results. It looked funny but it didn't move.
Good luck!

Good luck! I had mine out a long time ago but I remember being so nervous. My dentist started me on valium the day prior to the surgery and then he put me in a twilight sort of state. Which ment I knew what was going on but was so drugged I didn't care. (I sang to him lol. I am a HORRIBLE singer and never sing when anyone is around)
After it is over follow your post op care. All I recall right now was to not create a vacuum in my mouth by sucking on anything. Pour small amounts of liquids in my mouth with a spoon or cup. No straws! Don't sip from the spoon, pour. Any kind of sucking can pull the "scabs" off the surgical site and leave you with dry socket that hurts like mad.

Good luck. I had mine out last year and it went great- little pain, minimal swelling that was gone the next day. I never needed the painkillers they gave me.
I hope yours goes just as well!

DS just had all four extracted a few months ago. Used ice packs and took prescription-strength Motrin exactly every 6 hours to stay ahead of potential pain. Never needed to take the narcotics he was prescribed. May you have a quick and easy recovery, too!!!

I had mine taken out a couple years ago. Follow your dentists instructions and your recovery will go smoother. I can't remember what pain killer I had but I ended up getting constipated. That was worse than the dental pain. Lol!

Hugs to you. Dental stuff sucks. I had a total of 7 wisdom teeth, because I'm a freak of nature. When I was in my early 20's, I had the top ones (5 in total) removed under novocaine. It was not a pleasant experience. It was so unpleasant, that I couldn't handle getting the bottom 2 taken out. I recently had to have one of them removed. They knocked me out, and it was so much easier! I hope you feel better soon! Keep us posted. I ended up developing a dry socket, despite following dental instructions. I'm in my 40's, and apparently this isn't unusual at my age. If you do develop a dry socket, call your oral surgeon right away.
