from the dealer where I bought it?
The email says "We have had an unexpected rise in pre-owned sales that may make the car you are currently driving worth more now than it has ever been in the last 3 years!" and goes on the offer me a $1,000 trade-in bonus.
A friend of mine mentioned that she has been contacted multiple times about her car, as well (different dealer).
My car is a 13 Malibu. I see them all over. I can't imagine they're in short supply.

I wouldn't exactly call it a scam, but it's definitely a way to get someone back in the dealership to buy a newer car.

I get those often, and my van is a 2004... yeah because 11 year old vans are in high demand. It's a Toyota but still...

It isn't a scam but it is definitely a sales tactic. I was in a car accident in 2012 and ended up with a totaled vehicle. The dealership where I dropped my car off to be stripped for parts calls me at least once a year to talk about my old car. My dad was a car salesman for most of my early childhood, so I know they just want to bring me in to try to sell me something.

I get those letters in the mail for a vehicle I haven't owned in six years. If they want my "in high demand" 2007 Nissan Altima, they'll have to track down the current owner. I nearly totaled it in 2009 and traded it in the day it came out of the repair shop.

We get those all the time for both the 9 year old Honda CRV and the newer Subaru Outback. The dealers just want you back on the showroom floor to sell you up to a new car. If you want one, go. If you don't, ignore it.

Yup, they are trying to entice you to buy. People are holding on to their cars longer so there are less used cars available. I throw them all away.

My parents have gotten these for both their 2012 Honda Odyssey and their 2013 Toyota Camry. They would make money out of the deal. My dad is considering it for his Camry, but only because he wouldn't have a problem having car payments for awhile longer.

Agree with the others who say it's not a scam, but a sales tactic. I've never gotten one myself, but my parents did - and took advantage of it - after Hurricane Sandy. Dealerships both lost a number of vehicles due to the storm and had a high demand for newer used ones. My parents both had Subarus that were a year old, and traded them in for brand new ones, getting GREAT deals.

Just a way to get car owners of a particular brand to think about trading up to a new model. According to my dealer everybody and their cousin has their tongue hanging out wanting *MY* 09 Scion.

I wouldn't call it a scam, it's a marketing ploy to get you to buy a new car. One dealership near us constantly sends us those. We tested it once, but they don't exactly honor the amount listed. It's all a negotiation.

It's more of a sales tactic than a scam. We get a letter once in a while from the dealership we bought our Rav from. We ignore them because we have every intention of driving it until it dies.

I got one of those recently from my dealer. Since I spent a lot on this car planning to drive it till I die, and since it's eight years old now and still feels like my "new" car ... um, NO.

I get them too from the dealership on my 2013 Mazda. I love how they told me they could trade it in and lower my payments. They stopped contacting me when I said it was paid off within a month of me owning it and if they could give me cash back each month for trading it in and getting a newer one and "lowering my current payments" then I'd be there that same day.

I wouldn't exactly call it a scam, but it's definitely a way to get someone back in the dealership to buy a newer car. That is what it is about. I'm not sure the dealer sends them out--it may come from the mfg's data.

Yup- We get those all the time too. My favorite is when they call and say they can get me into a brand new car for the same payment as my 2007. I tell them that we paid cash for the '07, so if they could make my payment zero dollars per month, we have a deal. They don't generally find that too amusing! lol

I get those all the time from my local Toyota dealer. My Corolla is a 2003 with only 64,000 miles on it. And oh yes..it is in demand. And they have a 2015 that would be just perfect for me. So come on down!
