I watched a video last night with my dh and kids about the Internet in the 90s. It really took me back to when my family first got the Internet (good ol' dial-up!) and how thrilled I was when I went to college and had access to the much more reliable (and speedy) Internet they had there. I remember very clearly how monumental that first Internet search felt. It was not a decision to be made lightly, and I wanted to make sure that I didn't waste my time on frivolous topics. It almost felt like I had to use my time on it wisely so that if/when it disappeared, I wouldn't feel like I'd wasted a single precious minute. Yes, I was quite dramatic back then. Still am, actually. Anyway, my first Internet search at college (not counting the dial-up service we had at home) was on one of my favorite bands, The Cure. I spent hours and hours that night camped out in the campus computer lab. I felt like I'd died and gone to heaven! I was amazed by the speed of the Internet, and SO grateful that I didn't have to deal with my sister trying to constantly disconnect me so that she could use the phone to talk to her boyfriend. I read anything and everything I could find on The Cure. And, because I wasn't at home and didn't have to worry about wasting the printer ink (my dad's biggest pet peeve!), I printed out about a trillion and a half pages to boot. I feel kind of bad now that I'm older when I think about how confused the computer lab workers probably were the next morning when they came in to a printer with very little ink and an empty box that once held a huge stack of computer paper. I can just imagine their faces: !! Do you remember what was your first Internet search about?

my first internet search was on how 'do something' in my computer... can't remember what the problem was, but it was my very first 'google'. That was 2001. I found a solution BTW.

When I first read your title I thought, "No way! How on earth could anybody remember that?" But, then, darn if my first internet search didn't pop into my mind! I was in the market for a new car, so I think it was Toyota. Here's why I remember- I opened up Yahoo or Ask Jeeves or something and typed in Toyota or Toyota Corolla or something and I kept getting these obscure links for, like a bunch of technical information. I was getting really frustrated, then it occurred to me, "Maybe I shouldn't bother searching and I should just type in www.toyota.com." It worked! Learned a great lesson in the fact that sometimes the most obvious is really the answer.

I do not remember, but I do remember the days of bulletin boards and 'graphics' that were pictures made from letters. Each BB was a phone number that had to be dialed ... It was all dial up then. I remember when I up graded from 300 baud to 1200... I almost got I'll watching the words appear on my screen so fast... Whole words at a time!

we had the internet before the http://www....I remember being on user groups...around girl scouts. my dh had the internet for the benefit of the company he worked for. we had a modem...dial up..and never ever used AOL, but the private system of the company. he actually has a friend who was one of the early employees for both netscape and google. dh has a degree in computer science..circa 1974. when hiring managers had no idea what the heck that was. and he worked on transaction processing software. so when we got a pc, we both used it a lot and I can't remember what I searched for first on www.

I remember when I first used the internet regularly in high-school/college, there wasn't a "search" feature. You had to know the web address of the page you wanted to see and type it in. I was using the internet in pre-google days.
My dad was an engineer and I was the first kid in my elementary school to have a home computer. Dad used it for work. It was an Apple IIe and it was a giant thing. My dad created a program that would run random math facts for me. He would print it out and I'd have to solve the page of problems, but then I got to play computer games. They were so basic. The entire screen was green, including the "graphics." That would have been around 1981 or 1982.
I can remember having a hand me down computer in my bedroom when I was in middle school and accessing a "bulletin board" and doing online chats with a friend from school. That would have been around 1986-1989??? Not positive, but a guess.
I was really lucky to have a dad that was so into technology and computers. I was usually the "first" of my friends to have any kind of computer or online access.

Wow, you WERE lucky! We didn't have computers in high school, and we didn't even get computers at my work (which happened to be one of the biggest companies in Australia at the time) until probably 1988 or so. I remember there were only 3 computers up on the 4th floor and you had to book a time to go up and use them.
I wish I could remember my first internet search but honestly I have NO idea.

Ecstasy - I had a friend die from a drug overdose in January of 2000, this is one of the drugs she took. Couldn't find shit on it, but many web sites told me how to make it.

I don't remember what the search was but I'm sure I was using Yahoo. I have a very specific memory of the conversation in which I heard the word "google" for the first time and the person who said it. Life changing.

I was in the 9th grade, so it had to be 1994 or 95. My grandma was the first person in my family that had internet. Bone Thugs'N'Harmony was really big at the time. I waited until she went to bed to look them up and found a site with all the lyrics to their raps. I was that ALL THE WORDS were right there available. Some of the raps were so fast you really couldn't figure out what they were saying otherwise and they didn't print lyrics in the album covers. I printed some off to show my best friend, we were so excited.

I don't know if it was the first, but I remember searching for jobs online as early as 1996/97.

It was something to do with pregnancy complications. I had been pg with twins and lost one, and then the dr told me that I had very little amniotic fluid and that the remaining baby was not growing.
I remember finding a messageboard called inciid for people having trouble conceiving.

I have no clue! Come to think of it, my first Internet exposure was less search and more drill through menus. I do remember my first web page with pictures - I had a summer job at NASA and got to work with an early web browser. NASA had a great web page (more than just text) for the time.

Our first internet connection was AOL dial up. I remember AOL had a "keyword" feature. When I first signed on, I had no idea what to do, but the Rosie O'Donnell show advertised "go to keyword:Rosie". In my excitement, it was the only "internet thing" that I could think of, so that's where I went!

I think part of the reason I can remember mine so well was because I felt guilty about using 78,456,987,456,928,743 sheets of printer paper and practically an entire cartridge of ink all in one Internet session. I have to admit that I actually laughed out loud when I read this! We had a computer around that same time period (we didn't have Internet access until the mid-late 90s, though). I remember that first computer very clearly because my dad had told me all these awesome things it could do. When we actually got it home, I was kind of disappointed because it didn't live up to my little kid expectations. If I remember correctly, the only thing I was ever allowed to do on it was type "stories." Of course, I was in kindergarten at the time, so my "stories" were mostly just random words strung together. On top of that, the only name other than mine that I knew how to spell was "Jason", so everything I wrote involved me and some imaginary guy named Jason.

Also back in those days I remember a friend and I typed in Brad Pitt nude and got an illigal operation error messege on the screen. We both screamed what the heck! We thought the police were going to be coming to look for us.

Well, I'm old, so my first internet searches were strictly academic because that's pretty much all there was. The "web" as we know it now wasn't around yet. I don't remember, exactly, but it was probably something related to my organic chemistry class. It would have been in September 1991.

I have no earthly idea what the subject of my first Internet search was. It was over 20 years ago!! I'm sure it was work related, though.

1993. Dh and I had internet access through the University. I discovered message boards. It was so eye opening for my little small town sheltered self. And I haven't been able to tear myself away since.

Mine had to be either recipes or babies. My first internet "homes" were:
The kitchen link. I thought it was so cool because the background looked like Notebook paper. LOL
Babycenter - I'm still close with my other August'98 moms after 16 years, we have a FB group.
A Messies anonymous forum - there were maybe a dozen of us and we were pretty close at the time but the website shut down.

My first "Internet" experience was Prodigy, in 1991 or '92, at my SIL's house. Had it in my house in 1993. But I have absolutely no idea what my first Internet search was!

I have no idea. I know that I was working with Internet access by the early 90s and distinctly remember AOL and its freaky keywords. But other than that . . . I got nada. I do remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever when I had a second phone line installed in my home office in '96 so that I could dialup any time I wanted.

No idea! LOL it was 1995 and we were one of the first of our friends to get the internet. We had a local provider, no AOL for us.
