I came across a Canon PowerShot S3 IS at a yard sale this weekend marked for $25. I wasn't looking for a point and shoot camera; hadn't thought about getting one at all. I actually made other purchases then got back in the van. Then I started to think that as much as I love my DSLR cameras, there are times when I don't want to take them someplace, either because they will be too bulky/heavy, or I don't want to risk them getting ruined. I thought it might be nice to have a light, cheap camera again that I didn't have to worry about. So I hopped back out to take another look. It came with a Canon tele-converter and Canon adapter, which were not inexpensive add ons when originally purchased. With the tele-converter it would give more reach than the longest of my DSLR lenses. And it offered different shooting modes including manual control. It had the box and all of the manuals. So I offered $20 and it was accepted. I took some test shots in my garden on the weekend, and then yesterday took it to the dirt bike track when we went to watch the races. It will never replace my DSLRs, and it has its limitations, but I think there will be times when it will make a handy stand in. I had forgotten how bad shutter was with a P&S! It made it very difficult to get action shots when the bikes were zipping by. I ended up with a few decent enough photos though. Including some that I wouldn't have been able to get with a DSLR because I just wouldn't have had the reach. All in all, I think it was worth the $20. And I think it will be ideal for something like the zoo, or the fall fair, where I don't take a lot of action shots, don't need to be that creative with dof, and might like a bit more reach. Thanks for looking.

Awesome pics - a point and shoot can do a lot in the hands of a professional! TFS

Love those kind of finds. I keep a point and shoot in my purse. Great for those times when you wish you had a camera and now you do! Dh keeps one in his messenger bag he takes for work. He is a courier for a same day delivery company in and around San Francisco and he has come home with some great spur of the moment photos.

Thanks purplebee. I'm not a professional, but an ardent hobbyist who enjoys photography. I do find the p&s makes me think about photography in a different way then the DSLR does.
Leeny, I imagine that there would be a lot of opportunities for some great shots in San Francisco! I would imagine he has developed a good eye for what makes a good photograph.

I had that camera back in the day and LOVED it. It was easy and simple to use, with a fantastic zoom. It also took THE BEST video!
