Is there such a thing? We went to buy some for dd for college, and all the cute patterned ones at target are not dishwasher or microwavable? like WTH would you even want them for then? I think we had this same problem with older dd. We had bought some plastic dishes, not even thinking they wouldn't work, and when we got home read the label. She still uses them in the microwave. They haven't melted yet. woops.

I don't think they'll melt necessarily, but rather get extremely hot... Like you can get burned hot.

I think with plastic, it's not just that they could melt or get hot but that components of the plastic could leach into the food. I'd skip the plastic and just have a few sturdy dishes for use in the microwave -I still use the corning ware I had in college more than 20 yrs ago

Eeek! If you want them to be used in the microwave, please buy glass or stoneware. Plastic can melt and leach into the food. There are plenty of microwave safe inexpensive stoneware plates and bowls out there, great for dorms.

Why do they have to be plastic? It doesn't have to be corningware... why not just buy some regular dishes? They come in singles.

I bought some cheap regular dishes at Ikea for my young kids. I think it was $20 for a 4-6 place settings. You can also buy the pieces individually. I could careless if they accidentally break or chip them. I avoid heating up plastic. We have switched over to a glass Tupperware-type system for leftovers.

Kathy! you need to find me some cute corning ware!! The dangers of heating food in plastic has been all over the news for years now. We've switched to glass Pyrex and glass Rubbermaid food storage and only use plastic for lunch boxes.

I love our corelle dishes even though they are ugly (and after 20 yrs I'm sick of the pattern but they're still in perfect condition). They have plain white ones.

You don't microwave plastic.
How can someone not know that in this day and age?

I don't use the Target melamine plates in the microwave but they ARE dishwasher safe. I've never had a problem with them melting, losing their pattern or anything else. I change sets frequently. I bore easily I guess. I have my Fiesta ware for the microwave, but they are so stinking heavy that for just a sandwich or salad I use the lightweight colourful stuff.

I'm another one that wouldn't buy plastic for the microwave. Since she will be washing in a small dorm sink I'd skip dinner sized plates because they will be hard to wash in a small sink. Get salad sized ones from some place that sells open stock dishware. I use that size in my microwave all the time. Perfect size imo.

Pfalzgraff Patterns - maybe you guys could find something you like here. Most Pfalzgraff is microwave safe, they just have a few melamine pieces, etc., that aren't. You can easily just buy her some salad plates and bowls for the microwave in a pattern she likes. Some are square even! Again, please don't put plastic in the microwave!

I never use plastic of any kind in the microwave. Waxed paper on top of a plate or bowl to prevent splatters (no paper towels - same chemical issue). I love using large Pyrex measuring cups to heat almost anything in the microwave. Easy to remove due to the handle. Then you can transfer to a plate, preferably not a plastic one. I don't know if they still make Corelle... it's pretty sturdy, thin so it stacks well, etc.

I agree with the Corelle. Sturdy and lots of different patterns and colors. WalMart has quite a selection and pieces are sold individually.

I'm mainly talking about the Target melamine plates, that aren't microwavable. Which I was surprised about! It just seems so solid. KWIM?
