Hi - I would love to share about the experience from my side. He didn't realize really what was happening. The advise nurse (Kaiser, I love them) talked to a doc on call and said he needed to get the the ER asap. He resisted a bit and wanted to drive. well, no, he couldn't drive. thank G-d there were two angels nearby to drive us to the ER that is in Oakland CA. about 1/2 hr away. In retrospect I should have just called 911 because I didn't know if it was a big stroke or a TIA. He was confused and could hardly get any words out. He's normally a brilliant man who plays scrabble and bridge all the time and wins! Prayers and good thoughts welcome. |

Oh, he was admitted while they did tests and monitored his heart. he was released yesterday afternoon. I am grateful for our daughters help, and for the support of our SIL. he has many friends who are offering help and love. I probably need support here. thanks in advance

Wow! How frightening for you! I am so glad that you were able to get him to the hospital and that things seem to be looking up at this point. I hope everything continues to progress well.

Hugs, Lindy. I've been there with my own DH and it is terrifying indeed. Please encourage him to follow all dr.'s orders. My DH's was a full on stroke with five days in ICU while they struggled to control his blood pressure. That was 8 years ago and he has long since made a full recovery. Prayers for both of you. Prepare to be patient as he wraps his mind around this.

My DH had what I suspected was a TIA 12 days ago. Here's what I wrote about his "episode". (for you to compare)
DH had some sort of "episode" while driving home from work. Immediately, I thought it was a TIA.
When he arrived home, I insisted that we go to the E.R. He agreed.
Doctor and nurses all agree that it was most likely a TIA based on the detailed narrative we gave of the episode but because none of the testing pointed directly to it being a TIA, they released him, and didn't even reference a TIA. (his discharge paperwork called it a headache made reference to altered mental status not related to alcohol)
ER doctor felt fine sending him home, because he had someone "responsible" at home. I almost LOL'd.
He'll follow up with the neurologist within a few days.
We may never have answers as to what happened or why, but we're fairly confident through blood work, a few xrays and a CT scan that there's no impending doom. Hopefully the insurance company doesn't think he went to the ER with a headache.

My DH's happened on a Thursday...he stayed home from work on Friday and saw his regular doctor on Monday. They reviewed his blood work from the blood they took at the ER. Bloodwork indicated a high WBC (while it may be high, it wasn't high enough to warrant the hospital doing any further investigation) and either high or low (DH doesn't remember what the doctor said) potassium.
His regular doctor did some additional bloodwork. DH called the neurologist he was referred to the day after his "episode", but didn't tell them at the beginning of the call he had just been in the ER. They made his "new patient appointment" for the end of the month. At the end of the call, DH told the receptionist about his visit to the ER and she said if he has any additional symptoms or episodes, to call them right away and they'll work him in sooner. Fortunately there's been nothing and his scheduled visit with the neurologist is still more than a week away.
It was scary, for sure.

good for you for insisting that he go!! Thinking positive thoughts for a full recovery for your DH!
(I had one a number of years ago when I was 39, and I thought I was only stressed out and feeling sick. We didn't know what had actually happened till a few days later when I called my Dr. and she ordered a CT scan... thankfully mine was a small blockage and my symptoms subsided after a few minutes, otherwise it could have been really bad for me.)
Always err on the side of caution is what I think NOW.

As my DH was getting onto the highway after work, he said that he wasn't feeling right. He called me on the phone, thinking to himself "if I talk to Jenny...I'll be able to snap out of whatever this is". When I answered the phone, he told me that he was having some kind of problem. I tried to get information from him...I even fed him symptoms to see if he could just hear one and say "yes" or anything. All I got was "uhhhhhh" He had no other words. I asked him where he was and he was not able to tell me.
The scariest part was...he was actually DRIVING. I kept telling him to pull off to the side of the road. It was like he could not comprehend what I was saying. While on the phone, I heard a car horn...LOUD and very long. He told me later that he did not know how he got into the inside lane. I told him that I'd bet that the car that laid on the horn knows how he got there. Even after it was over and he started talking normally, I still pleaded with him to pull off to the side of the road and just chill.
I was terrified because while this was happening...there was absolutely nothing I could do. I wasn't there, and it wasn't even like I could call 911 and get him help. They'd ask where he was and all I could offer them was GA400. I had no idea where on 400 he was.
So so scary.
I hope you get some answers and this kind of thing never ever happens to your DH again.

@gajenny, that is awful!! How lucky for your DH that he got to the side of the road safely! Keep asking questions once he goes to the doctor, to make sure they're doing all the tests they can to rule out a cause... they did a ton of tests on me trying to figure out the cause of mine. They finally concluded it *must* have been a plaque of cholesterol (I have borderline high cholesterol) that came loose and migrated to my brain, because everything else checked out okay. But they never figured out for sure; apparently a good percentage of them never have a definable cause. lindywholoveskids, your DH's doctors must figure he's doing good for them to release him from the hospital! ETA: my symptoms were pretty much the same-- my left arm suddenly turned into a piece of wood, I couldn't use my hand, and my speech was sort of slurred, although my BF says he could understand me mostly. And I felt really tired and sort of nauseous. The kicker, though, is that those are classic symptoms, but because of my age (in my 30s), the idea of having a stroke never even entered my mind. |

How positively terrifying. I'm glad that it was a TIA and not a full stroke and hopefully he and his docs will take steps to address any underlying issues so it doesn't happen again.

Very scary, for you and for him. I hope he makes a full recovery. I've been through something similar with my BIL. When he had his last stroke (only in his mid-50s and he's had three, poor guy, but this was by far the worst) my sister was out of town and his kids called me in a panic. I happened to be parked right in front of their house when they called because my grandson goes to daycare across the street from them. He refused to let us call 911, because of course he didn't really understand what was going on, and he is over 6'4" and very strong and normally very healthy. So we talked him into my car and I drove him to the ER myself. It scared me, but it turned out to be fine because he didn't have the kind of stroke that has to be treated right away. In fact, they decided he'd probably had the stroke the night before. That was two years ago and he is still recovering but doing very well. He's returned to work part-time and he's trying to get his drivers license back, against my sister's wishes.  |

Thanks All- so many people can relate.
LucyG- what kind of stroke was it for your BIL? I have been reading the stroke booklet and online. there are many kinds of strokes, and I think that even with a TIA blood thinners are required and eventually blood pressure meds.
UPDATE- my husband said this afternoon that he wasn't feeling as sharp as normal. but, he tried to do a hike and see friends. Plus he was driving. Last night, he slept 12 hours! I think for him that it has taken longer to have the symptoms pass than they describe. it isn't temporary for him. And yes, I am trying to get him to take care of himself. when he said that about not feeling as sharp as usual, our daughter and I insisted he call the advice nurse. he has a phone apt with his regular dr tomorrow morning.

TIA's are considered strokes, just that they pass without lasting effects on the brain. so they are also called 'mini strokes'
