Thanks All- so many people can relate. LucyG- what kind of stroke was it for your BIL? I have been reading the stroke booklet and online. there are many kinds of strokes, and I think that even with a TIA blood thinners are required and eventually blood pressure meds. I forget the name of his condition, but he has some kind of blood vessel malformation in his brain. Periodically it bursts and that causes a stroke. The first one they didn't even realize he had until later on, after the second one and they saw previous damage, and then my sister knew exactly when it had happened. They just didn't realize at the time that it was a stroke. The second time, he was hospitalized but he was fine again within 24 hours and prowling the halls. This third one, I guess it wasn't going to kill him since it was 12 hours old before anyone realized there was a problem, but it caused some cognitive and physical damage. They were worried that a fourth one might actually kill him, so he went to Stanford for surgery to try to fix the venous-whatever thing that was causing the problems. A lot of his remaining physical issues are from the surgery, not the stroke itself. And there's no real guarantee of a fix, either. So we appreciate him while he's here and hope for the best. ETA so I think it's the bleeding kind, not the blockage kind? I am not a stroke expert! I could find out, though.

One other thing to mention...perhaps you already know the answer and have told the doctors or perhaps no one has questioned this and it's information you need to gather.
My DH is 51. Certainly seems young for a stroke of any kind (although 30's seems quite young obviously too) His father had a blackout episode while he was driving almost 30 yrs ago. (he was 50 at the time) He passed out, crashed the car and they never found a cause. He never drove again.
So for the OP...in case you've not looked into family history, it's probably a good time to start asking questions so that the doctors have as much information as possible.

My stepdad had something similar, but like GAJenny's husband, it was not officially diagnosed due to no diagnostic "proof". He was told to be on the watch for signs of stroke. I remember my mom telling me that there is a number of people who will go on to have a full stroke in the next five days and then there is a higher risk in the time after that. I don't think he was given any medication, which I thought was odd.
I hope your husband is feeling better soon and stays healthy!

thanks again- he's seeming to be fine today, and took a 6 mile hike this morning (which he did maybe 3 times a week before the TIA) still not feeling as 'sharp" and talked to the Dr this morning. he has an apt Friday. he seems a bit tired to me, and it totally makes sense, given what he want through. He is worried and was scared. I am not so scared any more.

While transient ischemic attack (TIA) is often labeled “mini-stroke,” it is more accurately characterized as a “warning stroke,” a warning you should take very seriously.
TIA is caused by a clot; the only difference between a stroke and TIA is that with TIA the blockage is transient (temporary). TIA symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Most TIAs last less than five minutes; the average is about a minute. When a TIA is over, it usually causes no permanent injury to the brain.

my husbands TIA had speech symptoms lasting for a few hours. What we read and were told by the docs was this was normal.
We know that this can be a warning stroke and that if he doesn't take care of himself he can have a big stroke.
thanks. all is well tonight. I am starting to feel better and since I can be an anxious person, I am doing quite well.
G'night from NCAL!

Update on DH+ my husband still has some memory problems but he is doing quite well. he decided to do lots of excercise and that makes him feel great. I di remind him of things some days. He has learned that if he doesn't take care of something right away, he may not remember to do it. all tests were clear. they never found a clot or even a small tiny one. So what ever caused it, came and went pretty rapidly.

I try to write down things I need to do so that I remember them, and, as far as I know I don't have any memory impairment, per se.

I'm glad he is continue to recover.
My little PSA - always call 911 -not only is it what they are there for, but you never know what may happen in the car on the way to the hospital. Even if your "patient" isn't driving, what can you do if something happens? By calling 911 you get trained professionals who do this all the time. The paramedics will be able to administer appropriate medications, and for something like a stroke, may be able to reverse the problem very quickly.

My DH had a stroke in Feb 2015. He works up feeling a bit 'weird.' His diabetic neurothrapy (sp?) had moved from the left side of his body to the right side, and the right side of his mouth was a bit droopier than it had been earlier. We were used to it being somewhat droopy, though, because he had had an episode of Bell's Palsy in 2014. Anyway, he got ready, went to work, came home, went to bed. The next morning, the areas that had felt weird the day before hurt, so we went to the ER. They did some fast bloodwork and then a CT scan. The scan alarmed them enough that they sent him to one of Kaiser's centers for an immediate MRI, which showed he'd definitely had a stroke.
Neither the drs nor I had any trouble understanding why DH had had a stroke - the 15 years of uncontrolled diabetes plus the more recent uncontrolled blood pressure were reasons enough. DH had thought he was being so smart, telling the drs thru the years how he was handling his bs and bp, but he got a big wakeup call that day. This may sound strange, but it really was a blessing in disguise.
Since the stroke DH has not only gotten his bp and bs under control, he's actually been taken off the stronger of the two diabetes meds. His kidneys are not in good shape, but they have improved substantially. He was on the verge of losing his sight, but after 18 months of almost monthly eye injections, the problem is resolving. His weight has dropped, too.
Before the stroke DH wouldn't let me have any part in helping him with his diabetes. I wasn't welcome at the dr, I didn't know what drugs he was on, nothing. Since the stroke, my being involved has not been an issue; it's been a necessity. Any time DH has tried to take over his meds, he's screwed it up royally, to the point his kidney function dropped tremendously. He doesn't seem to be able to get a handle on the meds. Now I set them up each week with him while we joke and visit, and he sends me a text each time he takes something or eats away from home.
DH also sends our family message group a picture each morning of his bp and bs monitors. I love this! Now both kids can see for themselves how he is doing with monitoring himself. Since the time and date show clearly on the screen of each, I don't have to worry that Mr. Smarter-than-the dr is pulling a fast one. My mom is also on the loop and she, like our kids, makes a point of commenting on his results each morning. Since she has high bp, too, she tells us hers via text at the same time and the two of them cheer each other on.
I'm so glad your DH has improved, too, OP. I understand about the fear, too. I had never had a panic attack or had anxiety until we started finding out how bad DH's health was. Once they started, I had them several times a week until recently. I still have one occasionally when DH does something that makes me think he might not be doing too well.
