My dd (15) has just started practice for cheerleading for next school year. The coach is requiring the girls have ankle weights for practice. I would assume for the conditioning part of practice and/or jumps. I am a little uncomfortable about this as she has a previous knee injury that we are working on strengthening this summer but I don't want it to seem like she is unwilling.
I have a call in to her doc but thought there might be some thought provoking opinions on the subject. Is it worth addressing with the coach or just wait and see?

I know that they are used in cheer, but had always heard that they aren't good for your joints. I'm curious to hear what your daughter's orthopedist thinks.

You can also consult the athletic trainer at your school. Ours is wonderful and will have no problem going to the coach and advocating for the kids. Sometimes that works when you don't want it known that your kid is the one in question.

They need to be doing real strength training, ankle weights are a joke.

It really depends on how they are going to be used. For certain types of exercises, they are fine. For just wearing at practices and while jumping, not so fine.
On a related note, this brings up an issue going on in my state at the moment. They are trying to legislate appropriate safety training for cheer coaches throughout the state. Reading something like this just brings that issue back up to me.

The cheer coach mandating ankle weights is going to cause girls to be injured. Jumping with ankle weights is a giant no-no. I like the suggestion basket1lady made, to get the school's athletic trainer involved.

I cheered all through school (had a college scholarship) and spent several years as a varsity coach. No way...NEVER would I have the girls use ankle weights. Basic lunges and squats can build muscle strength to increase jumps. Running can increase endurance for routines.
I usually stay out of stuff like this, but I would raise concern over this. Ligament injuries are no joke

At my kids school, the athletes all seem to do weight training, don't know of any teams that use ankle weights. My daughter is on the track team and they swim, lift as well as running/jumping, etc.
