I'm not quite sure what I might've done but today i'm so stiff I can't stand myself. Somethings gotta give.
I have back pain pretty frequently but it's always lower back. From about 6 inches below where my bra sits up to my neck it feels like every muscle is knotted and throbbing. I woke up this morning super stiff, tried to walk to the bathroom and couldn't stand up. He had to help me out of bed and I decided to lay down for a minute to try to stretch a little and it just got worse.
I'm laying on pillows, i've tried a hot bath and just ended up crying the entire time I was in there, i've tried ice packs and heating pads. Even breathing makes those muscles quiver.
I don't think i've done anything crazy that would cause it. I helped dh lay flooring a few nights ago but I was fine afterwards. The same night I cleaned out some cabinets but nothing out of the norm. Yesterday we walked the dogs, planted some seeds (in containers, no bending/lifting) and went to a produce auction but again no lifting anything heavier than a flat of tomato plants.
I was fine when I went to bed last night, fine when i got up in the middle of the night and then it's like I was attacked by tiny ninjas in my sleep.
Any suggestions? I have a standing rx for pain relief and muscle relaxers so I most likely won't pay for a doctors visit for them to tell me that my muscles are tight and to rest. I took a muscle relaxer about an hour ago with some aleve and it's helping some but not enough to sit up by myself quite yet.
I will most likely schedule a massage and go get adjusted at a chiro but i'm not sure what to do first/when. Honestly the thought of either right now kind of terrifies me.
Holy Moly, I don't think i've ever said I would prefer to not get a massage. DH should mark this one in his record book. ha

I had similar back pain. I just finished 4 weeks of PT to help. The PT exercises really helped. For the first time in probably 3 years, I can get up with no pain. I had a series of exercises. I'll see if I can describe them.
These 3 require a piece of rubber tubing--tie a knot in it so it will stay in the doorway. Close the door and have the tubing hanging out of the door about 6 inches above the door knob. #1. Grasp the tubing in both hands. With elbows stiff, pull the bands back, so that it is like swinging your arms behind you. You should "sort of" feel it around your shoulder blades. Do this 20 times. #2. sit in chair. (about 4 ft back) Pull the tubing back to your waist (elbows will bend)--both arms at the same time. Again, you should feel the shoulder blades strengthen. Do this 20 times #3. sit in chair. Pull one arm back, bending elbow...arm is up, so that your hand is at shoulder level when you finish. When you do so, turn your head/body so that your face follows your hand back. 15 times
The next one requires a belt or length of fabric about like a dog leash. #4. Lie on floor on your back. Bend knees. Put strap behind right thigh, near knee. Put left foot on top of right knee. Now pull back on the strap so that your right foot comes off the floor. Hold for a count of 15. Do this 3 times. Now reverse so that your left leg is pulled up and right foot is on top of left knee.
#5 - They called this "raise the roof." It was difficult at first, but as my back got better, it really helps. Put your back against the wall (or closet door). Bend knees and slide down so that you are "sitting on the wall." Put your arms in the position of "hands up." Now, press the small of your back to the wall as you raise your arms above your head--Keep your arms touching the wall. Raise arms/lower 15 times.
#6. Lie on back on floor. Bend knees. Now gently, slowly move the bent knees from side to side. It makes your pelvis rock side to side. do this 20 times.
Hope you get some relief.

I'm so sorry. I know what it's like to have back pain like that. Just relax and take it easy.
Since this is new pain, I'd want an x ray before getting a chiropractic adjustment--just to ensure that you didn't crack a vertebrae or slip a disc.
I cracked a vertebrae when I fell down my stairs in January. The muscles around the area completely spasmed down. I couldn't even breathe without pain. It took a few weeks for the area to stop hurting.
Weather changes also affect how my muscles and joints hurt and spasm. We're having a lot of thunderstorms today, and my back is really bothering me.
I do rest, but I don't do a lot of heat because it doesn't really help me.
I am glad that you have some medications to help.

I'm not so sure I'd get a massage. I, too, have back issues, mostly lower back. I used my daughter's back massager. It was one that you put in a chair and it massages your back. It was wonderful when I was on it. As soon as I got off my back went into spasms. That was worse than childbirth. I had to go to the hospital and was out of work for a week. They put me on steroids for 2 weeks. On the last day of round 1 my back went into spasms again. After another 2 weeks of steroids my back was much better.
I hope you get some relief soon.

Massage and go swimming.
My husband lays on his stomach , on the bed with his knees over the edge. His lifts one leg gently, then the other.

Let's see if I can explain this... It is my favorite move.
Find a door frame or wall that is the distance between your elbows when outstretched. Make like a "touchdown" or "Field goal" shape. Try to keep your arms level. Push out with your forearms and elbows. Hold it for about 30 seconds. I was taught this by a PT during a particularly challenging time.

Something similar happened to me when I was in my early 30s. I was under lots of stress at work, woke up one morning and could not stand upright; was literally walking around whimpering in a 90 degree angle posture. Saw my pcp who told me about MacKenzie exercises. Basically, it's similar to the cobra yoga pose. Did it every hour on the hour for several days, saw my chiropractor who was not the bone-cracking type of chiropractor.
However, as someone who's just learned in the past couple of months that I have a pretty profoundly messed up back, and after suffering back pain off and on for years, I would encourage you to find a good orthopedic doctor who's not scalpel-happy and get some x-rays/MRI to see what's going on in there.

My best tip is to make an appointment with an orthopedic dr and have your back checked out.
Back pain blows. I hope yours goes away soon!

Have you ever researched the benefits of using a foam roller? It could really benefit you.

You might need bi-weekly apts with a chiro for a couple months to sort it out.

I was rear ended last week and I immediately called my acupuncturist. Had a treatment yesterday and will go twice weekly for a month for my back and neck. Acupuncture does wonders for injuries and asthma, imho. You might want to consider it. Of course, I always add my disclaimer about it being best to see an orthopedic doc. Wishing you relief, quickly.

Try an anti inflammatory and ice. I know the heat and muscle relaxers feel good but they are temporary and tend to hide the underlying issue.
hope you feel better.

I would either see my regular Dr or an orthopedist before chiro, massage, etc... If you somehow slipped a disc or have some other physical issue, it could be a bulge or even rupture that's pressing the nerves of your spinal cord. Until I was sure that wasn't the case, there is no way I would let someone blindly crack and "adjust" my spine. I've had 2 back surgeries already. I know that there are amazing and easy ways to treat simple injuries when treated timely. Never hurts to have a well qualified orthopedic Dr look at any back issues. Might save you years of agony!

I agree. Back pain is the worst, and perhaps by seeing a doctor you can fix what this is and work on it never coming back again. I have lower back issues, and both my doctor and physical therapist say to use ice for the first three days, then heat or ice after that, whichever feels better. I hope you feel better soon!

So feeling your pain! I often get an intense burning pain in the same spot. I have to lie down flat on a carpeted floor for about 10-15 mins and use that time to try and completely relax my body from head to toe. I also have a chiropractor I completely trust and I see her once every few months. After reading this thread I'm looking into yoga!

I have been having the same type of pain/ache/tightness for several weeks! I keep trying to stretch and ice it.

I normally would advocate for a chiro or some of the stretches above (or both) but since you normally only have low back pain and this is high - and because it's debilitating - that's not normal for you. I recommend a doctor visit first.
