DH and I are going on an Alaskan cruise tour next month, we are excited! Just us, our boys will be with my parents I saw on cruise critic that there are ports that either tender or dock, that this information is sent to cruisers. How do I know which it will be at my ports? I looked at my documents....didn't see anything. Not working with a TA, booked thru the cruise line.

Take binoculars for each person in your party. There simply is no time to "find an animal", then trade the binocs and help the new viewer try to "find the animal" again! Take layers of clothes -- our first trip wasn't all that cold (except in Glacier Bay); 2nd trip started very warm, then turned cold and stayed cold!

We docked at all of ours but were on a smaller Holland America line boat. Some of the very large Princess boats tendered in Juneau, but that was the only one I saw tenders on the days we were there.
Have so much fun! It is an amazing adventure!
I highly recommend the Whale Watch dinner cruise out of Skagway. And the boat ride/canoe/glacier/trek out of Juneau. It was a long trip, but very very worth it if you are stopping in those ports.
I felt like shopping was best in Ketchikan though Juneau had a bit more shops.
Beware all the jewelry stores are owned by the cruise lines and they MAJORLY push the jewelry sales!

I am a cheap cruiser. I prefer the cheapest, darkest, Titanic level interior room. But, if it is in your budget to get a balcony, DO IT. Alaska with the glaciers is well worth the upgrade expense. Stacy

I've cruised Alaska twice. Both times only tendered in Juneau. I see that you mentioned cruise tour. Is it with Princess? And are you taking the train to Denali? If so, it's an all day train ride. But Denali is so cool and worth it. And the Princess resort is pretty nice. We did a tour hike at Denali State Park and went on our own in Denali NP.
Alaska cruises are less formal than other cruises I've been on. Most everyone wears casual clothing and/or hiking pants, jeans and boots. We did dress for formal nights, though.
Be prepared to take 100's of photos of bald eagles and waterfalls and bears.

I LOVE Denali! We've done a white water rafting tour when there -- an easy one when DS was 12-ish, then my sister and I did a faster water tour the 2nd time. And take the LONG tour into the Park -- again, the first time was on an old fashioned Blue Bird bus (that had its charms), the 2nd time was on a much nicer motor coach with TV monitors for the driver to focus on animals. Taking binocs for EACH person is critical in Denali -- if you want to see animals! And remember -- Denali is huge and it isn't a zoo -- the animals are going to be WAY FAR away (usually) from the bus.
If you don't know -- the train stuff isn't price included. There will probably be a dining car -- decent food, a bit expensive; and smoothies, coffee and alcoholic drinks are sold "upstairs" in the viewing area. You can pay by cash or credit card toward the end of the ride. The train, if it is the same, is "hosted" by really nice employees who are usually residents of Alaska ... or very well informed -- it can be a fun ride but be sure to visit the open area car or the end of each car for some outdoor time!
Alaska is fabulous! The "midnight sun" will probably make you a big "dingy" -- it just feels so odd!
