...does it hurt?
I have to have one due to a "dark spot" on my latest mammogram, plus ultrasound, done on my right breast. The radiologist says it could be nothing but scar tissue from an earlier mastitis, but the only way to be certain is to have a needle biopsy.
I hate needles with a passion, and I'm already nervous about what all this could mean, please tell me I have nothing to fear

Not at all. They also used a topical numbing med on me.

It's a really really thin needle

Thank you...I had visions of this straw-sized needle sucking out gobs of breast tissue. I think I can deal if it's a tiny needle, there's no pain and I don't look while it's being done.

It's not bad at all.

The numbing shot hurt more than the actually biopsy needle, and that was just a sting. I don't even have a scar from mine, and I scar easily.
What did me in was the adhesive from the tape to secure the 2x2 gauze pad. I was allergic to it and it it left a big area where the top layer of my skin tore off. That hurt for a good month! So if you are allergic to that sort of thing, watch for that.
The nurse gave me a frozen packet of gauze pads to put over the site. I made another at home and alternated putting those over the site. It worked well to keep the swelling down.

It didn't hurt me. What did cause discomfort for about a year after was the titanium marker they placed after the biopsy. If they had mentioned it prior to the procedure I would have done some research on it and probably declined. Unfortunately I knew nothing about it until they told me they were putting it in. You may want to do some googling about it and decide for yourself what you'd like to do.

It wasn't painful but I had some slight discomfort at the site afterwards but they gave me ice packs to wear in my bra. Definitely not bad. The worst part was probably just the position that you have to be in, but again, more uncomfortable than painful.
I also had some issues with the site of the titanium. I think I might have had a slight allergy to it and I had a ton of itching for about 8 months, but suddenly it went away and nothing since then.
If I had to have another one, I definitely wouldn't be as worried or anxious as the first time. It wasn't bad at all.

I had one a long time ago. My husband came with to hold my hand. It hurt him more than it hurt me.

I've had two, one was a needle aspiration with a very small needle (really just had a cyst drained and the fluid sent off for pathology) and the other was a needle core biopsy where they need to take a larger sample and possibly put a metal marker in, to mark that spot so it can be found easily again if necessary. The metal goes in after they get the sample, all through the same needle, it's a larger needle but not scary. Both times they numbed it, didn't hurt a bit. I did have very mild tenderness on the breast after the core biopsy for a day or two afterward, no big deal, and some itching as the site healed. I promise you can handle it and you'll be fine

You will have more pain later than during. Anxiety is the worst. Pain also has to do with the location (how much tissue they go through). Really - stressing over it is worse than the procedure itself.

I've had it done twice and had no pain during or after.
The worst part was the anxiety of waiting for pathology report for the all clear.
Hope you report back to us soon that all is well. Until then, will say a little prayer for you.

Thank you so much ladies for sharing your experiences, the titanium warning (!), your reassurances. I think I can put my brave face on and deal with the needle anxiety. I'm so sorry you all had to go through the procedure in the first place, I hope everything turned out for the best.

No one mentioned it so I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere, but before my needle biopsy was complete, they did a mammogram (very light pressure) to make sure that the titanium was in place (or something like that, I can't remember). Now that I think about it, I must not have been that numb because I was super worried that that part would hurt a lot more than usual. It didn't - they were very gentle with it.
