If you are Heather Smith, and she is Mary Jones, I love the idea of kids being Jane Smith Jones and Mike Smith Jones. (Or Jones Smith, whichever sounds better!) And then you're the Smith Jones family, and life is good. I think that probably works best in the south anyway, where women often keep their maiden names as middle names.
As if life isn't complicated enough! Or just choose completely new names...whatever you wanted to be called as a kid, you can go with it now! "Hi, I'm Rainbow Pony Snuffleupagus, and this is my partner Birthday Cake Kitten Snuffleupagus."
Maybe not.

That's funny Jennifer. I don't think I we will be changing our names to those though.

I consider my husband's last name "the family name", especially since that's our son's name too. Also, I don't mind when people call me "Mrs. <husband's name>", even though I kept my maiden name. This is how we handle it, though I don't usually answer right away when called Mrs. <husband's name> since even after 20 yrs, it still seems odd. I'm not my mother in law! (Of course, I also don't answer to Mrs. <my last name> because I think people are asking for my mom).
For kids names, we gave our kids my last name as a middle name, a common practice in my extended family over several generations. I have friends who gave their kids a hyphenated last name or a last name that was a combination of the two surnames. I went to school with a girl with the last name Coopersmith that was a combination of her parent's last names. I don't do family monograms, but each of us has had individually monogrammed items, and that works! I can still use my monogrammed stuff from HS when monogramming was popular -too bad the clothes don't fit!)
