Do you have any tips or is there anything I should know beforehand?
Also, is there much else to do in the surrounding area?

We went two years ago when my lego fanatic was seven and older DS was 14. I understand they've expanded since we were there, but it was an easy half day for us. I really think it's too expensive for what they actually offer, but I'd recommend it if you have a lego obsessed kid. It was very clean and there were no lines. Not the best food choices. My 14 yo was bored out of his mind but tried to make it fun for younger DS. I did like that YDS was able to ride the roller coaster there to "get his feet wet" before attempting something larger at another park.

It's summer time and the water park should be open. It is pretty hot these days, and while it isn't a huge water park, we can easily spend a good half day while there.
They JUST opened the new hotel (I think last week) which is supposed to be pretty cool.
I think there is a ton to do in the area, but it depends on what you like to do. If you would enjoy a day outside walking through amazing gardens, take the time to run over to Bok Tower Gardens. You eat lunch there, the food is really good. The history of Bok Tower is really cool.
You are also only about an hour away from Disney et. al. if that is your thing.

We went for 2 days this past March and loved having the extra day, we were able to just relax and fit in almost everything! We didn't do the waterpark, as it wasn't open when we went. We also didn't get to see any of the movies or the shows (one happened not to be opened when we planned to go) If your kids are interested in the Lego Mindstorm at the Imagination Zone, go straight there in the morning because the "classes" fill up fast, my 12 year old loved it! And another thing he was interested in was hunting down the Minifigure Ambassador! You can trade minifigures throughout the park, but the Ambassador had a full vest of cool ones. While my sister took her 10 year old and my oldest to Mindstorm, my 3 year old and I hung out in the AC building with duplo blocks...they also have in the same room where you can build your own car and test it on their tracks they had, which all three enjoyed. We all loved Miniland and enjoyed all the LEGO builds everywhere! My 10 year old nephew is the "rider" and he enjoyed all of them! The food there is pricey, but what amusement park isn't, we didn't have anything bad and it was filling. The only thing we were disappointed in (mostly my 12 year old) is that they didn't have a huge selection of pick-a-brick, the one in Downtown Disney is much much larger, but they did enjoy building minifigures (you got to build three with hair/hat and accessory for $9.99). There wasn't a whole lot of lego product that we couldn't find elsewhere, except for the build a minifigure. And we didn't do anything else in the area, except to grab dinner the first night and head to our hotel. Also do remember it's Florida, so it's hot and it rains in the afternoon
