In a fit of anxiety I ripped up the cuticle on my thumb on Thursday. Yesterday morning it was sore. Last night it has a little swelling around the cuticle and the pad of the thumb was sore. As the evening wore on it felt slightly warm off and on.
About 2 hours ago it woke me up due to throbbing and the armpit on that arm is sore. A dull ache. The cuticle is now pretty swollen and somewhat hard to bend.
It is a holiday weekend, so no doctor appointments until Tuesday.
Should I be worried? Head to the walk-in pharmacy clinic in the morning?

Yep. Sounds like it is infected. I would not wait until Tuesday.

Yeah, infection probably. I would see what the pharmacy can give you. And let that be a lesson to you - leave your cuticles alone *said in my best Mummy voice*

DH had a picked to death infected cuticle (started with a hangnail), that his GP looked at during an annual exam. DH had to clean it 4x a day, with a soft tooth brush, and peroxide, (he said it hurt like a bitch) then cover it with Neosporin and a band aid. Dr told him to call if it wasn't better in 3 days. It was. Best wishes.

I would soak it in warm water with epsom salts, clean it with peroxide. Put on antibiotic ointment and bandage. I would do this twice a day. If it was not any better by Tuesday, call doc. If it grew a lot worse ie I got a fever or redness started traveling I would go to ER. Ibuprofen for pain

It is infected and it will just get worse. Can you go to one of those walk in places? I had this happen about 20 years ago and had to go to the er for it to be cut, drained and a tetanus short. It hurt like hell. I hope you feel better soon!!
** I wanted to add I had done the whole soaking and neo thing and it did not help at all before I went to the er.

I would have said that the cleaning with peroxide etc would be ok except for the line about your arm pit. You arm pit is quite a ways from your cuticle. I'd hesitate waiting until Tuesday for an antibiotic if the infection has already traveled that far.
Hope you feel better soon

Finally got some sleep. I woke up this morning and soaked it in salt water. Some puss came out. Really thick and yellow.
Da has a baseball game at 8:00 am, then I will got to a walk-in clinic. Cutting and draining is not something I want in my future.
Thanks

I'm all for home treatment - until the infection spreads. Then you need to be seen TODAY. Infections can spread and progress far faster than we'd like to think they can. I'd also worry that this is a particularly aggressive infection, due to the speed it traveled to your armpit. Good thoughts for you.

Yeah, what they said.... Hope some RX antibiotics will stem the spread of infection and that you feel better soon. Sounds painful ...

Any red lines going up your arm? If that happens, skip the walk in and go the er so you can get IV antibiotics. Good luck - hope you are feeling better soon!

Please get it checked. DH had a similar infection that got into the bone of his finger and it was a long drawn out process including surgery to finally heal it. He came very close to losing his finger.

I'm glad you had it seen.
If you don't see improvement with the oral antibiotic, i.e. increased pain, swelling or redness, high tail to the ER for iv antibiotics.

My SIL had a hangnail recently and picked at it. Her thumb became very swollen and red. She waited a couple of weeks and finally went to the doctor. She had staph...they weren't sure what kind so they put her on 2 different antibiotics in case it was MRSA. She went to a walk in clinic so I would suggest you do that, if you have one close.
I will also mention that an acquaintance had a similar situation with a hang nail. However, she ended up getting blood poisoning and could have died. Just from a little hangnail.

Paranychia. Soak it in peroxide while you're watching tv. Soak it for a long time. Feel better!
