Thanks for all of your great replies. I think I might be taking a trip to the shops today to check out the Kindle Paperwhite. Yes, I also bought the Paperwhite thanks to this board. lol. -- And, I'm not sure you can buy it anywhere but Amazon. ? I might be wrong about that though. You can save a bit of money by buying the one with ads. They aren't really ads like commercials, it's just promotions for new books and it comes on when you first turn on the device. They never pop up in the middle of reading, or at the end of a chapter or anything like that. The only problem with it, of course, is that you'll see more books you want to read. lol. Add me to the list of "I'll never use an e-reader, I like real books too much" people. Yeah, yeah, never say never, as my mom always said. I still read real books but I love the Paperwhite. As everyone else has said the screen looks just like a book, no glare like an iPad. You can read in the sun with it, unlike the iPad. It's very lightweight. I like to take it with me if I'm waiting to pick up someone, or waiting in the doctor's office, or whatever, because I can read whatever strikes me depending on what I'm in the mood for. I also love taking books out of the library, because they just disappear automatically when they're due. Great idea for people like me who always almost forget to take books back.

I love my kindle and will never go back to a paper book. For what it's worth, I was like you and loved a paper book.
A kindle paper white is not back lit, it is side lit. It appears back lit but the side lighting doesn't cause eye strain, like an iPad might. In fact, I'd bet your eye doctor will tell you to buy a lit kindle versus reading on your iPad. An iPad will ruin your eyes, a kindle paper white will protect them because you won't have eye strain and you'll have proper light when you read which further reduces eye strain. After my girls' last eye appt I went out and bought my then 8 yr old dd a paper white to reduce her eye strain because he said she must use proper light when reading, but she didn't always - enjoying to read in the car on long trips, etc.
There are other reasons I like my kindle. I find it far faster to read on. I can read more often and longer on my kindle, allowing me to read more. I always have a new book, it travels just so well (I no longer have three books for me and my girls on a week long trip) , and I can adjust the font size. It is just so user friendly for the person who loves to read.

I have a Kindle and these are the cons for me...
1. it doesn't have a backlight. 2. I see the title of the book when I start it and for the life of me I can never remember what I'm reading.
I actually read my Kindle books on my Samsung tablet. I prefer reading a real book.

I've never had eye strain with my regular Kindle unless I'm in bright sunlight. I've found that my eyes get tired at night. I like to change the font to a bigger size. I've found I read more with an e-reader because of that reason. I think it's nice not to have to keep a book open; especially when they are big paperback books.

I bought a Paperwhite last month and I can't believe how attached I am to it already. I used to love to read, but stopped when I was working so many hours that there wasn't even time to go to a bookstore anymore. I also signed up for the 30-day free trial of Kindle Unlimited. I've been reading a book every 24 hours since then.
My favorite part is NOT having the physical books around the house anymore. I read so much that finding somewhere to keep all the books was stressful. I love being able to toss it in my purse to be able to read while waiting in the doctor's office without anyone being able to comment on what I'm reading.

We have a couple of e-readers that we never use. I'm a traditionalist. I thought I could learn to love an e-reader but they just aren't my thing. I want to hold the book, pick it out by picking it up and reading the back, tuck it into my purse to read whenever I get a spare minute, etc.

I love reading, usually in bed for an hour or two before I sleep. I love books, I love turning the pages, feeling the weight in my hand, looking at how many pages I have left to read, looking at the pile of new books I have yet to read. But! I have just recently started to need reading glasses! I find them so uncomfortable whilst lying in bed reading! I'm wondering if the way forward is to buy a Kindle where I can adjust the font size so I can read in bed without my glasses. Also I spend most of my free time on my iPad, does using a Kindle "feel" the same as staring at an iPad screen? My eyes feel relief when I stop looking at the iPad and I start reading a book. Should I buy a Kindle or will I regret it and never use it? Update: Thanks for for all the great replies, I knew the refupeas would have some good advice. I bought a Kindle Paperwhite from John Lewis (dept store). Thanks to cadoodlebug I have downloaded No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay. Although I have started off reading The Girl On The Train, which I hadn't bought yet as I hate reading hardbacks. I was so comfortable reading my new Kindle in bed that I ended up reading till 2am! I only found one problem, which may be normal, but I am wondering if I have bought a faulty Kindle. When I touch to turn the page over, occasionally the screen turns black with white writing for a fraction of a second before returning to a white background. This happens about once in every ten turns. It doesn't spoil my enjoyment, but I'm worried it may mean the Kindle has a fault which may get worse. That doesn't sound right. I think I would take it back to the store and exchange it for another. Could be a lemon. Glad you like it though!!

About the screen turning black/white every ten turns: it might be refreshing itself in which case this is normal.

Mine does that on occasion. It's usually when I'm at the end of the chapter and I finish the page fairly quickly, almost like the kindle needs a second to catch up. I've also noticed it when I'm scrolling through pages quickly, like rereading a section for clarification.
