I love reading, usually in bed for an hour or two before I sleep. I love books, I love turning the pages, feeling the weight in my hand, looking at how many pages I have left to read, looking at the pile of new books I have yet to read. But! I have just recently started to need reading glasses! I find them so uncomfortable whilst lying in bed reading! I'm wondering if the way forward is to buy a Kindle where I can adjust the font size so I can read in bed without my glasses.
Also I spend most of my free time on my iPad, does using a Kindle "feel" the same as staring at an iPad screen? My eyes feel relief when I stop looking at the iPad and I start reading a book.
Should I buy a Kindle or will I regret it and never use it?
Update: Thanks for for all the great replies, I knew the refupeas would have some good advice. I bought a Kindle Paperwhite from John Lewis (dept store). Thanks to cadoodlebug I have downloaded No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay. Although I have started off reading The Girl On The Train, which I hadn't bought yet as I hate reading hardbacks. I was so comfortable reading my new Kindle in bed that I ended up reading till 2am!
I only found one problem, which may be normal, but I am wondering if I have bought a faulty Kindle. When I touch to turn the page over, occasionally the screen turns black with white writing for a fraction of a second before returning to a white background. This happens about once in every ten turns. It doesn't spoil my enjoyment, but I'm worried it may mean the Kindle has a fault which may get worse.

I think there are apps so that you can use your ipad as a reader.
Unless what you are really wanting is the matte appearance of the special e-reader ink that some kindles have. But before I even thought about investing in that, I'd go check out a couple of large-print books from the library. If you hate reading the larger font, then an e-reader with bigger words won't matter, and you'll just have to get used to the glasses.

I love the e-ink screen, there is no eyestrain like what I experience looking at a back lit screen. I don't know if you will like the Kindle for what you want it for though. I have the font size set slightly larger on mine and I get really irritated with how often I am pushing the button to turn the page. I understand why it's that way (larger letters=fewer displayed per page) but it drives me nuts to constantly be pushing the button.

I'd not thought about books with a large font, I'll look into that thanks. Using my iPad as a reader won't work as its too heavy. When I read in bed I'm pretty much in a sleeping position and like to hold my book in one hand. |

I have had a kindle since they came out. I loved books and didn't think I could convert, and then I loved my kindle. I used it a lot at the gym when I was on the treadmill, and I loved it for traveling because I could take a ton of books with me and not have to carry them. I like technology amazon came up with that made it very easy on the eyes and didn't overstimulate me with a bright screen. I loved holding something light and the ease of finding a position in a chair or bed. I loved that the price of books was significantly less--especially new releases/hardcovers.
Recently, though, for reasons unknown, I have gone back to books. I am still reading occasionally on my kindle, but I am really enjoying my books, too.
Do you know someone who has one that you might be able to borrow from for a couple of days to try it out?
I will continue to use mine, especially on vacations, and I appreciate all of the conveniences of the kindle. They really can't be beat. I just think there is something about the feel and smell of a book that can't be replicated electronically!

It's good to hear that there is no eye strain. My dad has a kindle, we don't live near each other but I'll check it out next time I visit. Thanks for your replies so far. I'm in the UK so I'm off to bed now to read my book :-). I'll check back in the morning.

I love my Kindle Voyage. It's actually my third e-ink (I have a K2 and K3). I also had a fire, but gave that to my parents. It was too heavy and I didn't like the glare. Plus, when I got my smartphone the Fire was kind of useless to me. I recently bought my DH the paperwhite.
Anyway the e-ink screen of the Voyage and Paperwhite is gentle on your eyes and you can adjust the backlighting for night reading and there's no glare in sun.

I still read books unless I am traveling, then the Kindle is easier. It is also easier to use at lunch to read while eating, but I still like a book and fighting to keep the book open to the current page. I love looking for books, reading the back cover, checking the front to see when the book was in print, scanning the font size, etc. I like my kindle and use it more for my 2 new addictions that I will blame on the DGS since he is the one that downloaded them - Candy Crush and Frozen.  It is easy to take into the kitchen if I need it for a recipe when I need it and then I don't have to unplug the laptop and lug it in there. I have no regrets in having the Kindle. |

I have a paperwhite, which gives you the E-ink screen. It's backlit, so I can read in both bright and low light. I love it for books, it's lightweight and connects easily via my computer to add and delete books. I was a long term hold out on the E-reader, but what finally swayed me was the ability to check out books from the library. I don't have to worry about returning them on time, it's automatic. One less thing to try and get into my busy schedule. I can check out books on the mac, then download them to the kindle through Amazon. VERY easy, I started with the nook, and it was such a PITA to upload anything I went back to checking out the actual books.

A resounding YES to buying a Kindle Paperwhite! It has changed my reading life and reading in bed is awesome  I still love and read paper books, but I would never go without my Paperwhite now that I've tried it. |

It does not have the kind of screens that tablets and computers have. My eyestrain has improved by leaps and bounds since buying the Paperwhite. |

I love the Kindle Paperwhite. I had a Sony e-reader, which I liked a lot, but I broke the screen, then I had a regular Kindle. I upgraded to the Kindle Paperwhite b/c I hated have to keep the light on or use a book light so my husband and dog can sleep. I love it.

I love my Kindle Paperwhite. I have an iPad that I love as well, but my eyes do get tired when I am on it for any length of time. Kindle all of the way for me!

And, I love the convenience of eBooks and how easy it is to hit a digital library late at night for a new book when the mood hits. If my Paperwhite dies, I'll be on Amazon to buy a new one within the hour. |

jesq - I splurged on the Voyage because I turned in my CC points for $125 (or maybe it was $150) Amazon gift card. I really like that the lighting changes automatically, because I read outside a lot and in bed at night (or 4am!), so no manually changing it. It also has "buttons" to turn the pages. So you press a certain spot rather than swipe. I usually hold my kindle with only my right hand, so this works better for me. On my DHs paperwhite he has to manually change the lighting and he swipes to turn pages. However with my 47 year old eyes I can't tell the difference in the resolution - the Voyage is supposed to be better. And the Voyage is smaller, but not by much. If I bought another I probably wouldn't splurge, unless got a really good deal. I always buy the 3G, no ad version. DH wanted "whatever is cheaper". So I got him wi-fi only with ads. Then I had to explain that reading on his phone then switching to the PW won't auto update unless he's connected to wi-fi. But he can forward to his spot manually. I bought us both covers that turn it off automatically. I bought the off-brand Finite version, not the expensive Kindle version. So it turns on or off when you open or close the cover. I hope this helps.

I too like the feel of books and turning pages. The library is only a couple of blocks away so I kept saying no to the kindle. I got one and I have to say I love it. I am on it everyday. It is great for traveling. I just recently connected to the online library and really like ordering books and not having to wait at the library for them and going during their hours. So I would say yes, I would get a kindle

I've got a Kindle. Used it for a couple of books and now it sits in my office. I like real books. Also, I don't buy books because I have a really great library a couple of blocks from me. However, the only way to know is to buy or borrow one. My good friend bought hers because I talked her into it when I got mine and she thanks me constantly for convincing her to buy it.

My Kindle Fire died last week. I'd used it every single day for about 3 years. I loved it, but in reality, it was too much Kindle for what I needed, I never surfed the web on it, all I did was read. I replaced it with the Paperwhite and I love it way more than the Fire (which I wouldn't have thought possible). It's so much easier on my eyes, plus, today I read while sat by the pool. I didn't have to sit in the shade, I didn't have to keep moving the Kindle to the perfect angle to prevent glare, I could read it in full sunlight. Love love love it.

It was developed so that it would simulate reading paper. It does not have the potential to interfere with sleep as a computer screen or television does. |

I love my Kindle, and I absolutely HATE having to read a "real" book now. I do NOT miss the weight or feel or smell or anything else about real books.  I compare it to digital Vs film cameras - I don't miss film cameras either! |
