Being a military family we think of all types of Kool-aid as bug juice. Reason being for us, is back in the day, Kool-aid had Bugs Bunny on their label and kool-aid supplied the military. Military folk love their nicknames, hence "bug juice".
ETA-the military still refers to any powdered drink as bug juice.

When I used to go to summer camp as a kid, and then as a counselor when I was a teen, bug juice always referred to the beverage. Usually it was red Kool-Aid, but sometimes orange or lemonade. I never really thought about why it was called bug juice. I think the first time I heard it called that was when we had red Kool_Aid and I thought maybe it meant the bugs blood? Eew...

So where are those of you who are familiar with the turn from? I went to camp for many years as a kid and it wasn't a thing in the PNW. I never heard it in MN in college either, but not sure it would have cause to come up. My camp was outside of Rochester, NY.

Bug juice is what DH and I call windshield washer fluid. just the summer stuff. The winter stuff that doesn't freeze is windshield washer fluid.

I've heard it used for the sugary drink as well as bug/mosquito repellent but mostly now use it for windshield washer fluid, especially in summertime or you could be driving blind. I actually just added "bug juice" to my grocery/buy list as I just ran out on my last drive.
