When I was growing up, bug juice was a mixture of a can of reconstituted grape juice and a can of reconstituted lemonade with water added. I guess the lemon pulp was supposed to resemble "bugs".

kool-aid or other very cheap fruit flavored kids drink served at a camp. The sugar attracted kids and bugs.

I colloquially called mosquito repellent 'bug juice' when the kids were little, but beyond that, I have never heard the term used for anything else.

I'd never heard of the term "bug juice" until today on this forum. I also hadn't ever heard of "skeeter dope". Here, Kool Aid is Kool Aid and we refer to mosquito repellant by the brand name we buy, which is Off.

It isn't terminology that I use, now, or as a child.

Nope, don't know that phrase either. If it's an insect repellent, I would just say fly killer.

Wasn't even koolaid. It was like generic hi-c. Usually orange flavored. I kind of imagine that it's what they now give pregnant women for their glucose test.

A patient recently asked me for some bug juice to drink...I was told it was a mixture of cranberry juice and ginger ale... We only had sprite to mix it with and he was equally pleased. He was about 90 and said his mom made it for him growing up...
The only thing I heard prior to this was a kool aid type drink for kids that came in miniature water bottles

So where are those of you who are familiar with the turn from? I went to camp for many years as a kid and it wasn't a thing in the PNW. I never heard it in MN in college either, but not sure it would have cause to come up.

I had forgotten about it until my kids went off to scout camps and school activities (90s era) and had bug juice but being military brats they were exposed to a wide range of regionalisms that weren't necessarily related to where we lived.

The directors that were there most of the time that I was, were from other parts of the country, one from Missouri and I don't remember where the others were from.

I'm one of the ones who commented on the other thread.
I'm from NJ. I never went to summer camp, so I'm not sure where I originally heard it. I know that's what we called the red stuff we got w/our pizza on the boardwalk.

I'm from the northeast (Massachusetts) and my Mom called the drink we had occasionally during the summer "bug juice." She never went to camp and only my brothers who were boy scouts had ever gone to camp. For us it was never Kool Aid but rather ZaRex.

"Bug juice" is red koolaid or red punch of some kind and camps always served it. I assume it was called "bug juice" because it was so sweet that it attracted bugs. ? lol at this thread. Who knew there were so many definitions for "bug juice".
