Our basement bedrooms have ledges around the room. How can I hang curtains so that they will hang straight and go to the floor? Is there a special kind of curtain rod or extender for a regular rod so that it will stick out further? Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by a ledge - where it is or how big, but in some older homes that have really large, ornate window trim and crown molding, they mount the rod to the ceiling... Just as you'd mount it to the wall - the brackets, finials, etc, but it gets moved out far enough from the wall the the curtains can drape properly and not look bumpy with trim behind them...

If your ledge is like the one in my parents raised ranch, you are talking about a 10 - 12" ledge. I'm not sure you can put floor length curtains up that won't look odd. We just put up curtains that hung to the ledge. Sorry I wasn't any help at all. For what it's worth, I don't have any floor length curtains in my house. I have forced hot water heat and there are registers under most every window. I never really understood why everyone wants there curtains to go to the floor either, seems like a waste of wall space and fabric to me. Sorry again for not being any help.

I think I know what you're talking about with the basement ledge - we have one, too.
What if you used a double rod that's designed for hanging sheers inside a regular curtain. That might stick out from the wall far enough if you removed the inside rod and hung your panels on the outside rod.
Another option might be to hang a rod from the ceiling.

I have the same problem. When we finished our basement DH and I thought the ledge was a good idea, but NO IT WASN'T. I wish we'd gone with the flat wall instead, just for this very reason. I ended up cutting my curtains so they only went to the ledge, but one of these days I'm going to do as anniebeth24 mentioned above and use a double rod, with only a curtain on the outermost rod.

There are some really nice track systems that you can mount on wall or ceiling. I just used wall mounted when I changed my curtains, but ceiling mounted looks great too. We got ours at Menards, but Penneys has one too.

Thanks. I really don't like the look of curtains that hang only to the ledge. I would say that the ledge is about 6 inches deep. I was hoping there was some kind of extender that I could find inexpensively, but will look at the other options here.

I have no idea what this ledge looks like, but can you hang the curtains from the ceiling instead of how they would hang on a wall normally?

I would have thought the curtains would look odd if you tried to cover the ledge and didn't have them hanging flush to the window and wall

They do make curtain rods with a larger "return". That's the part that sticks out from the wall. If you can't find an affordable curtain rod with a 6" return, I would cut some blocks of wood. Paint them the color of the wall and mount them to the wall. Then mount the curtain rods to that. I think it would blend in well enough so that it's not too obvious. Or you could get the kind of curtain rod that the curtain wraps around the side of the rod to the wall.

I recently purchased curtains and rods at IKEA to close off my dining room from my living room and entry to make it a temporary bedroom for my mom since all my bedrooms are upstairs. They had many types of rods and returns. They also had a bracket-shaped closet rod that extends from the wall about 8 inches or so that could be used as a curtain rod if your curtains were the type with tabs on top like I ended up purchasing. I like the idea of the curtains extending to the floor rather than to the ledge.

If you get the extender you'll need wider curtains so they go around the extender to the wall at the top on the bracket.

I used black Ikea curtain rods for my split level home. Brackets do stick out so the curtains don't rest on the ledge. I'm still waiting to see the pic coz we had to leave before the work was done. House is going to be in the market soon and I hope it looks good. I'll post a pic later. I spent a lot of time searching for some kind of output on this but couldn't find any. I got some beautiful curtains from home goods, threw away dirty blinds and keepin my fingers crossed. I'm not driving 10 hours to switch to small curtains or blinds.

I would go with the ceiling mount and hang it out enough for the curtains to go straight down to the floor.

I recently saw online somewhere (Pinterest, probably) where someone used a curved shower curtain rod as a window curtain rod, probably for this same reason. Maybe that would work for you?

Umbra makes some rod brackets that extend a fair distance from the wall...
Might be a silly question, but you're mounting the rod on the wall and not inside/inset into where the window is, yes? Unless you're trying to mount the hardware inset/set back from her wall, most places should have rod brackets that will hold drapes 6" out... Around here at least, it's not the practice to hang floor length drapes inset...

On a side note--Why do the photos show the ledge on every wall in the room? Is it functional, or just a decorative feature?
I think I'd have it covered with odds and ends that I needed to set somewhere...and end up with a cluttered look.
