Okay.. table wise I've been on the hunt. I have a dining table I like fine, it seats six.. maple top, and the seats of the chairs are maple, the rest is black. I had a kitchen table that took some abuse over time.. craft projects, and my son broke one of the chairs by goofing around. I sold it on Craigslist for $175 a few months ago. I've had an idea of what I want (round table, smaller, for the kitchen, just something not huge, you know).. In fairness to DH, I mentioned more than once the idea of distressed white. In fairness to me, I talk a lot about ideas that I would like and it doesn't mean I'll do ALL of them. I saw a clock table on a refinishing site here that I love a lot. And I found a round table/chairs for $85 which, score! Contacted the furniture refinisher, who will turn my table into the clock table for $200. Here's the debate. We love the clock (that we agree on) but it's the rest. He thinks the white distressing would look fine, and I think the way it is looks lovely. What would you do.. clock table the way it is in the picture? Make the chairs the distressed white in the sample picture? Make the chairs a whole different color? Here's the unfinished "before" This is the white/cream distressed finish DH thinks would work (mainly because he believes if I don't do it, I will regret it since I talked about that finish in the past.) And here's the clock table. I love it.

I'd do it the way it is in the picture. Love that. I wouldn't care for the distressed white.

What a beautiful table! It is hard for me to tell from the photo, but are the chairs painted black in that last photo? I would leave it as is in the bottom photo (or paint the chairs if they are not actually that colour). I think that putting a lighter distressed finish on the chairs would detract from the table top, which you want to be the focus. I think the darker, plain chairs anchor the table and compliment it without competing with it. I always love a thrifty deal, and what a great transformation for a second hand table and chair set!

That distressed finished is just a bit too distressed for me. I agree with heartcat, keeping the chairs dark will make sure the focus is on your table. I think if you give the chairs that distressed finish, it will look too busy, and detract from the table.

I like the distressed white....plus that is what y'all discussed for a while. I think you would be satisfied with it.

I like the wood. I think distressed would be too busy with the clock top. You can always distress it later after you have lived with it for awhile.

Marry the two. White distressed top and black base.

I like the mixed finishes in the bottom photo. That looks more custom to me than all one color. It really makes the "clock" the feature as well.

Bottom pic. Love the way the black chairs reflect the black numerals. So pretty, and a bit different. Like the wood/black best, but if you are set on the white/cream distressed look, I also think it could also look very nice depending on the color of the room. What a great idea!

I also like the way it looks in the bottom photo. I love the white distressed look, but I think it will end up looking like you're trying to match the clock face and not quite hitting it.
What's your address, btw? Not that I'm coming over to steal your table or anything . . . .

That was my thought. I think the black chairs work best with the table top but DH just HAS to argue with me. Marry the two. White distressed top and black base. Happy medium... I'll have to consider that, thanks. I like the chairs black or even as they are now. I also like that your thread title is grammatically correct! Thank you, I try. "DH and I" would grate on me.

What's your address, btw? Not that I'm coming over to steal your table or anything . . . . Exactly. I think it would be too busy and I want the clock to pop out. I'm pretty happy that it's working out. She had posted another clock table on her site months ago, that I missed out on, and it just now occurred to me to ask her if she could do it again. Then finding a table for $85? Can't beat that, and I don't have to lift a finger. It turns out I live right between her home and shop, so she's happy to pick it up and bring it back. (I'm going to pay extra even though she didn't ask, just for her kindness.) I have to stop stalking her though. She refinished a 9-drawer dresser in slate grey and white with new antiqued hardware that is stunning, and I feel like I have to have it. ($225! Another good deal, I think.) If I find the place to put it...

Black chairs match the clock table the best. White distressed chairs would only make everything too white.

I would do the chairs black to coordinate with the clock letters. I would also paint the table black and then have the clock face done on the top surface exactly as pictured.
I have a round table in my kitchen too. I could make letter templates with my cutting machine. I may just borrow this idea.
Be sure to post a picture for us when your set is finished.

karmic- Are you willing to post the shop's name? I'm fairly certain you moved to the St. Louis area, & live by where my DH works. Now that I appear to be a crazy-ass stalker, I'd love to see this ladies other work.
Because that clock table, I want that so very bad. I have a clock obsession, no idea where it cme from. But I've been collecting all manner of clocks from around the world, & that table is calling my name!

I think if you went with that light distressed look, your clock face would have to be dark with lighter numbers. I like the darker wood.

I love the distressed white. However, which fits better in your house. My house is full of white washed.
