We are fine here, just can't get out of the neighborhood. DH tried to go to work and made it to the nearby main intersection that crosses the bayou. The intersection was completely under water, along with the ones to the east and west, so he is working from home today.
Lots of people aren't as lucky, so any positive energy you could spare would be great. Many people are flooded who didn't during Alison or Alicia.

I know y'all will appreciate this. My work sent out an email at 7:02 am, saying that there was a delayed opening until 10:00. Given that most people start work between 6:30-7:30, it really didn't help. Then at 9:52, they sent another email saying that the office was closed due to the weather, followed by another at 10:11 saying if you were already at work you could just go ahead and stay. And they wonder why employees are jaded and cynical.

linkSchool districts that closed today will be granted a waiver if they apply for it. Let's hope they do! The mayor is speaking right now. They have over 750 cars in impound. The picture on the split screen shows some people kayaking in the bayou. That seems dangerous today.

That's terrible. I'm very sorry for them. I hope the storms let up and the damage isn't too much to handle for them

Fort Bend County already got a school waiver, so they don't have to make up the day.
I do think it is very dangerous to be out on the newly created rivers, even in a kayak. Just to easy to get swept to who knows where?

My district applied for the waiver! So no kids on Friday after all.
I'm afraid we have a significant number of students who are temporarily homeless - a couple of the apartment complexes that feed our school were hard hit - so the next couple of days will be rough and crazy anyway.

Let me tell you about my day in Houston.
I left at 530 am (my normal time) not evening thinking there would be issues as I didn't turn on the TV that early in the AM. Coming in on Westpark Toll I didn't see any issues until around 59. Westpark Toll closed under 59, which I expected as it goes low in that area. So I merged onto 59 and that's when I realized, oh crap. Traffic wasn't moving I noticed on my phone that nearly every highway was closed including the 3 routes I would take into the Med Center. Crap. I managed to exit 59 by going up an on ramp onto the side streets. Made it successfully to Richmond and started going down that direction towards city. Some high waters but not bad enough with my SUV. Right around 610 and Richmond it got deep. I pulled into a parking lot and watched people. It was during this time that I saw an email from my daycare saying they were closed...double crap. After about 15 minutes and watching numerous SUVs that were smaller than me get pass the water, I braved it and made it into the loop. From there I had NO problems getting to the medical center. Bayou behind us was nearing coming over the banks though. So my normal 35 min commute was 1.5 hours today. Hubby took baby into work as I wasn't going to be getting out of the city any time soon. Luckily, a friend who stays home was able to watch him until I could leave work early around 1 pm. Great, water is down should be easy to get home....nope. Tow truck decided to cut me off on the freeway (going 65 mph) and clipped the front of my car. He continued to drive and didn't stop. I chased him down (stupid I know, but I was furious) and he tried to run me off the road as I tried to snap photos of his plates and company name. Stopped at a light and yelled at him to pull over to get info and he said he didn't hit me and drove off....sure, but you knew you did something as you tried to ram me off the road. No worries I had pictures.
I guess the positive said is I called his towing company and told them the issues. Sent them pictures of him driving and his company logo. I was worried they wouldn't give my insurance info as you can't see the plate since his towing gear was blocking sight of it. Needless to say, they called me back and give me all their insurance info and I've already placed a claim.
Seriously....one of the worst days I've had in some time.

The worst part is, since they canceled school today, now we have to have students through Friday! *sob* And teacher work day is now Monday June 1st! OK, there are definitely worse things, but teachers nearing the end of the school year will feel my pain on this. We had a KIPP Academy from Houston scheduled to visit the museum today but they cancelled due to weather. And, yes, I may not be a classroom teacher but I KNOW everyone is ready for school to be done My DD got flooded this weekend in San Marcos. She has moved out of her house, it is uninhabitable.

Prayers for Texas! It's sad what I'm seeing on the news about the mom and her two children swept away in the vacation home they were in.

Merge - I almost forgot that you were supposed to close on your new house last week. Did you have to move in the midst of all this rain? Hopefully it went well if you've already moved. We moved in Saturday, before the serious rain started. So far, so good!

mother nature can be so fickle and cruel. California could really use lots of that rain to end the drought and Houston needs to have waaayyy less. But we couldn't handle the amount they are getting here either. Our streets start to flood with about one inch of rain around here. I would live to see about half to an inch a week though for the next few months. I do hope you get some relief soon and can dry out without further damage or loss of life. That much rain is unimaginable

Thank you Merge I'm feeling better now that I have a claim started. I just hate having to pay when someone else hits my car. It's less than 2 years old!
