I think I am the only person that I know that doesn't like any sort of background noise. It's just DH and I and when we're both home (or I'm home alone), the TV is NEVER on unless we're actively watching it. I don't listen to the news or music when making dinner or anything. DH works at home full time and when I work at home as well, I'll occasionally hear music from his office, but it's just not something that I've ever grown accustomed to. I guess I just lead a very quiet life.
This may also be why when we have family for the holidays that I am almost a nervous wreck by the time it's over. The TV is constantly on and there are people always TALKING.
Do you do background noise?

I used to. Then I had kids I think it started with me needing it to be quiet so I could hear if the baby was crying, making sure they didn't wake up because of the tv or radio... Now they are bigger and make a lot more noise themselves, so I like for it to be quiet when they are sleeping or at school. My head just needs the quiet time.

I come from a large family so holiday gatherings are always loud and chaotic. That must be why I like having something on in the background. I even sleep with the TV on very softly at night. I don't like dead silence.

I do - mostly out of habit but for the last couple of years my ears ring so badly that I need something to drown it out. :/

Right outside my office is a huge air compressor that kicks on several times a day. I don't even notice it anymore, but if I'm on the phone with someone when it kicks on it always startles them. If people are in my office chatting, they close my door.

My husband always slept with a fan on for background noise. I can't sleep without a fan, and neither can the kids. We even take our fans (one for us, one for the kids) when we travel or we can't sleep.
I do have something on when I clean most of the time. I usually have my The Middle or The Goldbergs dvds on my computer as I go from room to room. It "helps" me get my cleaning done! Sometimes I have on music. I can't have the tv on, it distracts me. But the dvds work well!

I don't like chaotic noise, loud noise, unnecessary noise or more than one sort of noise at a time. I have to be in the mood to have the radio on and quite often I just enjoy the quiet.

One of the very few things that my dh and I do not agree with is the need to have the telly on all the time! He has it on from the moment he gets up until we go to bed..I've had to learn to screen it out as we're both retired and our apartment is open plan.

YES. I like to either have the TV, or radio on while doing things around the house. It gets TOO quiet around here without it. We sleep with 2 fans on. We have decided we need to take a floor fan with us on vacation from now on, because hotel rooms are too quiet, and rental houses always have ceiling fans that make a loud racket while we try to sleep.

Yes, I almost always have podcasts (unless I'm seriously reading or writing) or music going. I don't like TV as background noise - the visual distraction is too much for me.
Sometimes I do enjoy silence, but more often than not, I have something going.

My hubs always has TV or radio going. Doesn't bother me as I like talk radio. I don't do TV unless I am watching it. However, I like to turn everything off so that I can hear the birds or noises in the neighborhood. Just recently he is starting to like the silence at times. I guess, for me it is more about what mood I'm in and what I am doing at the time.

yup... we are a background noise household. Most of the time, the tv is on. When I am working (at work) and need to really focus, I will put my headphones on and play music on my iPod (music I'm really familiar with, so I'm not focusing on IT). We have a fan on for white noise when we sleep, have three cats, and three dogs... so the house is never really quiet, even if the television isn't on.
I do appreciate quiet sometimes (there's nothing quite like quiet relaxing outside- even then you can hear the wind rustling through the palm trees), but most of the time there's some amount of noise.

I never add deliberate noise such as tv or radio but I live right at the only stop lights in town and on the highway. So it is never really quiet in my house. For sleep I must have a fan on and the little bit of noise from it helps deaden the traffic noise.

I hate noise in general.
I believe that all noise should be purposeful.
Music only if you are paying attention to it (ie singing or dancing). TV only if you are actively watching it.
I hate humming, whistling, shaking keys or coins under any circumstances.
I find even talking to be exhausting.
Talk radio makes me physically ill. As in if I am around it too long I will actually get sick to my stomach and vomit.
I prefer silence, actually.

I have horrible ringing in my ears non stop that I need background noise. But I love my "quiet time" which isn't dead quiet but usually a lower volume tv on or at night sleeping we always have a fan running. Even then I hear the ringing but it helps. I don't love crazy constant background noise though.

I don't like background noise. If I am home alone, I don't turn on the TV or radio just for the noise.
I like a fan at night, but only because I am post-menopausal and I get so HOT.

I always have a fan going. Always. If I'm cold I point it towards the wall, but if it's not whirring I freak out. Television and things like that will drive me batshit crazy though. DH likes to fall asleep with the TV on. I cannot sleep with the TV on at all. Fortunately, his bedtime is earlier than mine so I can turn it off when I get in the bed.

When trying to sleep I need a fan on or our window unit AC.
When I'm awake and alone I don't like a lot of noise.

Yes, I have background noise. It's called tinnitus.

I'm kind of with myshelly on this one, except I've never been known to vomit from excess talk radio. Near the new place I've been hiking daily, there's a church nearby that plays a synthesized ding-dong bell from 12-12:30. I try to hike to avoid walking at that time, but sometimes it's unavoidable. But I freely admit to being filled with a very unchurchlike murderous rage when all I want to do is walk quietly and meditatively in the woods with the wind in the trees and birds softly chirping, only to be assaulted by the bell.

Most of the time I do. I have constant tinnitus and background noise helps me ignore it. However, sometimes I am prone to sensory overload so even though I have the ringing I can't handle the extra noise.

I like silence, but background noise keeps MaxTheBeagle from alerting to random noises and having a barking fit.

lol @ peano! I love the sound of church bells, but they definitely have to be 'real' church bells,. not the synthesized ones! I guess I've gotten used to some amount of noise; it's very loud where I work (offices right across the hallway from loud manufacturing equipment) but I do appreciate the quiet sometimes, as well. To the posters who've said you have tinnitus problems: is there anything to help that at all?? Is it tough to get used to, or do you sort of 'block' it out like any other noise?

I do. Fan at night. Radio at the office. Music or TV at home. I don't like pure quiet.

Love quiet. The main floor of my house is too noisy for me. Fan over the stove, washer and/or dryer going. Dogs feet clattering on the flooring. I like to retreat upstairs and hide from sounds.

If it's just me at home, the only background noise you'll hear is the a/c, and three little snoring dogs. If DH is home, he usually has the TV on, even if he is working on something else.

Depends on my mood. I really like the quietness of not having anything making noise. But there are times I need noise. Like when I sleep I need the tv or music on.

My brain shuts it out unless I'm lying in bed trying to sleep. Then I notice it, but it doesn't irritate me (except for the knowledge that I have an affliction...)
