I love peace and quiet too. If I'm working at my desk in the evening, I might put on Spotify, but I'm just as likely not to. DS can spend hours every night talking on FaceTime to friends and it drives me crazy. I can never hear him speaking, but because his phone is always turned up to 11, I can hear his tinny friends!
I live on a busy main road, so there's almost always traffic noise, and even after 17 years in this house, it can still annoy me.

DH has the TV on 24/7 for background noise. As soon as he leaves, I turn it off. We sleep in separate bedrooms, because he needs the TV and I need quiet. If it's just DD and me at home, we can just quietly read or she will be on her ipad while I read.

If Dh is in the house the tv is on. Loud. 24/7. If I am here by myself, nothing is on. I used to like music playing, I love music and am a singer, but I am so happy to have quiet if Dh is out of the house (he's retired...) that I just don't want to break the silence! Also, I work at Primary School as a lunch lady, so I do relish quiet when I find it!
I feel for you gals with tinnitus, a good friend has it and it can be miserable.

To the posters who've said you have tinnitus problems: is there anything to help that at all?? Is it tough to get used to, or do you sort of 'block' it out like any other noise? There is nothing that helps. I can always hear it unless the other noise is absolutely super loud -- like when we went to a Queen concert last year. I mostly ignore it except that I find that background noise actually makes me notice it more. It's like there are two+ inputs and my brain is trying to sort out what is a priority. And when nothing I'm hearing is a priority like if I can hear my tinnitus plus a radio playing, then it becomes a battle for my brain to make sense of the inputs, then for my brain to decide to ignore them both. That gets really irritating really fast. I explained it once to my kids that it's like if you were in a small room with two different radios on at the same time and you had focus on only one.

It depends. If I'm crafting or doing a lot of computer work I'll often have the tv on to some show I don't have to pay much attention to for the background noise. If I'm cleaning or cooking or reading I don't like the radio or anything on. At night I do turn on a fan to drown out the noise of the neighborhood.

Most of the time I have five kids around making plenty of background noise so anything else can feel like an annoyance but in general it doesn't bother me to have background noise. But I don't prefer it. My husband is more like you describe and hates background noise. He would never ever have the TV on while doing something else. He doesn't like music playing as background noise either!

Totally quiet until I got my Amazon Echo. Now I have her set with a Pandora station called meditation by the sea. It's beautiful relaxing music with sounds of calming water. I'm really enjoying it. It seems to sooth the dogs too. Normally before my Echo, house was quiet unless I was watching the tv.

When I am awake and alone, I do not have any sort of music/t.v. going. I am quite happy to have the quiet and my own thoughts.
Dh likes some kind of background noise, so when he is home the t.v. is usually on. It doesn't bother me, I can tune it out, but when I am alone I don't want it or feel the need for it.
Sleeping is different. I like white noise when I sleep...we both do...and we run a fan year round.

I feel for those who live with ringing in their ears. I don't have ringing but I can hear the blood pulsing through the vein (or artery, or whatever it is) near my right ear. This is the result of a major surgery on that inner ear almost 25 years ago. When I described the sound to my doctor he told me exactly what it is. Sometimes I don't notice it but right now it might as well be a freight train.
At home I choose not to put on noise unless I'm going to actually watch the tv. Dh puts the tv on just for the noise.
I work in an environment with a LOT of background noise. When I leave at the end of the day I'm so grateful for silence!

I prefer silence. So no tv or radio on unless I'm actively watching/listening. But I do run a fan at night to mask other sounds that are irritating and intermittent like neighborhood dogs and windchimes.

I have a sound machine on at night or a fan but during the day if it is not humid out during warm months I like the windows and doors open to hear the birds/nature...

I kinda have to have background noise. Otherwise, I start to wonder if my hearing aid died. If it's really quiet and I'm home alone and I hear some noise, I get nervous. The background noise is there for my sanity. If I really need to focus on whatever I'm working on, I'll put on music. Otherwise, I usually just find a marathon of reruns that I can handle and have seen 100 times so it's just there to keep me company. I've found that I cannot sleep with my aid in because the littlest sound keeps me up so whatever white noise, etc my DH likes, it never bothers me because without my aid, I don't hear a thing. My ex used to joke that I was the only one who never complained about his snoring.

Silence exhausts me. It makes my mind go into hyperdrive to compensate for the lack of stimulation. I need something to occupy my mind while I work, otherwise disaster. Occasionally silence is necessary, but most of the time I have something going on in the background. Silence is NOT golden. Especially when I sleep.

Generally speaking, there is already far too much excess noise in my life. Between the kid constantly chattering, the kid's seemingly incessant Clifford or other kid shows on Netflix, the dogs barking at every stupid thing (even the wind or leaves blowing in the yard ) or their toenails clattering on the tiled floors, or DH and his TV that must be turned on the minute he walks in the door, it's all just much too much. I have a radio and speakers for my iPad in my office to listen to music but I rarely turn either of them on. I have a tv down there too but it's more for DD's entertainment than for me (though I might set it up for streaming music when I have people over for crops in the future). When I'm home by myself (which is really rare these days) the TV almost never gets turned on unless it's to watch the news. There have been times when DH has been away for a few days that the TV hasn't been turned on once! I don't like noise while I sleep at all.

I vote for no background noise. I work at home and the nature of my work requires it be quiet so I can think.
My husband likes white noise during the night, so we have a fan running. I was afraid I would get acclimated to it and not be able to sleep when I travel for work, but it's not been a problem.
We listen to music or NPR or podcasts sometimes, and I also listen to them in the car, but this:
YES. Silence is restorative. People talking at me for extended periods of time lobotomizes me. Also we don't watch television. I was realizing yesterday we haven't turned it on in several months (since last season of Downton), and we should just sell it and be done with it.

I do not like background noise. I have no TV or radio in my bedroom. In fact, I was recouping from surgery and I said to my son, "Why can't I just lay in my bed and hear nothing instead of the tractor (from the landscape service in my community)?" It's like silence is almost impossible to achieve.
It's weird because I love to go to scrapbooking crops but hate the noise associated with them. There is one I go to where the only noise most of the time is conversations, but other ones people are playing you tube videos, using their phones to play music coming out of that tiny speaker, and then the assorted die cutting machines of course. I have a pair of ear plugs that I take in and out but I can still hear a lot of noise through them. Probably need noise cancelling head phones.
I hear the ceiling fan go click click click and it irritates the heck out of me. I should probably live way out in the country someplace where only birds chirp and nothing else. I think that would be wonderful.

I usually do. The kids watch tv before school, and I don't turn it off after they leave. Sometimes I will leave it on whatever channel they had it on, sometimes I will change it to the music station.
And I said usually... today, DD#2 got out of school early and we haven't had the tv on all day. I'm on the computer and she's on the iPad.

when I'm working in my craft room, I need background noise. usually it's the t.v. with a movie or show I've seen before so I don't get distracted but I like having sound in the background. total silence is deafening.

When I'm home I spend an awful lot of time on my own so I like music on, very loud music! Sex on Fire is the best song to mop the floor to...ever. I don't like noise when I'm trying to sleep, so no tv allowed in the bedroom.

Thanks for the replies! And I'm sorry for all of the folks with tinnitus. I had no idea it was so common. That must suck.
When we got a new TV in the living room, I put the old one in my craft room. You know, so that I could watch tv while I scrapped or stamped. It's been over a year and it has never been turned on. I should give that thing away and reclaim the space.

I can't stand background noise and really don't understand folks who have to have it-isn't there enough noise in today's world as it is? But different strokes for different folks and all that. We are all different and have different needs. I get that.
I love silence. To just relax and rewind. I love music very, very much. I do have that on when I'm driving (always and usually I'm singing along as well) sometimes when I'm scrapping or cleaning.
he TV is only on when I'm actively watching-I can't stand to have that noise on otherwise. Scrapping-no fing way! Way too much distraction and it breaks my creative mood. It's just NOISE then. I do enjoy the TV very much when I am actively sitting down and watching it.
To sleep I prefer silence-no fans or machines. Although living here we do have a lighthouse off shore that makes a lot of noise during foggy nights (Thomas Point Lighthouse out in the Chesapeake) It's actually a soothing sound and we've come to love it. I would really miss it if we'd ever have to move from here.

In February I had to move my classroom out to a portable. The air pretty much runs all the time (especially now, otherwise we're cooking by 9am), and at first it really bugged us. Now, when the timer the air is on runs out, my kids jump up to turn it back on. We can't stand it when it's totally silent.
I don't mind some quiet but usually I like music or white noise to keep me focused.
I also sleep with a fan on at night. College habit that never broke.

Well at work they installed these "white noise" speakers all over the place. It's like sitting on an airplane all damn day. It's that loud. Somedays I feel like I'm going to go ballistic just sitting there. That's all I can hear. That hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Sometimes at home I like the radio

There is always a kid talking, cat meowing, noise happening somewhere.

I love noise. I love it so much that when I'm in a place where there isn't any, my ears ring in the biggest way. When we lose power, it's horrible. LOL I always have music playing. And at night, I run a fan. I'm a very light sleeper so I need noise to drown out the small noises so they don't wake me up.
