Do you call the police if you witness a physical altercation, or a verbal altercation that appears to be escalating/serious?
(Yes, this question was prompted because two guys have been arguing in the street for 20 minutes and then started fighting).

Yes. I'd rather call and it be nothing than not call and have someone be seriously injured or killed.

Yes. If it were verbal, I'd probably call the non-emergency line ... it's not life threatening. If someone was swinging, I'd call 911.

What I don't get is how people film it and don't help. did you see that guy who filmed the fight in a brooklyn mcdonalds? he got charged with inciting a riot. (slightly off topic, i know).

Yes. I called once when a group of young people pulled up in their cars onto our quiet street late one night and started arguing and pushing each other around. The cops showed up quickly and broke it up.

must live a sheltered life! I have never witnessed a fight or anything of the sort. The biggest crime I have ever seen was bad drivers. If I could get their license, I would call the police. But he/she is usually driving to fast!

I've called 911 twice when I wasn't sure if I should. First time was for a verbal altercation I couldn't see but I heard. It was years ago as I was picking my kids up from their home day care provider. I heard a man yelling vile things at someone. I didn't know exactly where it was coming from but I couldn't let it go. The 911 operator did not make me feel very good about calling; but I was glad I did.
The second call was last Summer. There was a young man (late teens-early 20's standing on a street corner pacing with a sign saying his dog was for sale. I had an uneasy feeling. I just felt the kid was on drugs. It was a major intersection. I pulled over not far away and called 911. This time the operator thanked me and said they would send a car right over.

I was driving around town one afternoon, minding my own business, when I drove by a parking lot of a empty business. There were probably about 100 teenagers standing around in a big circle, with a couple of them inside the circle fighting. I suppose it was the equivalent to the old 'meet me at flag pole after school to settle this' of my youth, but those kids where really going at it.
I called 911 for that. And, I live in a small enough community that the 911 operator told me that they had been flooded with calls and the police were on their way. Just about that time, a bunch of police cars started pulling up and the teens started scattering as quickly as they could.

I did.
A friend and I were sitting in a parking lot killing time (I needed to meet someone at the airport for a late flight). It was a warm night and our windows were down. I heard what I thought was the flag flapping in the wind. When I looked in my mirror, I saw a guy on the ground as 2 others were beating him up. He was yelling help and stop. I called 911. About the time I got them on the phone, they let him go and he took off. The 2 guys got in their truck and drove over to the food place in the parking lot. Scared the daylights out of us.

The only time I have seen a street fight was in a former neighborhood. Two men old enough to know better, started swinging. Other neighbors broke it up and it was over. Where I live now, I don't even get trick-or-treaters let alone fighters!

I would call. My main concern is that one of them would pull out a gun, or that a friend with a gun would come by and shoot wildly.

I may or may not depending on the severity of the fight. If I didn't feel safe to take my children outside, I'd call the police. If they're escalated enough to be throwing punches, that's worthy of a call to the police IMHO. If it was just an argument and not in a threatening tone, I'd probably tell them to settle down!

But he/she is usually driving to fast! I've never seen a fight in-person... I think these just happen because I live in a neighbourhood with LOTS and LOTS of foot traffic! It's pretty busy! And we live on a corner, so the intersection seems to be a good place to stop and talk.  |

I have called once. It was two cars with a man in each. I guess there must have been some kind of road rage but I didn't see that. What I did see was both of them pull into a grassy area on the side of the road, one got out and opened the other's car door and started shoving. I called 911. I told the lady where it was and she said they just received another call. There were a few other cars around so obviously someone got to 911 before I did. I then continued home. I am no match for 2 men fighting so I don't feel like I could have done anything more than that.

I did once on my neighbors. I couldn't see it, but the women was screaming, "leave me alone, leave me alone." They sent an officer right out.

Once I pulled up to the pump at a quick trip in North Kansas City. I heard someone screaming and turned and saw this woman kicking someone on the ground. I thought it was a kid. I screamed at her and went over and broke them up. Turns out, it was one of her co-workers. The aggressor thought that the victim was messing with "her man". I was AMAZED at how many people there were there (at least 30) that just stood and watched. One guy came up to me and said "I thought it was a guy beating up his girlfriend". I was like WTF!! I guess if it's your bf it's ok if he beats you up.
No one called the cops except for the clerk inside the QT.
