My dh has been out on FMLA disability for the past month due to intractable migraine. Dh has underlying problems that have created the perfect storm for horrific headaches that just won't go away.
Today's appointment is the one that we've been looking forward to for a couple of months. The doctor is a neurologist who specialises in headaches and also is a chiropractor.
Dh needs these doctors to confirm the underlying causes of the migraines and get those treated. The disability insurance company also wants objective findings and migraine pain is subjective.
Thankfully Cisco's benefits includes short term disability insurance, so employees will still get a paycheck even when out on FMLA. The insurance company, Sedgwick, has the policy of denying all claims the first time. We've been fighting with the disability insurance company to approve dh's disability absence as well as fighting to get them to pay dh. This is just more frustrating on top of how sick dh has been.
I tried to massage dh's neck last night when his migraine was so horrible. Massaging made my arm muscles hurt severely, but I know how painful those migraines are and how the neck muscle tension makes them worse.
Unfortunately the massaging made my right arm spasm so badly that I was in tears--and I never cry over pain. Dh felt so bad, and he wound up massaging my arm--the muscle was so tight and caused nerve pain all the way into my fingers. I hate that I can't do much to help dh.
We really appreciate all your prayers and kind thoughts. I'm hoping that this specialist can really help dh get some much needed relief.

Good thoughts and prayers for your dh to be able to get the medical help he needs, and for the disability insurance to approve your dh's claim.
I'm sorry you both are going through this.

you have my prayers and hugs. Migrains can put the toughest person down, its not like a pain you can just work through. I am thankful I only get them when I have my cycle but even then its like a living hell. I am so sorry your DH is going through this Im not sure if it would help but I have an electronic neck massager and it does help sometimes. I think it is called a shiatsu

As you know from our conversations, I suffer from Intractable Chronic Migraine. If he has good insurance, might I suggest Michigan Head and Neurological Institute, located in Ann Arbor Michigan? I spent 13 days inpatient there and while they could not break mine, they have worked miracles for so many people. People come from around the world to stay at the facility, Dr. Saper is well-known for his research and treatment. I am sending big prayers for your husband. I truly DO feel his pain. It is no way to live. Hugs to both of you. When is enough enough, right?

I hope they're able to help him. happymomma, how were they able to break yours? Sadly, the weren't able to. I ended up taking a medical retirement after 27 years at my job at the age of 45. I am thankful to be able to draw my pension early, but I would LOVE a true cure. I was diagnosed with Migraine at age 9 and just suffered through it all of my life. They eventually got SO bad though that I was in jeopardy of losing my job for cause. My head would pound so bad that I couldn't even concentrate on my job when I did make it to work. Since I was a Buyer in Materials Mgmt for a hospital, I was dealing with a LOT of money and errors were not a good thing. Many times I would have to leave my desk to go lay on the bathroom floor with my sweatshirt wrapped around my head until I could ramp the pain down a bit. I refuse to take any more 'preventives' because over the past 40+ years I have tried every family of drugs and nothing works and in fact, many of them have horrible side-effects. I am now on Norco 4x a day to manage the pain but am becoming tolerant to that as well. Now that I am retired and since my state recognizes Medical Marijuana, I am looking into getting my MMM card. I am researching strains that are low in THC but high in CBD as I don't like the euphoric feeling. I know it works for me (don't ask me how...) so I just need to get moving on it.

Praying for you and your DH.
As a fellow migraine sufferer of 35 years I know how horrible migraines can be. I know you've probably tried this, but just in case when I get mine I like to use a gel filled ice pack that I got from my local pharmacy. I keep it in the fridge (it's a snake shape-long and lean) and I put it in the back of my neck. I keep two in there, when one gets warm, I pull out the other. It helps just a bit, along with my medications.
I know what you mean about massages. I don't really like to be massaged during a migraine, but I do like DH to press really hard on the back of my neck in one spot.
Whatever works and relieves the pain. I once saw a book at a bookstore for migraines entitled "Migraines, A Guided Tour of Hell" I thought what a perfect title! That author must be a fellow migraine sufferer.
I wish your DH a speedy recovery and for you much peace.
Debbie in MD.

Sending prayers for your DH and for you.
Can you talk with a different person at Sedgwick? We had them when my DH broke his hip. The only issue we had with them was they wanted him to come back to work earlier than the doctor wanted. Once we explained he was not even allowed to climb stairs yet. What was he supposed to do once he was back at work and there was a fire and the elevators didn't work? Were they going to provide someone to sit with him every day in case he needed help getting out of the building? Yep, suddenly no problem!!
Praying for a quick change of heart by Sedgwick. BTW other than that one little episode, they were great with us.
