I think the burnt cat eaten pie is gross. The other stuff doesn't bother me, though. I'm European by ancestry and I think maybe we are just a bit more relaxed. Now, when I'm having company or preparing something for a potluck or a cookie exchange, I always make sure to follow North American standards vs European ones, but for me, I'll pick that cupcake up and eat it, thank you very much!

We were n London and Paris in April. I noticed how food servers were handling food with their bare hands. Then they wash them. Too often in America, I see rubber gloves being used and then the food handler touching something else. Gloves don't magically repel germs! We went to a market in Paris near the Bastille. They had meats on ice, but cured sausages out of refrigeration. We ate it all and didn't get sick. But burned, half eaten by wandering cats? No thank you. Feral cats carry A LOT of nasty germs and diseases. In the UK our stringent food handling laws favour the wash hands and use sanitiser routine after every transaction rather than using gloves that are perhaps worn for several hours.

Is it time to mention the workers wearing aprons, and not removing them when they go into restrooms?

I'm just baffled that you would. "love this dish," consider it "an all time favorite," eat it in many different places for 10 years" knowing that "no one refrigerates it ever and it sits out for weeks and just gets reheated" and that "every single time you eat it you get food poisoning" and you kept eating it!! Who does this? Sounds like suicide by takenoko raisu, I'm surprised you never ended up in the hospital Keep in mind this started when I was 17 and ended when I was about 26 or 27 and didn't put the pieces together until after I had left Japan. It's very hard to refuse food when you are invited to someone's house. But yeah you would have thought I would have learned!

Okay I am very laid back about these sorts of threads, I have a tendancy to eyeroll at how uptight some posters seem to be about germs. However even I wouldn't have gone for a left outside for the trash, burnt and half eaten by cats pie.

I would rather get food from a bare handed person than someone with gloves. Gloves give a false sense of security. And I'm not that bothered by a sandwich that has touched the ground, as long as it wasn't in a bathroom. This is how I feel too

I'm just curious - is this the expectation now? (USA)

I'm just curious - is this the expectation now? (USA) No, not in a regular kitchen, where the expectation is that they are washing their hands properly. But the kitchen staff isn't ringing you out at the register and sweeping with the broom in between each meal prep either. I expect to see people wearing gloves at a place like Jimmy John's, where they are touching every ingredient that goes into my sandwich with their hands. I will say that I've seen them change gloves after every transaction at the deli department at the grocery store, but I guess I'll have to go in and observe the next time I go to Jimmy John's. I know some sandwich places like this do change gloves, particularly if they are making your sandwich and then checking you out at the register. I went to a local place once and the guy sweeping up with the broom and dustpan proceeded to handle food without washing his hands or donning gloves. I never went back.
