I am willing to bet 38,000 us dollars at their income is probably equivalent to the 150 dollars I spent on my daughters. Now if you took someone who has a salary about 75,000 a year and they throw a party of that caliber I would seriously be shocked.

I'm just finding the Aussie name for cotton candy, "fairy floss" to be inexplicably charming. This reminds me... Would it be too over the top to break out the commercial cotton candy machine that I own for DD's party? Yes, I have one! DH bought it for me as a present years ago from someone that was closing their concession business. I don't use it all that often because it's a mess to clean, but this might be a good excuse! Not over the top. Just awesome! It's something you already have.

What 3 year old doesn't want a party with expensive booze? Seems totally reasonable.

Just in case anyone else is curious that is $38K USD. so not as bad at $50K They own a "riverfront reception center" So think they wrote it off as a business expense? I was wondering if the 50,000 was retail cost and perhaps given their business were able to cut deals with the vendors and/ or employed some of the vendors via their business, bringing the actual costs down.

If you own a personal "fairy floss " machine you can use it whenever you want! Ha, but you'll be asked to use it at PTA events from now to eternity- use caution The thing is big and it's seriously a PITA to clean which is why I rarely bring it out. We usually try to do it outside because it makes a sticky mess on the floor or ground around it too. And yeah, that thought about being harassed by the PTA has crossed my mind! We could always tell people we rented it... just say you borrowed it from a friend. that way you didn't go out of your way and spend money to rent it, but it's not yours so you can't be expected to bring it to school events.

LOL) We also have a giant gumball machine (compliments of one of my husbands tenants who didn't feel like moving it) and a popcorn cart (we bought to use for school and church events to make it fancier LOL). I LOVE it! We just made cotton candy for the entire 4th and 6th grade at my kid's school. The kids were THRILLED and the teachers were excited, too. It was worth the hassle. We do loan our stuff out a lot to churches so their youth events can have an extra edge of cool.

Way over what I could afford for a party but it sounds like the birthday is an excuse for a large family party. I would do the same for my family if I could and they can well afford it. I say more power to them! As someone who routinely gets together with her family-a whole lot of them at one time-I got the feeling that the birthday was the excuse to have a family party for all. I would do it for my family if I the means. Although-cognac might be a little ... sophisticated ... for some of my family so I could probably save a little there-most would be pretty happy with Bud in can. And I am guessing the menu would need a little tweaking for my more redneck brethren, but we would have a fabulous time.

I wonder what they'll do for her sweet 16? Yeah, they don't really do sweet 16 in straya. It's usually just 18 or 21 or both. Get what you're saying though. It boggles my mind just wondering what her next birthdays would be like, and her wedding!

It cost a fortune to fill the huge gumball machine with gumballs and then it would take so long to work through them that the ones in there longest would get rock hard and stick together. I wouldn't let DH get rid of the cotton candy uh, FAIRY FLOSS machine though. It holds a special place in my heart. Can you believe that we haven't used it once since DD (5) was born? She doesn't even know we have it. I think she would freak out to have Fairy Floss at her party!

Ha ha! Maybe, if none of them are junior Peas. If they were, they wouldn't eat it because it would be too full of germs! Don't kid yourself....one of the mommies there will be judging your fairy floss as she gives little Johnny his Kale chips to snack on instead of birthday cake! LOL. Nah, not with this group. Even the ultra fit runner mom lets her kid have storebought cake with gobs of sugary frosting on it. It is a birthday party after all. She'll no doubt have a piece of the cake herself because she knows it will be 1) made from scratch with fresh eggs our hens laid and 2) it will be delicious! Last year's three layer white cake with chocolate ganache filling ended up being about 10" tall because the layers rose so high in the oven. It was pretty funny watching people's eyes pop out of their heads when we pulled that baby out of the fridge!

I love throwing parties!!! If we had more expendable income than we do, I'd definitely do way more for our little parties. I don't think I could ever spend quite *that* much money on one birthday party, but who knows -- that much money must feel like pocket change at some point, if your income/savings are high enough.
I think there was a line in Mrs. Dalloway about how her parties are like offerings. I like to think of it when I'm putting a party together, it's an offering to those that I love and care about. (And some people just have more to offer from!!)

Why should we care? It's no different than the kid birthday parties Tori Spelling and Kim Kardashian threw which had lots of adults at.

Maybe Mr. Right from the Canadian Craigslist should go to that party. I bet he could find a "suitable" woman for himself.

I'm just finding the Aussie name for cotton candy, "fairy floss" to be inexplicably charming. My husband is Strayan. Those Strayans have crazy names for everything. Dagwood dog. Pluto pups. Icy poles. Hilarious! Icy poles yes of course, but I have no idea what a Dagwood Dog or a Pluto Pup is!!

Oh yeah, you HAVE to do it! I would SO love to have a fairy floss machine at a party, I love that stuff. DD had a joint 16th birthday party with a friend of hers and we hired a slushy machine - it was a huge hit! And we kept a very close eye on it to make sure no-one put any vodka in the machine when we weren't looking!

And we kept a very close eye on it to make sure no-one put any vodka in the machine when we weren't looking! LOL. The slushy machine sounds like fun. We had a coffee shop at one point, and when we sold that I made DH keep the commercial blender for making smoothies/slushies. Totally forgot about that because I don't keep most appliances out on the counter. Okay, so I mentioned it to DH about the fairy floss machine thinking he would probably shut down the idea due to the mess factor (and the fact that he would have to make the fairy floss but I would get stuck cleaning the machine) and he wondered aloud if we still have some sugar for it (we do from when my brother borrowed it for his workplace last year). Then he said, "They probably sell it at the rental place. I was going to stop there today to see if we can still rent a bouncy castle for the party." So clearly I'm not the only one in this family who likes to go a little overboard with the kid's birthday! (And I'm so TOTALLY going to go in the bouncy thing if we get can get one!) At least now that she's five, there's a good chance that she'll have actual memories of this party--especially if I ever get the photos printed and scrapped!

What a gorgeous little girl though!
