I'm going to Cuba early next year, flying in and out of Miami. I've only been to the Orlando area, and the central Florida beaches, oh and taken a Disney Cruise out of Port Canaveral eons ago. It's a long haul from Seattle, so I'm considering adding on several days and spending time either in Miami or the Keys. I've done no research on this, it just popped into my mind right now as I was looking at flights.
I'll be be traveling alone. I'm not a lay out on the beach kind of girl, but the keys are kind of calling to me. Love photography, nature, architecture. If you've been to either the Keys, Miami, or both, what did you love about them?

I don't know about the Keys, but I have been to Miami several times - the Cuban influence is really strong there. Since you are already going to Cuba, I would probably suggest the Keys.

I was born and raised in the Keys. I'd be happy to PM with you about specifics if you'd like. I'm from Marathon, the "heart of the Florida Keys" and much prefer the quieter islands to Key West. Do you have any preferences for activities? What type of hotel do you prefer? Send me a PM and I'd be happy to share some of my favorites. Happy travels! By the way, I'm a bit envious of your trip to Cuba. I'm Cuban and would love to visit one day.

We spent a week in Miami last year and made a day to go to the Keys. I cannot express how beautiful the Keys were. Miami is amazing but miami beach is soooooooo busy. The Keys were very relaxed. I would go for the Keys!

The Keys... I love Miami but the Keys are really chill and interesting. There is a lot to do that is not lying on the beach.

Miami beach is CRAZY but it's a great spot to walk around and see the shops etc. I am hoping to get to the Keys this summer as my niece lives in Ft. Lauderdale and has been there a couple times.
I thought travel was still restricted to Cuba?? Or do you meet the exclusions in order to go?

When we visited the Keys, I did not know about Dry Tortugas national park and wish we had gone. It is 70 miles from Key West. We did find the Everglades national park and Biscayne national park. Great places for photograhy.

Thanks for your input! I'll look into the Keys more. Madi & Me I'd love to pick your brain about the Keys once I have a better idea of how I'd like to spend my time, thanks!
Christine, I'm going to Cuba with a small group, it's a People to People type of program. It's been on my short list for a while now. Since restrictions are easing, I figured I'd better get myself there soon,....before there's a Starbucks and McDs on every corner!

If you like photography don't miss the Art Deco area in South Beach. I flew into Miami a couple of days before I took a cruise and stayed in an Art Deco Hotel across from the beach. I also took a city tour, which included a cruise on the bay, and a tour to the Everglades and rode on an airboat which is something I always wanted to do.
I also went to Key West for the day. Again took a city tour and then walked around on my own.
The way I looked at it was if I never went back to Miami/Key West what did I really want to see in my time there. In the few days I was there I managed to check off three items on my travel bucket list. Visiting the Art Deco area of Miami, ride an airboat, and visit Key West.

Well, I gotta tell you, I am very jealous! My dream trip on my short-list, too.
You will see lots of architecture, modern, classic, everything, in Miami. Lots of art, food, you name it. It is a busy city though, with a quicker pace. The keys are gorgeous, but almost opposite. Calm, peaceful, lots of flora, and such.
One caveat, Key West (which is at the end of the Keys) is a loooong drive from Miami. Just in case you are pressed for time.
