The sad facts of life are that I am getting older. Well, that isn't sad really, but what is kind of sad is that my skin looks so boringly blah. I am not much for regimented skin care routines, but it occurred to me that I probably need to start exfoliating.
I was thinking of making some homemade, but am having trouble figuring out what to do. I see a lot of 'anti-aging' but that boat has sailed, and I need something for the 'aging' skin-you know, the not so firm, not so dewy, not so ... you know.
Any homemade recipes you have tried? Or can recommend?

I don't make my own, I use Clinique's 7 Day Scrub cream in the shower every morning. I have for years. I don't have but few wrinkles under my eyes. Although I like using the cream I also think genetics plays a part in my skin.

Exfoliating is great for mature skin as the process of shedding dead skin slows down as we age leaving it looking dull and flat. Oatmeal is good, as is honey, sugar, avocado.....it all depends on your skin type. Don't overdo it though - depending on your skin type once or wtice a week will be enough and be gentle - you're not aiming to get down to the bone! Google or Pinterest will give you plenty of suggestions

I'm another who likes Clinique's 7th Day Scrub. Just wish I could forego going through puberty bumps...again.

Try retinol cream. There are some inexpensive kinds out there, like Neutrogena. You will need to use SPF in the day if you use it, though. It's not homemade, but it is pretty cheap.

I like Clinique 7 Day Scrub, too, but not every day. However, DD scolded me and said it's too harsh at my age and she took it away from me. We bought something similar in the organics section of my supermarket which she claims is gentler. I can't tell the difference. She isn't a professional, just a hobbyist, but she sure is opinionated.

I don't have any advice on homemade scrubs, but if you decide to purchase something Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub is gentle and doesn't irritate my sensitive skin. I think I usually pay around $8.00 for a tube.

My skin looks so much better since I started using one of the exfoliating brushes. I use the Oil of Olay one and love it!

I am fairly broke (okay, really broke) and don't have the money right now to buy anything. I hoping to try to find something that I can make at home.

High tech and expensive - Clarisonic
Low tech and cheap - an old washcloth, small circular light motions will dry brush your face, remove dead skin and improve circulation.

PLEASE be careful not to buy exfoliating products with microbeads. They are horrible for the environment and causing huge problems in sewage systems, I believe. Please google the issue ... I don't remember details. I didn't pay close attention to the brands because I don't use those creams.
I did just read today that Crest toothpaste contains microbeads, Colgate Total does not. We're a Colgate Total family!

I can answer this! My favorite exfoliating scrub is baking soda. I rub it on my face every morning in a circular manner and then wash it off with a mild facial soap. It brightens and softens skin.
Once a week I mix some sugar with olive oil into a paste and rub that around on my face. I wash it off with soap and water.

When I worked with a dermatologist, I saw too may broken veins and damaged skins generally to risk making my own exfoliants. I really like alpha h liquid gold ( glycolic acid) used twice a week: dermalogica cream exfoliant and elemis papaya enzyme peel. Ig gothrough phases of each and they all have their advantages, but the liquid gold has made more difference to my skin than any of the other things I have tried.

Alba Botanicals brand papaya enzyme facial mask. I've got mild rosacea and it's the only exfoliating product/method that doesn't cause it to flare up. I use it once a week and then skip my anti-aging serum that night (but use the moisturizer).

Micro bead or textured 'scrub' type exfoliants are not the friends of mature aged skin, they are far too harsh. It's best to use the liquid exfoliants of which there are many options. I use Alpha H but I've also used Paula's Choice in the past with good results, and they are very reasonably priced.

They even sell baking soda in a plastic container now. I used to buy the boxes and pour it into my own container. Now I just use the plastic bottle it comes in. I sprinkle a tiny amount into my hand, squirt some liquid soap (I use Cetaphil) on it and rub very gently. I love that's it's so cheap and I think it really helps!

I have been dry brushing both my face and body for the last year or so.
Of course they are two different brushes, one for face, one for body.
I am mid to late forties...
My skin looks great for my age but I know that genetics play a big part in that...
No smoking, alcohol, coffee, or long term sun exposure may also play a part.
