Dd will be a freshman in high school this year. She would like me to just give her money for back-to-school shopping and let her go wild. I think it's a great idea and will be a good lesson in budgeting for her. My problem is that I'm trying to decide how much is reasonable to give her. Just curious to see what the norm is for others to help give me a better idea.

My dd has to wear uniforms. All she is getting is 3 pairs of shorts and 3 pairs of pants. She already has the shirts.

I just took dd#1, age 15, summer shopping and it was close to $300 ... ouch (Yup, summer has just started here in Canada) The thing that set us back the most was the $45 bra but she really needed a decent one ... I'm thinking I'll be spending at least as much for back-to-school ... sigh!

I think it depends on what she needs.
Just clothes? Shoes?
A backpack?
Are you including school supplies in the budget?
Sit down with her and make a list together. Ask her how much she thinks she'll need for what's on her list. Then balance that with what's in your budget and come up with a number.
Help her by giving her coupons for stores she might shop at or encourage her to sign up for store emails to see of she can get coupons on her phone.

We don't do a full on back to school shop. Dd will get 1-2 new outfits and then wait and see what she needs as the year progresses. We are still in summer clothes when school starts. I would give her around $200 for something like that.

Since it is so dang hot here when school starts back. I probably only spend about $150-$200 on 14yo dd. She has plenty of bras, socks, panties and such. We will mostly concentrate on capris, tops and shoes.
ETA: This is just clothing for us. I have already dropped about $200 on art supplies and she will not get her supply list till school starts.

I'm inclined to say $200 or so, with the possibility of a little more after school starts. That's assuming you're dealing with an overall budget that can handle that amount, of course.

Five polo shirts, 3 shorts, 3 pants, and then sweaters/jackets. I don't think I would want it any other way. Lesa

For clothes shopping I gave dd $200. I explained that was her limit and she took it upon herself to track her money using her iPhone calculator. I was very impressed at her shopping logic.

I don't buy them new clothes until they go on sale in Oct. In our area, it can still be warm until mid Oct. I did give them money for their summer birthdays so they could buy summer clothes on sale in June to wear the beginning of the school year. Well, they can buy what they want, but I suggested getting nice summer clothes at half price that they could wear the first few weeks of school instead of paying full price for a fall outfit that they will sweat in the first few weeks of school.
I don't know what the other teen boys and girls do, but I would bet they wear their "old" summer clothes being that it's still warm. But of course my daughters like to tell me that all the other boys and girls have all new clothes!

We also have uniforms, and they do not change from year to year. This means that our back to school shopping is very minimal, and depends on the amount of growth of the child. Since my oldest just graduated, all his shirts will be fine for the youngest and we only need a new pair of shorts and probably new shoes. No new backpacks needed, and at his age school supplies are very minimal as well (the school gives all the kids ipads, so most of their work is submitted via the ipad.) It sure does get easier when they get older. ETA: We don't have to buy pants as it is rarely cold enough for them, and when they do, they are allowed to wear jeans. My son has a sweater he wears when it is cold that has been approved and that is pretty much all we ever need.

Are we talking clothes, supplies, or both?? Clothes. It will include socks and undies, jeans, shirts, and shoes. She doesn't need tennis shoes this year, she just wants a pair of flats or two. She's hoping to shop at thrift stores to get all her basics (except undies!) so that she has some left over for accessories and other extras.

I just took my 13yo dd school shopping today and we spent $140 on 4 pairs of jeans alone . So my vote is between $250- 300.

I just have a 16 yo ds still in school. He would die if I took him back to school shopping. I'll get some new t shirts for hi to start but he'll be in shorts the first 6-8 weeks. Then we'll go through what he has and get what he needs. I tend to shop sales so he always has socks and boxers. I just got a smokin' deal on a pair of Sperry topsiders so he 's set for shoes. Got a new LL Bean backpack last year. That'll last for the rest of HS.
I find he's so much easier than my daughter was. Jeans, tshirts and sweatshirt when it's cold.

I fund all the clothes for my two Grandchildren, DGD 14 and DGS 15. They are limited to $400.00 for back to school clothes and about $100.00 for supplies. The limits were set by their parents. But since DGD now needs bras and they are expensive, I am not going to count those in her $400.00 limit.
We also do another round of $400.00 shopping when cold weather hits and again in Spring. Anything they need in between is purchased by their parents. Shopping with them is sometimes difficult as DGS is very picky.

I would make sure she has a plan and buys some good basic items like a jacket and a pair of boots. Keep in mind that if she will be at a new school, there may be style trends that are new to her. She might want to save a little until after she's been at school a couple of weeks. Her money will go further too at the sales.

My daughter going into 6th grade will get $200 for clothes automatically, but she also has the chance to earn extra money at $5 per hour for babysitting her brother. So far she has earned an extra $35 I think.

When my kids were in school, I started a 'no pants shopping until cold weather' rule when they'd grow out of what was bought before they really got to wear 'em. DD2 grew until her senior year! I also never included bras and undies in their total. I'm sad they are older but I am glad that part of grown up is done!! (I absolutely HATE clothes shopping).

$200 was the figure that first came to mind before I read everyone else's responses. Depending on the child, I think it can be a great exercising getting most for your money. My oldest is 18 and although she does like to splurge occasionally, she still gets a thrill by thrift shopping and getting things on clearance.

Shoes are expensive, so including shoes, probably $400. My son likes Polo brand, but rather than but it at Macy's, we go to Sear's and it's about half the price.

We just have one teen still at home. We don't give her a set amount because we kind of spread out our shopping. She wore a hole in her shoes so she just got a new pair of Vans that will probably last until Christmas. We always keep her stocked in undies and bras and we take her to get a jacket in fall/winter when they go on sale. We probably let her spend about $200. in the course of a week of various shopping before school. Though I remember my dad giving me that same amount back in 1980

Good to know that I was in the ballpark. After seeing what she needed, my first thought was $225, not including school supplies. I think that's what we'll stick with. I'm so interested to see how it goes for her! I'm sure she will be much more picky about what she spends on things knowing that what she has in her hands is IT. Thanks for the input, everyone! I loved hearing how you all do it and reading your suggestions. This is my oldest kid, so it's new territory for me.

Unless a kid has totally outgrown all their current clothes, I don't think it's necessary to buy a whole new wardrobe, simply because school is starting. I think adding a few items, to one's current wardrobe, is sufficient.
For now, I would give $100 for Clothes, $50 for shoes, $25 for cosmetics and accessories. So $175 total. I would pay for school supplies separate. I would pay for undergarments separate.
I would probably give another $50-$100 in October, to add a couple warmer items(hoodie, sweater, etc..)
I wouldn't give cash. I would transfer/deposit the money in her bank account and have her use her debit card. I would also encourage her to sign up for the mailing list at her favorite stores, as they might email or text her money saving coupons.

$150-$200 and that leaves you open to adding something later if you need.
When I was a kid, my mom used to take my brother and I and we would do this huge trip (or split it into two). I don't do that with my kids. If I bought them pants in August when they go back to school, they would be too short in October when they needed to start wearing them.

I said $301-350 because you figure shoes for school, shoes for p.e., a messenger bag/backpack, school supplies, and clothes.
