As you are shopping don't forget to download the retailmenot.com app. It lights up with ALL the coupons as you enter the shopping venue!
You can also print coupons too, from that site.

The answers you are going to get here are going to vary widely by what is needed and what each family can afford. I would just sit down and figure out how much you would normally spend on her back to school things and make that the amount you give her. I plan on doing this with DD when she gets to high school too. I think it's a great lesson for kids.

I have to lump in the sports stuff too. It was over $250 to outfit my DD for volleyball her freshman year by the time we bought shoes ($80-$100), game socks ($18-20/pair), ankle supports ($60/pair), microscopic volleyball shorts (2 for games, 2 for practice $20/pair) and two sets of knee pads($30/pair). The following years weren't as expensive, although she needed at least one new pair of shoes each season, but we rotated the game shorts to practice.
We never really go out and buy a huge back to school wardrobe. It is so hot when school starts in August and the school has no a/c. They kind of pick up what they need as they go.

If I turned her loose to do it on her own- I guess 200-250. But at this point (she's 14) - I'm not doing it. Her idea of wise clothing choices and mine are too far apart. She probably makes out better shopping with me anyway, because I'm likely to go over my expected amount. And because I know about coupons and codes and sales.
She buys some clothes on her own throughout the year with birthday/holiday money and she's learning how to maximize it with coupons and codes. With bigger purchases like back to school clothes- I'm not willing to turn her loose. Yet.

I fund all the clothes for my two Grandchildren, DGD 14 and DGS 15. They are limited to $400.00 for back to school clothes and about $100.00 for supplies. The limits were set by their parents. But since DGD now needs bras and they are expensive, I am not going to count those in her $400.00 limit. We also do another round of $400.00 shopping when cold weather hits and again in Spring. Anything they need in between is purchased by their parents. Shopping with them is sometimes difficult as DGS is very picky. That's so nice of you! I bet the kids appreciate it! I love the ideas I have read on this thread about giving kids a set amount and they have to stick to the budget. That way my kids are free to spend a lot of money on something from VS, but they won't have much left. It will really teach them spending skills. My 16 yr. old is very budget conscience, I wish she would teach her younger sister! My kids all do dance, soccer, and the oldest does track. We have to have a sportswear budget as well. They always need new shoes, shin guards, etc. And "fancy" socks are really trendy with the boys and girls at our high school. I tease my daughter that she looks like my grandfather with her calf high black socks. I don't even want to think about how much we have to spend on school supplies! With two in high school, it is so much. We got off easy not having to buy anything in 1st-4th, and now we spend so much!

Mine is a freshman as well. She's always worn uniforms and those are gone this year so she needs a lot of clothes...ugh.
I would say your dd will need at least $200-$300. There are stores here where you can get some cheaper things (Charlotte Russe, F21, Papaya, H&M), but other stores are a little pricier. If she needs shoes I'd up that amount a little.

This is so interesting for me to think about because I have 2 boys who have zero interest in shopping for clothes.
I would first, give a $150 limit to see that they were using coupons and shopping sales. I'd also like to see them buy clothes for the season that the clothes were needed, while they could live in shorts all the time they need pants for the brutal winters here. Then I'd give another $150 once I knew they understood that. The purchases probably would include: shoes, pants, shirts, and some hoodies.

I'm sure your dd will have fun shopping! When I'm getting ready to take my kids clothes shopping, I always like to take a quick inventory of their closets and see what they have. have them try on jeans to see if they still fit, toss outgrown clothes, etc. I've written down notes of things they need. Sometimes when you're out shopping you get distracted by the cute stuff and forget about some necesseties.
I don't buy hardly anything for back to school. My kids are on a year round schedule in So Cal. It will be hot still through Oct/Nov. We get one or two pairs of shoes now and that's it.

With my daughters, it depends on the day. Sometimes they want to shop, other times they don't. But they hate trying on clothes. We had a big community day yesterday. Lots of high school kids there, and the boys are quite stylish. My daughter says the boys at her school must spend at least the same amount on clothes as the girls (maybe more!). I am just glad my daughters advanced from wearing aeropastle t-shirts and jeans to the school dances in 7th-8th grade to nice outfits for the dances in high school!

I have a kid who is a clotheshorse. That kid (boy) shops more than any teen girl I have ever seen. He is very style conscious and fortunately has a job to pay for his habit. In my world, shopping is definitely not limited to just girls. This kid of mine could give anyone a run for their money. Literally.

I guess I am cheap. Last year I gave each of my daughters $100 for clothes for back to school. And set the rules that it had to included 2 pairs of pants or jeans and at least 3 shirts. Figuring that meant they could spend $20 on each item or splurge and make it up on something else. I was tired of buying and returning stuff or hearing them whine when I said let's go shopping.
It was WONDERFUL!!!!! They were thrilled! And I was happy I didn't have to ever be the meanie and say no. They budgeted really well, thought about what they really wanted the most, shopped the discount stores and ended up getting some real deals/sales.
Now that didn't include any actual supplies like books, backpack, undies, shoes etc. It was just for new clothes for the first few days of school.
I don't believe in buying them a whole wardrobe of stuff at the start of school. Just a few pieces to freshened their wardrobe. BUT I buy them stuff all year.

It would depend on what all she needed. Are we talking shoes? Undies and bras? Fancy butt jeans? PE clothes and shoes? School supplies?
We try to shop throughout the year so we don't have to buy so much at once. We were out of state earlier this summer and my daughter got quite a bit of stuff that she can use for school clothes.
