We are really considering taking our 3 and 5 year to a concert this summer, late August. Dh and I would love to go and our boys LOVE music so I'm thinking they will like it. Guess I won't know unless we try, right?!
The only thing that makes me slightly hesitant in ordering tickets is that it will be outside (with no shade or covering at all, until the sun starts going down) and it will be HOT.. Like 100 degrees hot. We don't live where it gets that warm (maybe gets to 70 a few days in the summer) so I'm not sure if the heat will bother them or not.
We'd purchase lawn seats and pack a blanket/low chairs to sit on.
Thanks

What concert are you planning to take them to?
My youngest DD was about six when she went to her first concert. We saw Kelly Clarkson. Even with ear plugs she complained that it was too loud.

My kids were 11 and 8 and it was last year to see Bruno Mars.
One thing I didn't consider was the smoking since it was an outdoor concert. And, it wasn't just cigarette smoking either.........

We've been taking C to Oregon Zoo concerts since he was about 1 1/2. We took him to his first indoor concert when he was about 3.
He loves music and has always enjoyed going to shows.

I wouldn't have a problem taking a 3 and 5yo to a concert, but not in the conditions you described. 100 degrees with no shade is not good for young kids. How long would you be out in the sun until it went down?

My oldest DD was 4 when we took her to her first STYX show. We had front row seats and we brought her in for the second half of the show. We had ear plugs for her and I held her on my hip the entire time so she could see. She got got to strum Tommy Shaw's guitar at the end of 'Renegade' All concerts are downhill from there! LOL
My younger DD was six. She had just as much fun. Again front row seats, ear protection.
Love going to concerts with my kids. Now they are 12 and 10. There are a few opportunities to point out how not to behave/ dress, etc. LOL

I took DD to see Hanson and Michelle Branch when she was 5 and she was totally their demo at the time, heh. It was indoors, though, so no smoking or heat and earplugs were helpful. It was an early tour, before they both blew up, and she knew them because her budding A&R skills resulting in her picking MMMBop as a hit before it ever hit the airwaves. (We subscribed to a music service that released compilation tracks from different labels and she zeroed in on that as her favorite song pretty quickly.)

Dd was seven and DS was six. They both saw George Strait in concert. DS actually fell asleep toward the end but woke up in time to hear the encore. They both loved it.

I took my kids to see Dan Zanes a few times when they were little.
My oldest went to her first "adult" concert last year, at 11 (Pentatonix).

Youngest was 4 and she gave up trick or treating (her choice) to see the Backstreet Boys. She became a concert junkie and lives for concerts. My older son and daughter attend an outdoor Disney Symphony concert when they were 2 and 4. It was summer but it didn't start until evening so we missed most of the heat.

No indoor concerts yet at seven.
Outdoor concerts since they were two or three. They've always been festival-type concerts where we can bring chairs/blankets/umbrellas/wagons.

My daughter just went to see Walk Off The Earth, who are her favourite band ever. She is 7 and my husband went with her. They venue they played had a few reserved seats so I let her go. I wouldn't have let her with general admission as it would be hard to see or she would get trampled. I think taking them to a concert is fine as long as the band and their fans are appropriate. I don't think that I would be that interested with the conditions you described- but I don't think I would want to go either! I'm getting old and crotchety and like reserved seats and air conditioning and reasonable volumes

It would be the heat that would concern me, otherwise no problem. Outside concerts are pretty relaxed and easier with children imo but no shade in those temps for several hours......I'd be wary.

We took my son to see Weird Al when he was in grade school, but it was indoors. We had very close up seats so it was pretty loud. I wouldn't worry so much about the age itself, but I would really hesitate to keep them out in those temps with no shelter, especially since they are not acclimated to that kind of weather. Heck, I, as an adult, couldn't stand that.

The outdoor concert would be fun but not in that heat, especially since you are not acclimated to it.

Well, define "concert". lol. My kids have gone to local concerts since they were babies -- things like the Memorial Day concert at the Capitol or 4th of July concerts (both downtown and locally). We've taken them to Wolf Trap which is an outdoor venue with covered and lawn seating. We always go to the lawn seating and bring a picnic. Etc.
But for an actual inside-an-arena concert I think dd's first was Amy Grant, when she was about 8 or so. Her first all on her own (with friends) was Taylor Swift, when she was in middle school. One of the parents drove them all down to the arena and then waited at a bar/coffee shop next door with all the other parents of younger kids. lol (now they just take the Metro down).

We took DD (now 14) to see a Beatles tribute concert when she was around 7. It was at an indoor/outdoor venue, and we had indoor seats. It was loud, but she loved it. She also got her first whiff of weed there. Didn't love that so much. LOL! First indoor concert was at 11 when DH (SUCH a good daddy!) took her to see Taylor Swift as an elementary school "graduation" gift. DH doesn't go to concerts unless he has ridiculously good (read: expensive) seats, so I passed on that one. DD was enthralled, especially when she got a hug from Taylor's mom. Other concerts she's been to since include Matthew Morrison, The Eagles, Billy Joel, and Paul McCartney. We're also going to see Jackson Browne later this summer (at a small venue - I can't wait for that one!). Looking at that list, I think we've done something right by her musical education. To your original question, though, I wouldn't necessarily have a problem taking kids that age to a concert if it was something they'd sit through. But in those conditions - sun, heat, etc. - I might think twice. I don't think *I* would be able to take it, and small children might have an even worse time of it.

Going to concerts is one of my favorite things to do with my kids. I think you should go and enjoy! Start them young! Last year my daughters and I went to see Arctic Monkeys, the Head and the Heart, Panic! at the Disco, Walk the Moon, Linkin Park, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Fitz & the Tantrums, Alt-J, and Cage the Elephant. Plus a few more lol. Yes we have a bit of an obsession with live music.

I grew up going to weekend long outdoor music festivals and concerts where it was common to be on a picnic blanket all day...in Florida, in the summertime...but then again, I grew up doing it. You know?
Some of my most happiest memories from my childhood are laying on the blanket by my mom, all hot and sweaty and falling asleep for an afternoon nap listening to whatever music was on tap that day.
If you are allowed to bring a cooler with lots of water (and ancillary to that, easy access to bathrooms) then I say go for it! You could always bring those chairs that have the shade thing built in.

My kids were going to concerts from the time they were itty babies. Their dad is a professional musician.
But, it was in climates they were accustomed to being in. If you take the boys get them some ear protection, sunscreen, and be sure to take along plenty of cold drinks for them. If the venue doesn't allow small coolers I wouldn't take the kids to a concert in the heat that young.
Around here, if it is in the 90-100 at sundown it will stay that hot until after midnight. Just because the sun goes down doesn't mean it will cool off substantially. Some place near a beach might cool off faster.

I love the heat, but hate sitting in the sun, so I'd be the one whining not my kids. How long would you be out in the sun?
If you can bring lots of water and a couple of mister/fans I would go for it.

We have been to an outdoor Christian music festival in July several times. It' sounds similar to yours. We take a blanket, a sportbrella for shade, and tons of water bottles- a bunch of them are frozen and the kids like to put them on their faces to cool down. They're all sunscreened up. We have a blast. We have been once when it was really hot and we stayed until we were all miserable then left. We've seen TobyMac 3 times and loved him!

Thanks for your feedback, everyone! I appreciate it!
It's starts at 6pm, but we'd probably get there closer to 5:30, if we decide to go. It will probably be 3 hours long. Thankfully, it's a fairgrounds so there is places indoors to help cool off and also real bathrooms(!), which is a huge plus. If it got too bad, we would just leave and go to the hotel. We've gone camping in that kind of heat before, but never been stationary in it.
I need to call the venue and make sure it's ok to bring certain things, like a cooler, ect. If not, we just won't be able to go.
SallyPA - That sun shade is very cool. Just not sure it would be allowed. I would love to see TobyMac. I told my Dh that TMac is 50 and he could be retiring soon. We better go while we still have the opportunity!

We took the kids to a local concert when they were 8 and 11. They went to Jimmy Buffet last year. I'd personally rather go without the.
Dh and I will go to Tim McGraw without them, but will take them to Brad Paisley.
I would not be happy in your conditions and if you arrive later, is there a guarantee as to where you sit or is there open seating?
Could you go without them? Make it a date?
