DD considered going to go to school there but she got much better scholarship elsewhere ( different urban area but similar issues there too )
I haven't been in months but I thought Baltimore was lovely, and I'm not just talking about the harbor. The people were fantastically helpful, and kind. There are many neighborhoods each with their own feel and flare. As with everywhere it does have its problems, but I felt comfortable there. But I'm the sort of person who will stop to talk to people, and enjoy what they have to say.
There was one elderly man in a henschel hat on the corner started talking to me I stopped and had a conversation, his name is Al and he sits there nearly everyday. He knows everything. He usually had 2 buddies who sit with him, but they were visiting family. He remembered DD and I from our first visit in the winter before and he was making sure we knew where we were going. Gave us advice on where not to go, and when. Super nice guy.
DH thought I was insane. He's the kind that walks to his destination as fast as he can, with blinders on and his ears closed. He thought Baltimore was awful, very sketchy, etc.he did not approve of that school at all ( though the school DD is actually going to is in a very similar neighborhood. Go figure )
Have your son learn the area, take reasonable safety precautions and find the people in the community who are kind and friendly and be kind and friendly back. There is a great heart in the community there if you want to see it. But that's usually the case in most places isn't it?

We have always lived in the suburbs since having kids.

My SIL and her husband lived in Baltimore for 6-7 years, in Butchers Hill. We lived in NJ at the time and went to visit them a few times a year. They loved living there and we really enjoyed visiting the city and area when we went.
I also have a good friend who went to Johns Hopkins for his PhD. He enjoyed his time there as well. (Although it was a while ago, he might be interested/able to talk to you son, if he's interested. PM me if you'd like me to set something up.)
Just like with any urban university setting, you son just has to be smart. As hop2 said, Baltimore has a great community, but there are also less savory parts as well. Just like any other city. But congrats to him... it's a fantastic school!

My former car pooler finished his second year at Hopkins- loves it. He's already had great opportunities for an internship and travel.
The school kept in close contact with parents during recent unrest, and sent safety updates on a regular basis prior.
I had doubted he could separate and live so far away. Peas would have said his mother, my friend, was a helicopter, and I would have agreed. He has proved me very wrong! She said the achool had a good orientation for freshmen and info for parents. As a student this kid has become active in a group associated with his major, and found a service club that matches his interests.
ETA friend said aome of the schools text updates last month were scary, but were informative. She felt the school was working hard to keep students protected.

Thanks for sharing the info about your former car pooler : ) We received a letter from the school, about the situation in Baltimore.

I used to live there and My brother and niece still live in Baltimore. Like any huge city, it depends where you go and what you are doing. Baltimore is a nice city overall and Johns Hopkins is a huge university with a world renowned medical center. I'm sure he will enjoy the experience and come to love Baltimore.
