I don't understand why it is such a hassle to empty the dishwasher. My kids, who are all now young adults, still fight over it. I came home the other day and my oldest son had put away the plates but left all the silverware and glasses. ?? WTH? How is exactly is that helpful? We have equal problems with the garbage and my dh is no better in either of these areas.

That's funny. I don't mind it too much - there's worse chores....like actually washing up yourself without a dishwasher!

I always hated it too, until i timed it and realized how little time it actually takes. Convincing DDs of that is another story though!

I hate this chore. I'll do laundry, dishes, but I dread unloading the dishwasher.

It takes less than 3 minutes to unload the dishwasher. Found that one out because I was heating something up in the microwave. Turned the microwave on and then unloaded the dishwasher and still had time left over.
I will never procrastinate that one again. LOL!

Isn't this why we have kids.......to do stuff we hate? I have no kids at home unless you count DH sometimes. . He empties ours most of the time.

My girls fought like cats and dogs for years about anything and everything but strangely they like to do the opposite chores. Although they both dislike vacuuming. Now the younger one will do everything kitchen related if the older one does the bathroom and other odd jobs on my list. I'm a happy mama.

I also hate emptying the dishwasher. It has become a chore for the kids. DS decided to show me how he couldn't do it by breaking a fiestaware bowl as I am telling him to be careful. He has earned himself the honor of doing ALL the dishes now (I did the pots and pans previously). How else can you learn to handle dishes carefully? And I feel free!!

Haha! My kids have to do half and half now- one empties top and one empties bottom and alternate. So, it's less fighting as long as they remember who empties what or then they fight about that lol. Apparently the top is preferred because of all that pesky silverware.

Remind them that it's better than washing up and drying by hand! Yes! Way better. I found that out when my dishwasher broke and it took the repair place *forever* to get the parts. I did dishes by hand for over 2 months. If it hadn't been under warranty I would have yanked that thing out and gotten a new one the next day. I think I hate doing dishes by hand because I grew up in a household without one. There were three of us girls and mom made us rotate - one washed, one dried and also put the dishes away. The third girl did the ironing. I still hate unloading the dishwasher, but now I "reward" myself for emptying the top and then again when I get the bottom done. My preferred reward is a dark chocolate Nonpareil. It also helps to have a nice dishwasher. This one is MUCH easier than my old piece of junk Frigidaire. The door would fall so far open it hit the top of my foot. Hated that thing with a passion. LOL

My kids are the opposite, they fight over who has to do the top! We don't mind the plates and utensils in the bottom, but the cups and plastic containers in the top are always still wet, so we have to dry them all first. Almost defeats the purpose of a dishwasher. The utensils are easy because I put all the teaspoons together, all the dessert spoons together, all the forks together, all the knives together - so in 4 easy handfuls they're put away.

My 18yo (!!!!) daughter just had a little hissy fit that she is the ONLY one to empty the dishwasher and WHY OH WHY can't one of her siblings do it. Seriously. She is a giant baby. We do about 7-12 loads/week and she empties it once/week max. I hate it, too (but I hate all housework!).
I didn't have a DW for 4 years so I always keep that in mind and am grateful even when *I* have to empty it!

That's funny. I don't mind it too much - there's worse chores....like actually washing up yourself without a dishwasher! For the first 20 years of my marriage we lived in a house with no dishwasher. I dealt with it. Finally DH bit the bullet and took out a cabinet in order to install one. You will never, ever hear me complain about emptying the dishwasher because it beats the heck out of having to wash them by hand! We still don't have one at our lake place, but I'm pushing for one if/when we ever get our renovations planned and done. For now, we use a LOT of paper plates there!

The only time I disliked this chore was when I was very pregnant and even then it was preferable to loading the dishwasher. It might help that I only do half loads because I have two dish drawers. It sucked when I was really pregnant and the top drawer was messed up though. I managed to fix it recently and I'm happy to do dishes in it now

My girls hate dishwasher stuff too! They much prefer to mow the lawn, take out the trash, shovel snow. I agree. To us, outdoor work is much better than indoor work.
But I will take emptying the dishwasher and about any other chore, indoor or outdoor, to cooking any day.
