Scoot over gals, this is a bench I can sit on. 6 miles each way, I can make it in about 12 minutes if I have to hurry. I spent a couple of months commuting 45 miles to work each way and that is something I will never willingly do again. Way too much wasted time and stress.

DH takes 12 minutes door to door, my commute is 15 minutes. These are considered incredibly short commute times around here. I love it, especially since I start work before dawn now.
I used to live 1.5 miles from my job, no lights, no stop signs, even. I loved that commute!

I love my less than 3 mile back road commute to school. I could walk if I had to. I know I am lucky....

When we moved from a big city to our current small one twelve years ago, I remember a letter to the editor the first week we got the local paper. A man was complaining that the drive from his house into downtown had gone from 4 minutes to 7! Since getting across our big city had taken more than an hour at the least, I thought 7 minutes sounded awesome! I work at four different libraries right now, with the shortest commute being 4 minutes from walking out my front door to walking into work, and the longest drive being 14 minutes.

Definitely me - I teach in a school which is just a mile away from home so about 5mins door to door. I appreciate it so much more having spent 2 years with a commute that took me 1-1.5hours. Talk about a time suck - I was so pleased when the local opportunity came up!

I work exactly 5 miles from my garage to my work parking lot. It takes me about 9 or 10 minutes

I don't think I could have it any other way. I have never lived more than 15 minutes from my work--and that's even with changing jobs! I feel so lucky and I appreciate the time I have. Many people where I live commute up to 3 hours a day. I could never do it.

I bought my house because it is about 10 minutes to my work and was even less to my son's school at the time.

Well, I work from home, so my commute is around 15 feet from our bedroom to my office. It's kinda nice. When we moved down to San Diego last year, DH was happy because his commute would only be 8 miles, to the UCSD campus. He can work some pretty flexible hours, so he could easily miss any rush hour traffic. His office moved closer to home a few months ago, and his ride is now 6 1/2 miles. He jokes that he's been trying to beat his personal best, and his fastest time to work (on I-5) is 12 minutes. If he doesn't take the freeway, his drive is GORGEOUS - right by Torrey Pines State Beach. Hey, if you're gonna be stuck in traffic, there are worse things to be looking at than the blue Pacific. It's so short a distance to work that he's walked it a few times. What a stud.

Me. I live less than a mile from work and can make it in about 5 minutes if I don't hit the light or stop for coffee. Love it!

I love my commute. It is about 5-6 miles and takes about 5 minutes. I take two turns out of my neighborhood, drive on a highway, and then turn down the road my school is on.

I have a 3 block commute to work. The downside to it is that I no longer can get in exercise walking to work. I used to always be on time for work, now I'm lazy and take my time. So I'm worried that at my next job it will be hard to get back into that punctual habit.

I'm less than two miles from work. It takes me about ten minutes to get there. I love being that close!

Currently I can go to work, to the gym, then back home again in a neat little triangle with under 6 minutes worth of time in the car.
When my extra curricular schedule (shuttling DD to dance and/or soccer) is clear, I can make a tank of gas last two weeks, easy.
This comes in handy when my non-Morning Person DD is moving exceptionally slow in the mornings. She goes to school where I teach, so she just comes with me to work.

I live 5 miles by car from work (3.5 as the crow flies...) in downtown Seattle. I take the bus in the morning (actually, 2 buses), and it is about 35 minutes from my front door to clocking in at work. On the way home, I take one bus (I am willing to walk DOWN the hill at the end of my day, but take a second bus in the morning up the 8 steep blocks to my hospital) and it is about 25 minutes from walking out the door at work to walking in the door at home.
My husband takes a vanpool to work (we both work at the same hospital), and at that time of day (0520), it is 7 minutes from our front door to walking into the hospital.
So, we could drive but are way to frugal to pay the massive parking fees to do so. Our work has a UPASS that gets us bus passes and various other perks, so we take advantage of that. We DEFINITELY bought our house because of its proximity to downtown Seattle. We absolutely won the lottery on this one--easy to get to work, a great K-8 alternative school 3 blocks one way, and an affordable (for Seattle) daycare 3 blocks the other way. Community center with skatepark, Olympic swimming pool and soccer/baseball fields less than a block away. And we can watch the fireworks off the Space Needle on NYE at the end of our street. We are so very lucky to have this location!!

Yes! I live about a mile from my main office and can drive to work in about 7 minutes. We have multiple site locations so I occasionally have to drive further for meetings, but I am happy that my office is close.
I moved to this city for this job so I purposely moved close to my office, which has worked very well for me!

I have between a 12 to 14 minute commute, I think that is why I've been there over 20 years.

I'm at 10 -15 minutes. It is awesome on most days. Considering the average commute here is an hour, I know how good I have it.
But... this commute has spoiled me. I'd love to change jobs but the thought of getting into traffic to do makes me not even job search unless it is at my facility.

I'm currently 5-10 minutes from my work, depending on traffic and construction. I love it. There are people who work there that commute 90 minutes each way. Um, no thanks!

For 15 years I had a long commute (40 miles morning/afternoon) Then 9 years ago I got my dream job at a school just 4 miles from the house. It really spoils you when you can get home after a long day in just 5-10 minutes. Same for me on the previous long commute, now grateful to have a short 6-7 minute commute.

I live about five blocks from where I work. Before I moved to this town, I had about a ten minute drive. I've always appreciated that I have no wasted time in my day.

Yes! My "commute" is now 13 steps down from my kitchen table to my office/studio (or five steps into DH's main floor office when I'm working for him). Can't beat it AT ALL!

I'm about 3.5 miles from work! So great. As long as I leave by 6:50, I'm at work by 7am.
Until 5 years ago my commute was anywhere from 22-30 miles from work.
I'm not sure I'll ever live out of town again.

My commute is only 15 minutes in the morning and about 20 in the afternoon due to school traffic. I don't mind the extra five minutes in the afternoon, it me a chance to decompress from the office.

I don't get the point of this thread. Anyone with a short commute is of course grateful for it. I think that goes without saying. This thread seems more like people bragging.
The next time someone posts about receiving cancer treatment, I guess it's ok to start a new thread saying "who else is glad they don't have cancer?"

For 20 years took me a minimum of 45 minutes one-way. It was longer if there were any traffic problems at all. For the last eight years of my worklife it was only an 8 mile drive and took me about 14 minutes. I loved my short commute.

Love mine! I can leave home, drop the baby off at daycare and be to work in about 18 min. And that is getting ready to shorten even more! My boss bought a new Corporate office for us that is 4 blocks from my home. DD will then go to daycare about 3 blocks from the new building. So my entire commute will be in 7 blocks! That won't happen until the first of next year though.
