After reading the commuting thread, I am so so so glad for my short commute. I live 1.6 miles from work and as long as I leave home by 7.54am I will be in my desk by 8am when I start. There is only 1 stop sign along the way. I really appreciate this now. We are merging with another campus 50 miles away. I'm not sure where the jobs will end up (there or here). I really hope it's here.

Not as short as yours (which is AWESOME btw) but dh is about 7 easy miles from home. So he comes home for lunch each day, can run home to meet a repairman, or take his lunch hour late to be home with the kids if needed.
Shortest commute ever for either of us!

I live 15 minutes from work. While I live in the burbs it is still part of the city. Going downtown used to take me 27 min from home to work by bus. It is so easy to get to work by car. Love it!

Dh drives me to work in the morning, and a friend/co-worker gives me a ride after work, so I don't personally have to worry about driving, traffic, etc. But I do love that my job is only about a five minute drive and that I can walk to or from work if necessary. I am done work at 3 pm and I love being home with my feet up and glass of red wine in my hand by 3:15pm.

For 15 years I had a long commute (40 miles morning/afternoon) Then 9 years ago I got my dream job at a school just 4 miles from the house. It really spoils you when you can get home after a long day in just 5-10 minutes.

I used to have this - a four minute drive. Now, I am 20 kilometres, but it can take anywhere from 30 - 60 minutes.

Oh my goodness - me. Just a couple miles and takes 10-15 minutes if traffic isn't appalling. Before this I had a nightmare commute of 90 minutes each way and I felt like I got my whole life back. Amazing.

Yes. 3 miles. One stop sign. And through gorgeous mountains to get there.

I currently live about 5 minutes' walk from work. It's quicker to walk than drive, although I sometimes have to take my car in for work purposes.
I get to come home every lunchtime which I love. It has helped get me through some tough times at work to be able to get home so quickly.

My commute is 1.5 miles and my younger DD's school is on the way. I love being so close to home. I've done the commute where you sit in traffic for an hour. No thanks.

I used to have a 40 minute, 25 mile drive to work. Usually it was opposite rush hour traffic unless there was an accident. Now my commute is about 12 minutes and still against traffic. I love it.

Have had many long commutes in the past. Sold my house last fall to be closer to DD's (charter) school. That previous commute was really hard.
Right now we're in a rental 1.5 miles from her school. I can get her there in 5 minutes and then be to work in 10-15. So thankful.

I had short commutes to a couple of jobs. At my last school I could get there in four minutes. Took about seven, because of lights, to get home. Sometimes it takes me 45 minutes to get home now, if traffic is bad. I can leave at four, but typically stay later to get work done. If I don't leave by 4:50, I will sometimes just stick around until 5:45 to avoid the hassle of rush hour traffic.

Absolutely. I'm doing substitute teaching now to make money while looking for a "real" job. (that's a joke by the way...so don't jump on me... ) -- I mostly sub at two schools, one that's about a 15 minute drive (which is fine, no complaints), but the other one is three blocks. lol. When I'm subbing there I always walk home with my neighbor who teaches there and we end up talking in front of my house for longer than it took us to actually walk home. lol My dh has always had a good commute. When my kids were little he first worked for the Department of Agriculture in downtown DC. We were renting and lived about three blocks from the subway. He took that in, and it was only a few stops. There were rarely any problems, unlike today when we seem to have unending Metro problems here. ugh. Anyway, I was a SAHM and we only had one car which I kept during the day since dh took the metro. Well then he was transferred to a satellite office right here in Virginia, just a quick drive south of us. He tried public transportation -- two trains and a bus, 55 minutes IF everything was on time. Then he drove it. Five minutes door to door. No brainer, we bought a used car. This was so nice because he could come home if there was an event at ds's school, and he was always home for dinner so we could all eat together. Then he got a job at the State Department, in downtown DC. But fortunately State is very close to the Virginia edge of DC, so all he has to do is drive across the bridge and he's there. So it's maybe 15 minutes. He has a free parking space so taking public transportation is SO not worth it. By the time he leaves work now the worst of rush hour is over so he's hardly ever stuck in something. We could have bought a house twice the size of this one for what we paid for it, but it would have been somewhere out west. Out in "Narnia" as my ds says. lol. Then dh would have had to sit in stop and go traffic twice every day. A smaller house so close to DC is SO much better for him.

I have to say there are times I envy my dh's commute, he only works about 10 miles from home with no stops. (One stop light in our "town" but he turns right, so at best he slows down). He is able to leave and park and walk to his office 10 mins from when he wants to work.

Thankfully my commute is short. I don't have to get on the freeway if I don't want to. It takes about 10 minutes to get to work and 5 minutes to get home. Which is perfect for me.
Dh has always had a long commute. I think the shortest he has ever had was 20 minutes. The worst was an hour and half to 2 hours on the ends of 12 hour shifts. His new job will end up being between 30 minutes and an hour on country roads depending on where we end up buying a house. They just don't build rocket sights near populated areas.

Me! I have worked from home for about a year now, but before that I also had short commutes - 15 minutes was as bad as it got. 10 minutes was normal.
Right now, my "commute" is walking my son to school, walking back home, pouring a cup of coffee and getting to work in my office.

I never had a long commute when I worked outside my home - maybe 10 minutes. I don't think I could stand it. I really feel for all those folks who are stuck on a highway for hours a day. To me, no job is worth it. Now, I just walk down the stairs from my bedroom. Easiest commute I've every had!

I am thrilled to have an eight mile, 20-25 minute commute. It's so much nicer than my old commute, which was only 20 miles, but could easily take up to 1 1/2 hours, especially on Friday nights.

I love my short commute so much I'm afraid it may be holding me back from finding a better paying position. ....... sigh There isn't an employer closer to where I live. Everything will be further out. I try to remind myself 15 miles still is not a long commute!

I have a SUPER short commute - my cake kitchen is in my basement. So I just have to walk downstairs.
What I hate, is that if I don't make a list and forget to pick up XX at the grocery store, then I have to leave to go get it....

I live less than 10 minutes from my office. I love it. I also love that I'm not too far away if something happens to my kids at school.
Years ago I had long commutes. It wasn't that they were far, just 30 miles, but the traffic was so bad it made the commute 45 to 60 minutes long. Also, when I worked in West L.A., they streets are not maintained so just the wear and tear on my car was really bad. I was so happy when my company opened a branch close by.

I used to drive 10 miles to work. It took about 18 minutes. I just retired, so my current "drive" is walking my dogs around the lake and going to the mailbox. I will probably end up doing something part-time, but it will have to be close. I hate driving to work in the snow.

DH works 6 miles from home, but our mothers both have him beat. My mom lives 5 blocks from her workplace and my MIL lives only 3 blocks from hers. Oh, and I have a friend who lives in an apartment in the same building as the doctor's office she works in. The only people I have ever known who could beat her by a tiny bit are the ones with their own businesses who own their building and live upstairs and have their business downstairs.
