Help all knowledgeable RefuPeas. My daughter is invited to a school friend's Bat Mitzvah. I hadn't noticed initially, but there was a reference on the invite about her Mitzvah Project - she's requesting items for a specific local charity. I am assuming this is in lieu of the traditional cash/check gift. But thought it was worth double checking. We previously have given checks in multiples of $18 when invited - but it's been quite a few years.
Thanks!

When we've had this situation it's been both. But it's usually things like canned goods for the food bank, kibble for the animal shelter or coats for the homeless shelter.

Hmmm - that's probably a safer way to go. I thought that the item they were requesting would be substantially less than I would traditionally give (they're looking for an item for the Humane Society). I think we'll bring the item and also give money in a card. I am one who often hosts please not gift parties, so wanted to make sure they weren't trying to funnel all gifts to the charity and didn't want to go against their wishes.

Yeah, she wants to raise money or goods for her charitable project (I forget the proper Hebrew name for it), but she's still open to a gift, too.

lucyg, are you thinking about tsedakah? That's what came to mind. The donation is apart from a gift and part the standard mitzvah project.
