A week ago yesterday I posted about an infected and swollen finger. I went to the walk-in pharmacy clinic and was given bactrum. I have taken 15 of the 20 pills.
Today, just randomly, my thumb and forefinger started feeling numb and tingly. Then the tips started to swell, but not a normal swelling. They were tight and hard. It came on quickly. Within in 2 minutes they were hard as rocks.
I even vent removed my ring because I thought the rest of my hand might swell.
This lasted about 45 minutes. Then it just went away. It has happened three times total today. So strange. I will call the doc in the morning, but wondered if anyone had ever heard of this? It could be related to the infection or something non-related.

Is there any red streaks anywhere on your hand? It could be cellulitis. I would bet it has to do with being on the wrong antibiotic.

No red streaking. No heat. If anything my fingertips are cool.

Vascular issues, blood flow. That's what I'd check into (I work in the dept of vascular surgery so it's where my head went first.)

My fingers have randomly done that a couple times over the years. The only thing that I know for certain about when it happens is that I had been touching something frozen at the time of the swelling. It was really freaky how big and hard my fingertips got just from a few minutes of touching the cold thing! No clue what's going on there.

That would freak me out enough to call the on call nurse at the ER and ask whether they thought I should come in.

I was outside at my son's baseball game. I didn't eat anything new or touch anything weird. It was rainy and 65.
The other two times I was in the car and at home. It has not happened again since I posted. I will call the doctor in the morning.

This is unlikely, but a good friend of mine has this and many doctors don't even know it exists. If they can't find another source, you might mention it. I hope you're feeling better soon!

That's pretty weird, TankTop. I hope you get it checked out soon and that there is a logical explanation for it. Keep us posted.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get checked out immediately and stop taking Bactrim. The same thing happened to my nephew and it was Steven Johnson Syndrome. Basically, his body burned from the inside out. He had to be treated in ICU and then moved to the burn unit of Children's Hospital. The doctor said that they were seeing more cases of this and they believe it is linked to Bactrim. I don't want to scare you, but if that is what it is, it can be very serious, extremely painful, and has a high mortality rate.

The same exact thing has happened to me. I've gotten swelling in my fingers, on my foot, my face and on several occasions my eyelid. So much fun when it looks like I got punched in the eye. Nothing seems to help it fully but a warm cloth on my eye for a while helps the swelling go down.
When I swell I get itchy inside, then it swells. And my finger tips get hard and swollen but hot. So I'm not sure it's the same exact as yours. I was writing it off as allergies. But now reading about HAE I'm kinda freaked out. I'd be interested to find out if you get a dr.'s diagnosis. Because I don't even know where to start!

Thanks for asking. It was terrifying and heartbreaking. He spent several weeks in the hospital, begging them to let him die because it was so painful. The skin sloughed off much of his body, including his testicles and tongue! He has recovered, but still has some lingering effects. His vision was affected, but has since stabilized. However, his tear ducts were damaged so he had to have surgery and can no longer wear contact lenses. This was a couple of years ago now, but the doctor told the entire family to stay away from Bactrim (and all sulfa drugs), Motrin, and Nyquil because those are the ones that they believe are the biggest contributors.

Thank you so much! If it comes back at all, please go to the ER immediately. With my nephew, he finished his antibiotic and the next morning he was complaining that parts of his body felt tingly. By that evening, he was swollen up and blistering. Thankfully the urgent care doctor knew of Steven Johnson Syndrome and they sent him by ambulance to the hospital and were able to start treatment within an hour.

I had a reaction to Bactrim. It started out as an awful headache on the back of my head by my neck. They gave me Vicodin and sent me home. I was back the next day with hives all over. I had a Benedryl IV and had to stay 2 nights. They were watching for Steven Johnson Syndrome but fortunately it didn't turn into that.

TankTop I hope you find out soon what's wrong and that it's easily treatable!!

He had only taken one dose. It was scary at the time because he was so young.

One of my students also recently had Steven Johnson Syndrome and it was horrible.

I do have Raynaud's and experience swelling as a symptom. The swelling usually occurs right as the numbness subsides and the color starts to return and the circulation starts to improve - it can last for an hour or two. Usually it is enough that a ring would become very tight and leave a mark but not enough that a ring would be a threat to circulation.

I have a kid who is allergic to sulfa drugs, and while it was an awful reaction when it happened (ear infection when he was about 8 months old) I am very appreciative that we learned early about it.
