it would be a tie between Cape Cod/Martha's VineYard post 9-11, Newport/ Nye Beach Oregon 1999 New Years. That's stateside. I'm no help! lol! I love both coasts for different reasons but Oregon coast is a soft spot. We've done European trips but not in that short amount of time.

My favorite was going on safari by myself, but of the family friendly you cannot beat a coast road trip from San Diego to Monterey. Monterey has an awesome playground cake Dennis the menace playground right near the fisherman's wharf. We love hiking around with a view of the ocean at point lobos and last time went garrapada state park. If you have more time you can go up to sf and even to wine country. I have to say I loved the tacky Madonna inn, especially their toffee sponge cake. They have all sorts of amazing cakes, even if I weren't staying there I'd go have cake!

I've traveled the US, Europe, Caribbean; taken road trips, cruises, and bus tours. My all time favorite vacation destination was hands down, Costa Rica. You could easily fill up every minute of the day with activities, or simply do nothing but relax. Have fun with your travel plans!!

Thank you for your responses and input.
We would love to do Alaska someday but it appears as though those are only done in the summer. We do a family trip in July every year so dh can't do a full week or longer during June or August so Alaska is out.
Maui- Hmmm....that is a thought. We have never really talked about Hawaii. My ds is going next month on his honeymoon.
Costa Rica- I have heard great things about it. It seems like a big trip. I guess just the unknown and I have heard a few safety concerns for there.
St Johns- I will have to check that out.
We have considered doing a Canada/New England trip or cruise. We have always wanted to go to that area and it would be a great time of year to try it.
Thank you again! I am going to check some of these out and see if we can get planning. We often plan trips last minute but we know this one we don't want to wait last minute or we might find limited options.

Is Europe an option?
We went to Portugal in October one year it was perfect.. Lisbon is perfect for the 3-4 days and then we went on a wine tour.
It was magical

Canadian Rockies - Jasper, drive the Icefields Parkway, Columbia Icefields, Lake Louse, Banff. Personally I like Jasper better (closer to me) it's less commercialized, I don't need to shop at the Gap while I'm in the mountains that's what cities are for. If you came in October it won't be busy and the weather will still be nice.

For me, my answer would be a Disney Cruise, hands down. I think our cruise was 12 days but they have shorter sailings as well. We had our (then 2.5 yo) DD with us and we had a fabulous time, but it would be equally fun without kids. The entertainment is top notch, the food was great and the service was amazing. There was always something to do for everyone. Even DD is trying to talk us into planning another cruise and she's since been to Disney World so the lack of rides isn't a deterrent. We want to take an Alaskan cruise at some point and will go with Disney Cruise Lines when we eventually do.
Maui is nice too, I've been there three times. But depending on where you stay and what you do, it's not a sure thing. We've been to Maui and stayed in a roach motel (ugh, we didn't make the reservations, it was a wedding gift that I really wanted to love but didn't), and on the other end of the spectrum we've stayed at the Westin which was very nice but you really pay for that too.

For that length of time, I'd do London, Hawaii, or Yellowstone! We loved Wyoming and Montana, and they're beautiful in October. Getting slightly chillier but good travelling weather. We had a fantastic road trip through Utah - Colorado - Wyoming - Montana at that time of year.

I love Greece! I've spent a week in Skiathos whith friends, and two weeks in Crete with my husband and children. Both vacations were great. The food is fantastic, the Greeks are the most kind and relaxed people I've ever met and Greece is rich in history and culture.

I'd get a villa in Tuscany and do day trips to all the beautiful little towns nearby. I've only done the highlights: Rome, Florence, Venice and Pompeii, but I have always wanted to explore the villages. Ride bikes on the wall of Sienna.. Explore ruins, tiny churches and libraries and enjoy the vistas.
Hawaii is also lovely, and if you do a coup,e of islands you need time. We spent three days each on Maui, Oahu and the big island. So fun. But I feel like it was crazy expensive.

Banff and Lake Louise are absolutely beautiful. It may be very cold by that time of year, however. We were there in August and it was cool then.
A tour of the California wine country would be lovely at that time.
Also, Sanibel and Captiva would be beautiful.
We just spent 4 days at The Swag, in western NC. I have never been so relaxed in my life. Perfect peace and quiet - no TV's in rooms - on top of a mountain at 5,000 ft elevation - no car or city noises at all - miles and miles of beautiful hiking trails. Rustic elegance, and every need you have is met. I would love to go back and spend a week, and that time of year will be wonderful in NC with the leaves changing!

For mid October in the US, I would choose something in New England for the fall colors or something in the southwest (a lot of different national parks, great time to visit).
I love Costa Rica, but I think mid October is still rainy season.
I would also consider Europe, but it is more travel time, especially if you are coming from CA.

My favorite ever (so far) was the week we spent in a town home right on the beach in Panama City Beach, Florida. You stepped off of the patio and right into the sand. It was just a few steps to the water. I really want to vacation in the Florida Keys. We are taking a big RV road trip to Yellowstone this summer. THAT my be my new favorite vacation! Do you own the RV or are you renting it? That sounds like a lot of fun!!! We don't own an RV.

We spent a week on a SCUBA diving trip at CoCo View Resort in Roatan, Honduras. Best vacation ever!!! But don't go there unless you are both SCUBA certified. There's only a few things to do on the island for non-SCUBA divers, and it would probably be a waste of money.

We spent our 50th wedding anniversary there and have been back once since. We are going for 3 days in August. The leaves are beautiful in early October, but the weather can be dicey. But even with less than perfect weather, this place is next to heaven. And the hospitality is unmatched by anything we've ever experienced. Truly a special, special place.

Another vote for Aruba - we went there for our honeymoon and stayed at the Hyatt and it was fabulous! Aruba is outside the hurricane belt so you don't need to worry about that. The weather was perfect, the people were so nice and the restaurants were great! I can't wait to go back!

Best this hemisphere: St. Lucia Anse Chastanet in May 2006 (we're going back in less than a month)
Best European: Sweden in 2012 - we spent a lot of time in Stockholm but also had side trips to Linkoping and Upsala.
Best overall: Palau in December 2013. We had 4 days land based where we spent our mornings diving with a great dive op, lunches on deserted islands, and afternoons on the beach hanging out drinking and snorkelling. Then 7 days on a dive liveaboard. In the middle we had one day where we went to Jellyfish Lake in the morning and toured the WWII sites on the big island by car in the afternoon.

I was the only diver on the island (DH wasn't allowed to dive that week due to medical reasons) so the divemaster and I had the reefs to ourselves. I saw a 14ft great hammerhead!
Even if you aren't a diver, they have a great snorkel package.

Not my favorite vacation ever (I'm not a huge roadtripping fan/prefer beach vacations), but I've done the drive between LA and SF and it is awesome. We made stops in Solvang (so cute), stayed at the Madonna Inn, toured Hurst Castle, drove through Big Sur, stayed in Carmel and Monterey, went to a race at Laguna Seca, and did the usual touristy stuff in SF. There's tons of stuff to see and do and we had a great time.

I'm heavily biased towards Europe, but mid-October isn't a great time of year for the UK or Ireland - days feel quite short, the weather may not be great, and in Ireland at least, we found tourist things were literally closing for the year Oct. 1 or thereabouts. So, if Europe sounds good, I'd go for Italy or Greece for better weather. If you want to stay stateside, two of our favorites have been New Orleans (so much history, so much good food!!) and Moab UT (which I didn't expect to like at all, but REALLY REALLY did).

Glacier National Park in Montana. That place just captured my soul. I'm not sure about mid-October though. It may have started snowing by then. I also really loved Key West. It was such a relaxing, everybody loves everybody kind of place. I also have St. John on my to go to list soon!

London. I can sit on a beach that long, too, and the world is full of beaches! If you don't mind driving, you get a variety of things to do in California, and 7 to 9 days would absolutely be a good time frame for a mix of city and nature.

Three all time favorites! 1. Family trip skiing/snowboarding at Keystone, Colorado for Thanksgiving. 2. Several family trips to Oahu and the Big Island, Hawaii. 3. Our 30th Anniversary on a Royal Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas, St Thomas/St John and St Maarten. Best times ever! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)
