. . . am I spending all of my time getting rid of things?
So far, one visit from the junk haulers, two trips to the dump, and countless trips to the charity drop-off. I actually do know why I have to get rid of so much stuff, which is that we are losing our giant storage space and my crafts room, so things that I haven't made decisions about for years that have been taking up space need.to.go. Plus I think I literally have saved every clothing item my kids have worn "just in case," and, now that we are definitely done after this baby, and this baby is a girl after four boys in a row, I have so.much.stuff to donate. So tired now.
One question -- do you think I can Freecycle the couch that my cat used as a scratching post? It is in great shape. Well, other than the fact that the arms were used as scratching posts.

Because new house, fresh start. Who wants to move junk, and who wants junk in their pretty new house? nobody.
Freecycle the couch, someone will take it. Slipcover and it's perfect for a kid starting out.

Why move stuff you don't need or want? I'm cleaning out a couple of closets, my motto is if I haven't used it in 2 years then it's just taking up space. It's freeing.

We moved to a bigger house in late December. Before we moved we purged like crazy. It felt soooo good. After we moved, even the stuff I kept didn't seem to work in the new house, so we've purged even more. I gave away my entire living room suite of furniture. It's just stuff, I don't miss any of it. Good luck with you move, I know how exhausting it is!

Because if you don't purge you have to spend the time/energy to pack it up, the money to move it, the time/energy to unpack only to decide you don't want to have it cluttering up your nice new home.
Congratulations on the new baby and new home.

It's so freeing to get rid of stuff. Now you can get new stuff!
I set a multitude of things at the curb that I didn't want to donate and that didn't sell at the yard sale. Just set it out and let nature take its course--someone will probably take it, or else the garbage man will. (Not sure how your trash works, but I was able to contact the city about all my extra and they took everything still left after the scavengers were done for a very reasonable extra fee)

I am going through the exact same thing. Bigger house, less stuff.

I think no matter what size you are moving to, it's just natural to want to purge and not have to move it all. We only have been in this house 4 years and I'm sure when I start packing this week, I'll be purging stuff again.

You'll be happy when you get to your new house and don't have piles of unwanted clutter. Your obviously not nesting yet or this would be an enjoyable process?!

Good for you. You won't be spending $$ to move stuff you won't use. We -unfortunately - kept too much when moving. Big waste of money. It didn't work well in the new space and we ended up getting rid of a lot of our old furniture after moving in.

I purged an entire closet last Saturday. It was wonderful. Why keep stuff you don't need or want? It just clutters up your space. Tomorrow I am having a battle with my linen closet. It is six shelves high and ten feet wide. Should be fun.

Congratulations on the new baby and new home. We did it when we moved from our 1200 SF home into a 3500 SF home. Who wants to waste the time, money, effort and energy to move a bunch of stuff you don't really need or want but have been too tired / busy / preoccupied / whatever to actually make the time to get rid of it sooner? It just seems like a good time to force yourself to sort through your stuff and make some hard (or in some cases not so hard!) decisions. I will say it felt really good to take those three pickup truckloads of stuff to the Goodwill, and sell off a carload of stuff in a scrappy garage sale at a not so local LSS. I only wish I would have had a little more space at our old house to go through more things properly and get rid of more beforehand, because then I wouldn't have to be doing it NOW, three years AFTER we moved!

Agree, new house, new start. I might be moving in the next several months to someplace a lot bigger as well. I'm looking forward purging before then.
