DH has been talking about his time spent in Maryland and the crab. Then he started talking about seafood boils. So I tried one tonight. And while it wasn't a fail, it wasn't what I expected.
I read pinterest rest and recipe sites and ended up using 1 1/2 quarts of my homemade veggie stock, 3 tablespoons of Old Bay, 1 quartered lemon and bring to boil. Added 6 golf ball sized new red potatoes and boiled for 10 minutes. Added 2 ears of corn cut in thirds and 4 Cajun sausages from the butcher. Boiled for 10 minutes. Then added 2 lobster tails split in half, 8 large cleaned/deveined shrimp and 4 crab legs and boiled 6 minutes.
It it was good, but not loaded with flavor. I'm a wuss when it comes to cayanne and I sprinkled on a lot more Old Bay before eating. I got the freshest seafood I could this afternoon and cooked it for dinner tonight.
So I need to try this again, but I need some hints, tips or tricks to make it better.

Did you use a stock pot inside? Or some type of set up outside?

When I make it, I only use shrimp (and I don't use sausage because I don't eat it LOL.) If you look on pinterest, there are a ton of recipes, but they are all mostly the same.
Did you put the old bay directly in the water or wrap it in cheesecloth? When you wrap it up, you can use more and it infuses in the water better. I just saw in the grocery store that old bay has started selling (or maybe I just didn't notice it before) premeasured packets of seasoning so you don't have to go through the trouble of finding cheesecloth. You just throw the packet in the water.
I cut my potatoes in half, I think it helps absorb the flavors.
ETA: look on pinterest for shrimp boil rather than crab boil which is a lesser known name

I am from Maryland and can't wait to go to Ocean City for their crabcakes and hard shelled crabs!
We make something similar and use shrimp and sausage and thyme. Also corn on the cob, cut into small pieces and potatoes. So good!

We use beer for the stock instead of veggie/chicken broth. That's what our recipe calls for too, but we don't drink alcohol, and we can't go to the store to get just one can of beer. Once we had some leftover from our Super Bowl party and it really added great flavor!

You can buy single cans of beer at most quick-stop sort of places here. But maybe we have some state law that allows it? IDK.

We use beer for the stock instead of veggie/chicken broth. Oh I forgot that part! Yes, you have to add beer to the broth/water. It helps with the flavor. If you have serious objections to the alcohol (which will get cooked off in the end) you can use non-alcoholic beer.

My guess is you didn't season it as much as you think you did and you are missing the salt. Most of the time when people say it lacks flavor in a dish that has a lot of flavor filled ingredients what they are really missing is the background saltiness.
Old Bay has a recipe on their site. It uses 1/2 a cup of Old Bay plus a tablespoon of salt for three quarts of liquid. Your recipe is half that amount of liquid so that would come to a quarter cup of Old Bay (4 tablespoons) plus 3 teaspoons of salt.

I love crawfish boils, etc. Your ingredients sound great. Definitely beer for the broth and more cayenne and a whole onion. I am used to having my tube of lip balm right there on the table next to my drink while digging in. My lips are typically burning. A friend of mine always but a jalapeno cut in half in the water but I don't think that is "traditional".

More Old Bay and beer. I'll look for the bag in the store next time and try adding onion. I did salt the stock while it was coming to a boil.

That's a standard recipe in New Orleans. We use Zatarain's Liquid Shrimp and Crab Boil (concentrated) with sausage or shrimp, potatoes, onion and corn. Most people do their crawfish this way (we are not crawfish fans in this family). Enjoy!

I have made this 3 times with great success. I used this recipe and step by step instructions in the link. It was easy, delish and everyone loved it. We make a boil every couple of weeks with shrimp, summer sausage, corn and potatoes. I put the beer and old bay right in the water... Turns out perfectly! We LOVE boil nights!
