Yesterday, it was a 6th grader with an iPhone 6+.
Today, it was a Sophomore wearing an Apple Watch.
My Freshman son doesn't even have a smart phone. Before last year, he didn't have a cell phone at all.
I was proctoring AP tests a few weeks ago, and there were specific calculators we had to look out for, because some can access the Internet. And we were instructed to look out for smart watches, but everyone laughed. I guess next year we won't be laughing.
Am I alone in thinking that 12 year olds are walking around with more internet access than they need?

Most of my 8 yr old's friends have iPhones.
I'd be shocked by a high schooler who didn't have a smart phone, quite frankly.

Yes, it is ridiculous and if you could see some of the stuff that some of those 12 year olds were searching for...

My Freshman son doesn't even have a smart phone. Before last year, he didn't have a cell phone at all. I don't know what a Freshman is - what age is that? I would probably be more surprised if a kid in high school (which is Year 7 onwards here) did NOT have a smart phone. I do agree that an iPhone 6 for a 6th grader is a bit much. Again, I have no idea how old a Sophomore is so I don't know if this would be considered unusual or over the top.

Cathleen (15) is a minority among her friends in that she doesn't have a smart phone - just a standard mobile Annabelle (8) - I would say that easily 50% or more of her friends have mobile phones and many of them have smart phones - I think what's happening is that mum or dad gets an upgraded phone and the old one gets passed down to the child. She doesn't have a mobile and won't have one for some time still (Cathleen was 13 and Simon was 16 when they got theirs - and there were practical reasons in both cases) I (44) am the only adult I know other than my MIL(80) and GMIL (98) who doesn't have a mobile phone of some sort. I do have an ipod touch however so I'm not completely out of the loop - just mostly

Most freshman are 14-15 and sophomores are 15-16; juniors are 16-17 and seniors are usually 17-18-19

I sit by a land line at work 7.5 hours 5 days a week, so if someone needs to get in touch with me during my work hours, call me there. Or email me, I can access the internet on my work computer (which I don't), or on my iPod through the office WiFi. Have a land line at home. I rarely talk on the phone, and I have my own ideas about 'texting', but that is a whole other subject. No need to shell out upwards of $100+ per month on a cell phone plan. (My DH does have what he calls a dumb phone, for $30 a month.)

My rule is if you help me pick out what I need in a phone, I'll get you one. Our plan comes due this Friday. Apparently I now need the iPhone 6. I do find I use it, but I can also leave my phone at home charging and not notice it for several days. It drives my son crazy.

Yes, I was in 8th grade before I learned what several of those words meant. Technically it is Grade 9/Freshman because most of our kids in the US go to kindergarten before first grade. We have 13 years of school.

We also have a landline at home. DH has a smart phone through a monthly service (not a plan) - I think it's $45/month but he's much more of a phone person than I am. I do text via the iPod but only DH and DS...and I'm a fan of full sentences and actual spelling

My almost 14 year old, incoming freshman, does not have a smart phone. He does not need one. He can have one if he goes the year without missing any assignments.
He has a desktop and a tablet and has access to multiple laptops so he isn't hurting for technology

The phone doesn't surprise me although most kids, including mine, have older versions. Mine could have upgraded in the fall with their own money but went with the older, no extra cost model.
I haven't seen anyone with an Apple watch yet.
Teachers at our HS regularly have kids use their smart phones in class.

I just got a smart phone last Dec. I still only call and text, with occasional email and internet. High schooler got a smart phone last summer just before senior year but he has to pay for the monthly service. I would only pay for the basic so it took a while before he could pay for it.

We have preschool but not 4K. we have VPK here (voluntary pre-kindergarten) and I remember my son going to pre-K back in the 90s in AZ (the only one of my children to do so - my middle was homeschooled until 3rd and my youngest started with K and was the only one in her K class who hadn't been in VPK)

Most of my 8 yr old's friends have iPhones. I'd be shocked by a high schooler who didn't have a smart phone, quite frankly. Well, then you'll be shocked to learn that my son doesn't even have a cell phone. Period. He hasn't needed one. I'll probably buy him a "go phone" later this summer as his birthday gift. We've been discussing it already. I'm planning on putting $100 on it and he's to use it for emergencies. If he wants a smart phone he can get a job and pay for it himself. I have a smart phone. The only reason I do is that I use it in my business. If I didn't have a business I'd probably only have a go phone, myself.

Even kids on free/reduced lunch/medicaid/assistance have smart phones in my school. Rare is the student without one.
My children had no phone until my older one was a senior (year 12, about 17/18 years old) and my younger a sophmore (year 10).
Why did I finally cave? They were left out socially. Texting is how their friends arrange activities, communicate news, etc. They rarely even talk. Just text. They do not use land phones. My older one works and has always paid for his.

I polled my 7th grade classes last week. I am doing a project that needs an iphone 5 or above. In a class of 30, maybe 5 didn't. I'm not surprised anymore. As a teacher, I'm glad for it. Makes projects much easier.

Our dd in hs used her smart phone daily in class. If someone didn't have one they would share. They had to access the lessons that the teacher posted. Yes, the lessons were posted on the internet, the kids did them and the teacher reviewed with them.
The hs has wi-fi available to all students. Most of their work was done on the internet and submitted that way too.

Most kids in our schools have smart phones in grades 7-12. It's part of the social fabric now, and it's integrated with all the other technology. My daughter, who graduated high school three years ago, didn't have a smart phone until she graduated. It's really in the last few years that they've become ubiquitous. Teachers incorporate them into the lessons -- they have to be careful not to assume all the kids have one because most do.

It's common here for kids to get a smart phone in 6th grade (beginning of middle school, which is usually grades 6-8 in the U.S.). They would be left out socially without one, because while texting is part of the way they communicate, a lot of it is also done through Instagram, Tumblr and Snapchat. I know it seems excessive to some, but I was a kid who went without some things because my parents thought they were a waste of money or time - never had the right clothes, wasn't allowed to go out to restaurants or movies or to the mall with friends, no phone conversations longer than ten minutes - and I remember how isolating it was. If I can avoid that for my kids, I will.
