My son (17) used to collect Star Wars Lego sets and would like to sell them. Most are in Ziploc bags, and I'm going to help him sort through all the pieces to make sure the sets are complete. He also has other sets that are not Star Wars. All in all, I'd say we probably have 20-30 sets to sell. I really don't want to sell them one by one, and would ideally just like to get them out of the house! What would you do? I'm thinking of doing Craigs List, and just putting them all in one listing. However, some are rare/discontinued and I don't want to give them away. Help!

I think you would make a lot more money on eBay than Craigslist. Research the names of the sets on eBay and then look up the closed listings - both completed and sold - to get an idea of what the sets are selling for.

Do a bit of research before you put them up for sale. Some are quite valuable.

I know it's a hassle, but I think you'd make decent money on eBay.

I just wanted to say that I am impressed that all of your sets have been kept in sets. All of ours are mixed into two big containers. Then again DS never once created the set as per the instructions, he always made his own hybrid creations.

Then again DS never once created the set as per the instructions, he always made his own hybrid creations. I have giant tubs full of pieces and could never sort them out back into sets now. The son who loved Legos the most is off in the Navy now, but I still hang on to them. Lol. The youngest is 12 and he's pulled out one small container of what he likes but he rarely plays with them anymore. Since yours ARE in sets OP, then Ebay would bring you the most money for them.

As someone who paid for a good chunk of her wedding by buying multiple boxes of mixed Lego pieces & directions from someone via local classifieds and then sorting them out and selling them set by set on ebay, I definitely suggest doing that. Or else you can just sell the whole lot to me. Seriously, though, at least grab some of the instruction manuals, and enter the set # along with the word "Lego" into ebay and then on the left click the "sold" box and the "used" box to see what those sets brought in the past. ETA: Here are Used Star Wars sets that sold on ebay recently. High to Low value.

To this day I still occasionally scroll through ads hoping for another person to opt to dump a mess of Lego sets in a big lot like that.

I see large lots on our local Craigslist. They seem to sell in a reasonable time frame. You could try that first with the same price you would sell it for on Ebay if you were doing a buy it now. If that doesn't work, then aim for the larger Ebay market.

Do you have any shops in your area that would consign them or buy them?
I know here we have one store that specializes in Star Wars toys and one store that specializes in vintage and discontinued Lego. Both stores would by them from you as a lot and you would get more than you would at a garage sale or CL.

I wouldnt! Time goes by SO quickly...save them for his kids...you will be glad you did. Totally agree!! My kids favorite things in the whole world are their dad's Star Wars and Lego from when he was little. Both my kids and I think MIL is AMAZING and awesome for saving them for the grandkids!!

If you don't need the money and have the room to save them, that would be what I suggest too. My mom saved my brothers' legos and it's my kids very favorite toy at Grandma's house. Even my oldest kids get into the act and start building. There are no sets, just two big tubs all jumbled together.
Otherwise, if you do want to sell e-bay is a great place to do it.

I wouldnt! Time goes by SO quickly...save them for his kids...you will be glad you did. We'll probably save a few, but I already have so many toys in the attic it's ridiculous! Normally I'm a person who likes to organize and get rid of things, but not when it comes to the kids' childhood toys. Thank you for all the suggestions! I think we'll start sorting the sets out and go from there. I may just sell them in one lot but a few are retired and worth some $$. After I went through all of the manuals last night, it looks like there are about 43 sets. Yikes!

Thanks - now I have something else to look for when I'm out thrifting and hitting estates sales! Excellent idea though! I noticed that the mixed lots, sold by the pound, are doing well on eBay as well. After looking at that link, I wish I had a Millennium Falcon sitting around! The prices on those are unreal! Does anyone knowknow what they sold for new? Just curious. I believe it was $400 new, I saw it when the Lego store opened in San Diego in 2011 asks was amazed one set was so pricy, but wow, the after market is insane. I believe they made a smaller one in the $150 range as my sister I mean niece had that one ;-) To the OP, its more work but I'd sell them separately, to sell as a lot you'll end up selling to someone who is willing to do the work of selling them separately.

Also, the prices keep rising on new sets. I'm glad I held on to my sons. He will have kids someday and this will save him a ton of money

I would save the most special or rare ones for grandkids. But this comes from someone who saved a lot of my kids stuff.

I would try selling the least valuable ones as a "lot" (set) on Ebay. Posting good pictures (you can get them from the internet) is important. Many times the mini-figures are more valuable than the lego set so price those too. The retired sets, I would list on Ebay as well. Your market is a lot larger on Ebay than Craigslist.

I do that. It's trickier now, though, because my kids will want them if they see them. Even if it's something they don't use. I did really well with some base-plates a few years back. My kids very rarely use base-plates, but they would have wanted to hoard them anyway. The kicker is that I will sell things like that around Christmas and turn around and buy whatever Lego sets my kids are into at the time with the money!
