I saw somewhere, sometime (I think in a magazine article) that a crafter had a rolling sheet pan rack (like a bakery would use) in their craftroom. I have been debating getting one for my room. I would use it for partially finished projects, organizing page kits, my daughter's clay crafts that need to be baked etc. If you have one, tell me what you like or dislike about it before I invest in one! TIA- Tina (samantha's mom)

I don't have one yet but it was/is in my original plan for my room. I have a spot in front of the electrical access panel where (to be up to code) I couldn't run the cabinets wall to wall, so I ended the cabinets in front of the wall with the panel leaving enough space for a bakery cart to be parked there. Ali Edwards uses a tall one in her studio, Blayne White (Scraproom software) uses the shorter half size rack which is what I want to get. I want one with a solid stainless steel top so I can use that as a portable work surface, many of the ones I've seen just have rails and no top and I don't think that would be quite as useful IMO. I was debating for a bit whether I wanted the Martha Stewart rolling cart from Home Depot instead because it looks nicer but has fewer drawers/shelves, but I never could find one actually built and displayed in a store so I could see what I'm getting firsthand before ordering it sight unseen for $300 and having it shipped to the store. I'm sure it comes flat packed in a box and needs assembly, and a lot of that knock together stuff is only so-so when it comes to quality. Here's a link to my thread on that subject: link
ETA: I just clicked on the link to the pan rack I linked on the other thread, and the price has dropped to $99.09! Finally pulled the trigger and hit "buy". I'm so glad I waited, they were over $200 when I was originally looking at it!

I have a silly question. Once you buy the rack, do you have to buy the cookie sheets to go in it?
I ask because right now I'm using the Jet Max Cubes with 4 shelves stacked up. The BH PL protective pages boxes fit perfectly in them, so I've been storing my unfinished layouts in there. It's really handy but I wonder if the rack would work better.

I don't have room, but if I was a crafter who needed more space for things to dry, it would be awesome. I keep my unfinished projects in Iris cases. I wonder if seeing the projects every day out in the open would make me want to finish them.

Yes, you have to buy the trays separately. You don't need to buy the expensive aluminum baking pans though, there are plastic trays the same size that are much less expensive. Since I'm not actually baking anything on them I'm not going to spend the extra money for metal ones. I like the idea of being able to lay out both pages of a 12x12 spread on the tray the way I want it, set the whole thing aside when I need to, and be able to come back to it exactly the way I left it without leaving it out somewhere where it will be in the way.

I want to be able to switch back and forth if I get stuck on something and need to step back from it for a while without necessarily having to totally pack it all up and put it away, or if I get bored. I get to the point with my December Daily (or other theme) albums where I just can't look at Christmas stuff anymore and I have to switch gears and do something else for a while. Right now my only option is to pack everything up and put it totally away to make room for something else.

I would love to have one of these to store 'in-process' layouts out of the way, too. I do remember that thread when we first discussed it-- I'm glad the price dropped so you were able to buy it, crazy4scraps! I don't know if it would work for me unless there was some way to totally cat-proof it, though... I think I remember Ali Edwards having a tall bakery rack in her studio, but I don't remember if that was before she re-designed it, maybe?? (I haven't read her blog for quite a while)

I don't have one, but sometime ago I saw one in the magazine where women create and thought it was an excellent idea for scrapbooking.

(I haven't read her blog for quite a while) I could have bought it before, but I was sitting on the fence because I still had/have so much to do to get everything else in the room organized before I'll really get around to using it. Right now my old table tops are still stacked against the wall in that spot and I need to get them dragged out of there, but they are super heavy and I doubt I could get them up the steps without help. I'm glad the price went down though, I do like a good deal! And the shipping was only $16 too. I would have spent that in gas driving all around trying to find exactly the kind I wanted anyway. I still have to get trays from somewhere. I'm sure it will work great, and I've spent $100 on stupider things than that before so it's worth the gamble. What if you made a wrap for the sides out of sturdy fabric like canvas or twill and securely velcroed it around the top and bottom edges? I would think that might keep cats out. Ali E. did have a tall one but I thought that would be overkill for me. The one I ordered is half height and has a flat top so I should be able to use it as a work surface, maybe for the Big Kick or something.

Have you ladies looked at "The Container Store"? Here's a link.... Container StoreI've seen those. I would rather have solid trays vs. the wire mesh Elfa drawers to hold all the small embellishments and small parts of paper piecings that I use on my layouts. The other benefit to the bakery rack is that it will hold up to ten closer together trays in the same vertical space compared to a maximum of only 7 drawers on the Elfa. ETA: The other advantage to the bakery rack is that the trays are 18" x 26" so I can place my in-process 12x12 two page layout right on the tray the way I want it with the pages side by side the way they will be assembled and can slide the whole tray into the rack leaving everything as is until I'm ready to pull it out and work on it again.

I love the idea of a sheet pan rack, but I don't have the space, and I'm not sure I have the need either. I use about half of my 12 x 12 Sterilite drawers to stack my "in progress" pages, kits, and other projects. Seems to me that the drawers do the same thing as the sheet pan rack, but on a much smaller scale. My plastic drawers might not look as nice, but my space is tucked away in a corner and doesn't have to look amazing. It really is a cool idea~ For those of you who already have them, or something like them, I'd love to see photos of how they work in your rooms!

Just FYI--the Container store has various inserts for their drawers. You can choose to have a drawer open (without sections) or get an insert that is divided. I have both. I also vary the depth of my baskets in my carts. Some are single, some double and a couple of triple depth baskets.

Just wanted to say that the rack I ordered only a couple days ago from that place I linked in the other thread arrived today! It took longer to peel the blue protective plastic off of the top than it did to assemble it which was pretty awesome. It's very sturdy, and a little taller than I expected once the wheels are on but it's not a bad thing. Now I just need to order some trays.

I did a search on the trays and even the plastic ones are quite expensive, especially if you want them to fit the 18x26 slots. The measurements seem to be off a bit. Please let me know if you find some that are suitable. I would be interested in using the baking system as well, it looks like a really good solution.

It doesn't matter if the measurements are a little off, I think they all are. The slots on the sides of the rack that hold the trays in place are about 1.5" wide, so they wouldn't fall out. The tolerance isn't that tight. These are the ones I'm considering. They are about $7 each. The shipping to me from this place (for 12) is $24.30 so I'm going to call around to several local restaurant supply places to see if they are something I can get locally and go pick up. Even with paying that for shipping it would put the trays at a little over $100, and I've already saved more than that with the price drop on the rack so I would be okay with it if I can't find something similar here. Couldn't you do something very much like that with an inexpensive set of grid cubes and zip ties? What I like about the bakery rack is the size of it because it allows me to sort layouts in progress all laid out on the tray. I also like that the trays are about 1" deep or so, so small things and paper piecings will stay on the tray.

I had grid cubes years ago and hated them so that won't work for my house but thank you for the suggestion! I like the idea of having a home for layouts in progress so am imagining trays on the rack. I just think a wooden version of a child's drying rack goes with my craft spade vibe....if I ever make it, I will post pics!

If you look at restaurant supply stores for the half baker's rack, you can find some good deals. Also you can get the pans at Sam's Club or Costco for around 2 for $11.

Update...I found one locally for $40..although it is a little smaller than a true bakery one. This one was used in a nursing home with trays for the residents to be served their meals on...so it has like dining room trays that are molded plastic. It is about six feet tall and holds 10 trays. The rack itself has lttle clips next to each level which will work out great for me to mark the trays by project.

I hadn't really planned on ordering it when I did (I wasn't quite ready for it at the moment), but the price was too good to let it go without getting it since it was something that was in my long range plan. It arrived a few days before we had out of town company come visit for ten days, and I because of that I haven't had a chance to go around locally and look for some trays/pans so I haven't actually USED it yet. It fits like a glove in the space I allotted for it. However, I did take it out of the box and assemble it which only took about 15 minutes or so (and the tools were included in the box). It seems very sturdy, has big wheels that roll nicely on the carpet and I'm sure once I do get a chance to source some trays it will work perfectly for what I need. It was a good buy for the price. I'll post a pic on here once I do that so you can see it in action.

crazy4scraps thanks for review! I like that it has a top on it. I found another for $60 online, but it's without top -plus I'd feel better ordering from a proven company. I need to measure space but I think I've got a great spot in closet for it. It could hold other little lose projects too. I'm thinking about getting back into beading. Thinking, not doing - story of my craft life! Hope you get time to use it soon!
