I had a laugh at this picture .... my daughter likes jumping in pictures and I didn't even think about it with the poncho. This is like one of the Pinterest "Nailed It!" pictures. We were in Ithaca, NY for Memorial Day weekend (in the Finger Lakes area in western NY). Such a beautiful part of the state! Lots of gorges, waterfalls, and state parks. Fairy tale setting in Buttermilk Falls State Park: Buttermilk Falls State Park (right before I busted my brand new filter, ARGH!): Lower Falls at Robert Treman State Park. This one is roped off with a lifeguard for swimming - pretty sweet swimming hole!: Lucifer Falls in Robert Treman State Park. The stone walls, steps, and bridges are also really nice along the trail: One of my favorite flowers - forget-me-nots: I think this is Dame's Rocket? Pretty, but considered a noxious weed: Stream on Edwards Lake Cliff Preserve: On our way home we went to the Corning Museum of Glass, which was fantastic. This piece was my favorite in the Contemporary Art Wing. It's called Carrion:

I totally laughed when I read your description of your daughter jumping with her poncho on!! do you mean that sort of 'misty, soft' look of the water?? I was wondering that too. Those pictures remind me of some of the (hellaciously-difficult) jigsaw puzzles my mom and I used to put together...

I'm sure it's related to the shutter speed, letting some of the water movement be captured, but there's also a sort of ethereal glow, especially in the top waterfall picture.

Buttermilk Falls is one of our favorite places to hike. We get up early in the morning, pack a picnic, hike and then jump in the lake to cool off. We follow that with a trip to Ithaca Brewery for a salad and a burger and then the perfect end to the day: Purity Ice Cream.
Life is good when you live within driving distance of the Finger Lakes!

Thanks so much everybody!! Wow, so gorgeous! How do you get that "look" in your waterfall pictures? I totally laughed when I read your description of your daughter jumping with her poncho on!! The waterfall pictures require a long exposure time to blur the water. I had a tripod and because it was midday and sunny, I had to use an additional filter that made the scene darker and allowed for a longer exposure time. The filter is just a piece of darkened glass that goes in front of the lens.

In this picture the lighting was uneven - so that's why one of the small cascades was lit up by light, but the rest was dark. Uneven lighting can be a pain to work with, but I liked how it worked out in this picture. Also, with a long exposure it helped capture the green reflection from the trees.

I didn't realize the green was reflected from the trees -- though that makes a lot of sense now. I always like uneven lighting in photos, I especially liked to play around with dramatic highlights and black black backgrounds in black and white film photography. I love my digital camera but I feel like nothing compares to my old film photos.

Perfect! I thought it seemed like a nice place to live. We didn't make it to Purity Ice Cream, but did eat at the brewery. I liked it but my husband was grumpy about it (he said small portions for higher prices). Their hard cider was good.

My favorite is when we're hiking in the woods (which always has uneven light - can be a blessing or a curse, lol) and I find a dark background with one flower or plant lit up.

thanks for the explanations... I like taking landscape and scenery photos, but sometimes I get too much contrast so they don't 'feel' right to me when I look at the photos as opposed to what it felt like actually being there (if you know what I mean). It sounds like perhaps I need to get a filter to filter out some of the harshness of the AZ daylight. (a tripod would be nice, too-- I sometimes 'pull up on' or 'jerk' the camera when I press the button, I think.)

It sounds like perhaps I need to get a filter to filter out some of the harshness of the AZ daylight. (a tripod would be nice, too-- I sometimes 'pull up on' or 'jerk' the camera when I press the button, I think.) It all comes down to light and sometimes you see a beautiful scene in front of you but because of light or something else it just won't translate well to a picture. I've been interested in photography for 10+ years and I have loads and loads of pictures that just didn't work. It can be pretty disappointing to get back from some place beautiful and take a look at your pics and they are all "meh". I think the more experience you get you start to get a better feel and understanding for what works and looking for the best light. Things that help: - shooting at the "golden hours" - a few hours after sunrise and a few hours before sunset. The angle of the sun makes more pleasing light and shadows - sometimes it's just unavoidable shooting in midday and it can help to use a polarizer. Effectiveness will depend on angle to sun and subject, but it can help cut haze and add some contrast to a flat sky. Drawback is sometimes it's easy to overdo it and potential vignetting - tripod is essential for lower light situations, but I don't always use it. I know some photographers also use a tripod, but often I'm snapping photos when we're hiking and unless there is a need for a tripod, I don't use it. Generally I can hand hold to 1/125 for stationary subjects. Don't hold your breath when taking a picture; take a deep breath and take the picture while slowly exhaling - I don't like editing so I try to get what I want when I'm taking the picture. But even if I can minimize editing, it's pretty much unavoidable. I always shoot RAW to capture more data - this is useful for adjusting highlights and shadows in post (especially if a challenging scene/lighting). Sometimes editing can help a flat photo too.
