Beautiful pics of a beautiful place - NY is not just Manhattan! I actually grew up in Nebraska and I've lived in NY for fifteen years. Before moving here when I heard NY I just thought NYC and Buffalo (because of the Bills). There is so much more - it really is a lovely state.

Beautiful! We are within a few hours of the Finger Lakes. We really need to get there sometime.
Roughly what is the shutter speed on your waterfall photos? Was it a neutral density filter you used? Can you use those and handhold or do they always require a tripod? Thinking about getting one for a trip later this year but not sure I will want to lug the tripod around enough to warrant it!

You definitely should go! We went last year too (Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Parks). The parks are very accessible and you can easily visit different places. I was surprised last year that Watkins Glen was right in the downtown. In Ithaca too there were waterfalls smack dab in the middle of civilization. I would have to look at the pictures for the shutter speed data - but I'm guessing anywhere from 3-10 seconds. I found that even if I could get longer shutter times, it didn't affect the final picture. If anything, it was worse because it left the picture more susceptible to wind blowing and blurring the leaves in the picture. The filter was a neutral density filter (that particular one was a 6 stop Lee filter - not sure if I will get the same one or the 10 stop filter). You could hand hold a filter in front of the camera, but if you are taking a picture with a filter to get longer exposure times, then you will need a tripod anyway. The tripod can be a hassle, but it's pretty much essential to waterfall pictures. You could always try one of those little Gorilla Pods - they are more compact and lighter. The good thing about these falls and trails is that they aren't that long, so it's not bad to carry a tripod. And although we hiked a longer trail to get to one of the falls, it's also easily accessible from a different parking.

I had a laugh at this picture .... my daughter likes jumping in pictures and I didn't even think about it with the poncho. This is like one of the Pinterest "Nailed It!" pictures. We were in Ithaca, NY for Memorial Day weekend (in the Finger Lakes area in western NY). Such a beautiful part of the state! Lots of gorges, waterfalls, and state parks. Fairy tale setting in Buttermilk Falls State Park: Buttermilk Falls State Park (right before I busted my brand new filter, ARGH!): Lower Falls at Robert Treman State Park. This one is roped off with a lifeguard for swimming - pretty sweet swimming hole!: Lucifer Falls in Robert Treman State Park. The stone walls, steps, and bridges are also really nice along the trail: One of my favorite flowers - forget-me-nots: I think this is Dame's Rocket? Pretty, but considered a noxious weed: Stream on Edwards Lake Cliff Preserve: On our way home we went to the Corning Museum of Glass, which was fantastic. This piece was my favorite in the Contemporary Art Wing. It's called Carrion: The funniest thing just happened. When I cam upon the picture above, I thought that I had taken it and that somehow it got on this site. We were just there this past Thursday and I took the same photo. Is that the most amazing place ever!

We were just there this past Thursday and I took the same photo. Is that the most amazing place ever! I loved the museum. We were there for 3 hours or so - I easily could've spent more time but was vetoed (I think my husband and daughter were tired). My daughter made an ornament and was so excited. Great museum!

My heart started skipping a beat and a smile eased its way to a grin looking at your lovely pictures. That area via your pictures just sealed the deal on a trip we have had brewing in our minds. Thank you for sharing your lovely passion with us.
Holy cats, that poncho picture is all kinds of wonderful. I love her pure joy, the Moab shirt rocks and then the shoes matching the cast, ha.

Your waterfall pictures are gorgeous.
The poncho picture is fantastic. I looked at it and my 55 year old mind thought "I remember what it was like to have that much energy and zest for life."

Thanks so much everybody!! Wow, so gorgeous! How do you get that "look" in your waterfall pictures? I totally laughed when I read your description of your daughter jumping with her poncho on!! The waterfall pictures require a long exposure time to blur the water. I had a tripod and because it was midday and sunny, I had to use an additional filter that made the scene darker and allowed for a longer exposure time. The filter is just a piece of darkened glass that goes in front of the lens. beautiful pics! how long was your exposure? can you link us to the filter you used?

The filter is just a piece of darkened glass that goes in front of the lens. beautiful pics! how long was your exposure? can you link us to the filter you used? I don't recall off the top of my head how long the exposures were. Probably somewhere between 3-10 seconds. This is the filter I used: Lee Little StopperI also bought the frame holder specific for these filters. They are large square filters that slide into a frame that is attached to the lens. Some companies also make filters that attach directly to the lens, but obviously these aren't as useful if you are using different lenses. It is one of the more expensive ones. I had a set of Conkin filters for a long time (I don't use the neutral density filter all that often) and they are much more reasonably priced, but they give a red cast to the photos that I found difficult to remove in post processing. The filter I had was also really scratched up, so I decided to upgrade. This was the first time using the new filter and I loved it, but then promptly broke it. Argh! I'm trying to decide if I should replace it with the same filter or get the Big Stopper (but no matter what it will be another Lee filter).

Lovely pictures in a lovely setting. I was stationed at Griffiss AFB (Rome NY) 1986-88. It was my first time in that part of the country and it really is spectacular. Almost 30 years later I'm finally going to visit NYC. Definitely polar opposites of the state of New York.
