Has anyone tried thinned acrylic paint for splattering? I don't want to go buy a bunch of misters when I already have lots of acrylic paints leftover from my tole painting days.

I've used it. I've done it where I've thinned it down with a bit of water and I've used it straight out of the bottle. I just use a paint brush to get my splatters. I particularly like it when I don't want a shiny/sparkly finish.

I do it on almost every creation with gesso, acrylic paint, watercolors, etc. You can see a post I wrote about how I do it here. No need to use misters. In fact, they don't work as well IMO. Creating Splatters and DripsHope that helps.

I've been thinking of trying this. I can't bring myself to spend $6 for a bottle of mist when I know they often clog.

I would go ahead and try it. I think that we forget about the resources that we have at hand when we scrap. Just because Susie Scrapbooker who has a YouTube video channel is making splatters with mists, feel free to try splatters with ink refills that you've diluted a bit, acrylic paints, and even with fabric dyes. We should feel like we can do this stuff with what we have. I refuse to buy another Mr. Huey just because I want to be like someone else.

I have tried making my own mists but to be honest it's never been a complete success and now I use Artiste Spritzing inks which I love, although they don't have a huge range of colours yet.

I love your explanations. I just signed up to follow your blog. I have a whole drawer full off paint I use for Cub Scouts. I might as well use it for scrapping too. I don't seem to do well with the misters.

Yes, I have used both acrylics and watercolors to make splatters and they work well.

I use acrylic paint all the time. I often use an old tooth brush to spatter with. I also water it down to watercolour consistency and use it to colour with.
I have never bothered to put it in a mister. I think it would probably dry out and clog the sprayer.

Facepalm..why didn't I think of this before. I use watercolors, etc..never thought about using for splatters. And hello how many bottles of paint do I own. Wow now I don't have to spend more $$ on those bottles.
