Even when I was in Germany I never shopped at Aldi's. They were always having food recalls. I preferred Globus. Stateside I have discovered HEB and love it! They have fresh salsa, tortillas, potstickers and really beautiful and affordable flower arrangements. Their produce and fish department are really good, too. HEB is a great store. I rarely shop anyplace else. Their produce is the best of all the stores in my town.

I just don't like shopping at Aldi.....their ads' talk about the savings to be made but I don't really see that against my regular grocery store - and I can't get the range of things there that I usually buy. Not keen on the checkout system either, I much prefer being able to bag things as they come through instead of having everything put back in the trolley all at great speed, and having to bag them afterwards at a counter.

I've never been to Texas, so I've never seen a HEB store. And if you all keep talking about cockroaches I never will visit Texas. The only cockroach I have ever seen in my life was in a museum, and even that was one time too many! Blech! Those things freak me out. I'm scratching my head about the cockroaches. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw one. Not sure what that's about. Lol I was just responding to the other posts about them.

Ours are set up differently. You unload your groceries onto the belt, the cashier scans them and puts them back into your shopping cart for you. Then you walk over to a long bagging counter where you can bag your goods as quickly or as slowly as you would like. That would be preferable (but still not ideal). Our cashier scans them then practically chucks them onto this little area at the end of the belt that barely holds 4 items, and you have to chuck them into your trolley as quickly as she scans, otherwise there is no room. THEN you have to take your trolley over to the bagging counter and put it into bags yourself. I still prefer all the other supermarkets that bag the groceries for you. Aldi is the only one I've ever been to that doesn't. Yeah, what you are describing sounds a little stressful. Aldi is the only self-bag store here as well (Well, except for self-check-out lanes at other stores.), but I don't mind that at all. That way I can pack the bags exactly how I like them to be done. In other stores I try to put items on the belt in the order I'd like them to be bagged, but it doesn't always work out that way.

I agree with all of that! A small Aldi has just opened very close to my normal supermarket but yeah, not somewhere I'll go very often. the ranges were small - if you want rice it's white or basmati and that's about it. And the thing with own brand products is that you have to take a chance on how it will taste so yeas, you can save on your biscuits, tea, sauces or whatever but if they taste disgusting you either have to plough through the rest of the packet/jar not enjoying it or throw it away which is wasteful. You'd have to do that with a lot of products before you found which ones are acceptable and you were happy to continue buying. And inevitably you'll end up buying sone things from there but going to your regular place for the rest of it - and I'm too lazy for that! I'm not convinced

OK, everyone needs to stop talking about wonderful HEB since I can't go there!! And I only brought up the unmentionables because Conchita was so sweet about inviting me to Texas. I had to tell her why I won't go, lol. And fwiw, I had never asked about them in particular, it was just what one Pea posted when I asked about Texas in general. Sorry for the hijack. I'm actually off to Aldi today, lol.

I still love Aldi. But now that I'm couponing at Harris Teeter, I don't go; my weekly savings are at about 35% a week now. I like the poster who mentioned going once a month for the staples; we have two really nice ones about 20 minutes from us, so that's a good reminder to pop over there for those items.

My Aldi always has the staples I use... Flour, sugar, oils, spices, baking soda, butter, milk, eggs, cream cheese, sour cream, etc. I get the rest of my groceries (except for most meat) at Meijer, which is right across the street. It's very convenient for me and saves me a good chunk... Especially around the holidays or when I'm doing a good deal of baking.

I've only been to Aldi once and wasn't impressed - dirty, small, rotted produce, surly lazy help - no thanks.
But HEB is great! Their low-price division is near us. A bit limited selection but great produce and meat, and very low prices. By Sunday evening it looks like a hurricane is coming - shelves stripped of bread, milk, etc, but you know everything is fresh.
Central Market is wonderful for fancy things and regular HEB is my favorite for day to day shopping.
The head of HEB (Scott from the commercials if you're local) was in our neighborhood touring our flood damaged store. I'm told he walked the neighborhood handing out gift cards to people who had been flooded.

Conchita.....I already LOVED shopping at the regular HEBs when we lived in San Antonio, so when we visit, I bring a cooler to stock up! Then several years ago, we were driving along and saw our first HEB *PLUS***We spent 2 hours in there!!!!! Hubby & I had fun picking out A&M merch, along with a million other things!!! I kept saying "omg, HEB has CLOTHES now?!?" i'm with TXMary on the roaches....never saw any all the years we lived in San Antonio, so don't worry, everybody! I WAS bitten by a scorpion once, and....OMG...the intense PAIN was sooo bad, but went away in about 20 minutes It was the middle of the night when that asshole scorpion bit me, and DH was outta town....there was also no google then for me to do research, plus I was panicked!!!!! I called a nurse friend because I was afraid it was poisonous & I'd die ....

I love my Aldi. With very few exceptions, they always have everything I need.

I have honestly never been to an Aldi, nor can I remember even seeing one. Am I remembering that you are near Ft Hood? If so, there is an Aldi in Temple on 31st Street in the old Circuit City. I wouldn't make a special trip to go though if I were you. It's very small.

Now that we have our own Sam's, I really don't go to Temple much . I've only seen a few large cockroaches since being in Texas. It's the June bugs I hate .

A friend in our Rescue Group just posted that ALDI has cooling mats for doggies!! I wish I'd known, because I paid a LOT more for this one from a doggie website....the ALDI one looks EXACTLY like this one, so I assume they're the same quality.

I love Aldi but I do wish they would carry some of their seasonal items like coconut all year.

I wouldn't make a special trip to go though if I were you. It's very small. An Aldi's in an old Circuit City?? That sounds really depressing. I hated Circuit City because their stores were so ugly and that horrible greige colour. I've been to some really horrible Aldi's and some nice, new ones. They can be really hit or miss. Dh and I found a few good ones when we lived in the Chicago suburbs, and I'd stock up on items for baking, some dairy, decent produce (when available), kitchen items like aluminum foil/pie tins, etc. Some of their canned and jarred items were really awesome--beans, tomato sauce, special vinegars (I do haricots verts with a hot bacon-balsamic vinaigrette and use an inexpensive balsamic vinegar instead of wasting our really good $$$ vinegar on a dish where the vinegar is heated) I was a frequent poster and member of Cooking Light's huge online community among others, including Southern Living before that site imploded, and posters would share their favourite must buy items from stores like Trader Joe's, Aldi's, HEB, Central Market, Wegman's, etc. which is how I first learned about Aldi's. When dh and I first saw an Aldi's, we would have never guessed that it was a supermarket--it was hidden in a defunct old mall that was slowly rebuilding, and there were no product advertisements and sale signs in the windows like regular grocery stores. Dh and I have had a lot of fun checking out different regional and specialty grocery stores when we travel. I told him about HEB and Central Market when he went to Texas, and he called me all excited about the salsa, hot sauces, and Tex Mex hot deli items he had discovered for his dinner that night. I think dh would move to Texas just for HEB--the BBQ and Tex Mex would be a close second, but dh kept talking about the fresh tortillas and the huge variety of ethnic ingredients. I'm sure if dh hadn't flown to Texas, that he would have filled our car up with boxes of fresh peppers, Mexican cheeses, and tortillas. My MIL used to purchase a couple of pounds of shelled pecans at a local nut company in SC and put them in my Christmas stocking as a surprise every year when dh and I lived in Chicago. A pound of pecan halves was around $12, but these pecans were so fresh and delicious! Then I took her to Trader Joe's where she saw their huge aisle of nuts and dried fruits. Their prices were so cheap, and I loved the packages of lightly salted and roasted pecan bits since they were the perfect size for sprinkling on my ice cream or *gasp* in my congealed jello salad--black cherry jello powder, crushed pineapple, whipped cream or cool whip, pecans. Sadly the nut place went out of business. I prefer to go to Trader Joe's at night or on weekday mornings during off peak hours. Even our newest Trader Joe's in Raleigh in a strip mall has annoying parking. The deals are worth the hassle, but dh and I pass two SuperTargets, multiple grocery stores, Sam's, BJ's Warehouse, and two Whole Foods to get to the areas 3 Trader Joe's, so we just go to TJ's to stock up on certain items like nuts, dried fruit, frozen haricots verts, frozen artichoke heart quarters, frozen meals for dh's lunches, grass fed beef, and more healthy snacks. Super Target has really great deals on items like Amy's Organic frozen dinners and pizzas, which are our favourite staples that we'd get at TJ's when we lived in Chicago and had one right down the street from us.
