So my grandparents lived in the thriving metropolis of Dunsmuir, California for 20 years and my cousins and I are going to meet up there to reminisce and see what the haps are. I am driving from Portland and want to stop at Crater Lake (I am stunned that during the countless drives to and from Dunsmuir -at least 3x a year for 18 years) we never stopped there, so I want to see it this time! i will be stopping at Rice Hill en route and also Ashland, but does anyone have any suggestions for other stops or must sees in and around the area of Dunsmuir or Crater Lake? I would love to see some antique stores, and I remember my mom loved McLoud when we visited and of course we will head to Mt. Shasta (crossing my fingers the Thrifty store is still there and they still have an ice cream counter), are there any waterfalls in the area? The only one I can find it is not legal to access right now, and although I am willing to risk going, no one else is. i realize this is a huge long shot, because I can't imagine anyone has ever had Dunsmuir as a vacation destination, but maybe you all will have some info about Crater Lake? thanks!

I grew up in Seattle and we would drive to visit my grandma in a tiny town outside of Medford. Rice Hill was THE BEST place to stop for ice cream! They served huge scoops!
Near Crater Lake is Diamond Lake but not sure if it was you are looking for....?

In Albany, Oregon (right off Hwy 5) there is a huge store with all kinds of vintage and antique stuff. It is very fun to wander around it. I think it's called Albany Antique Mall. It is in the old downtown area. About 25 miles east of Salem is Silver Falls State Park. It has a beautiful waterfall. It is a very short "hike" from the parking lot. The path even goes behind the waterfall. It would be fun to grab some sandwiches in Salem and have lunch at this very beautiful park. The park is located in a temperate rainforest and is so green. Berry season is just starting. Depending when you're going, you might be able to pick some berries too.

when are you going, one June I hit crater lake and there was 6 ft of snow in the parking lot.... just saying. a little ways from shasta is Burney Falls State park. beautiful falls,...lava tubes nearby to explore (east of town)...you can swim and float at burney falls. Hat creek has world class fly fishing. and the pacific crest trail.
jackson Oregon is a historic town..part of the stage road and I think it has antiques. Yreka has an interesting gold mining history..on the way home, stop at hiway 58--10 minutes east of I-5 is my friend's farm stand...River Bend Farms. she has great produce, fruit..and if there are any left...filberts. jams and other items.

Thanks for the tips! We used to go to Yreka, I had forgotten all about that. We also used to go to Some place I think was called the Nut House, I don't remember for sure and my family is convinced I mean Harry and David's, but that was not it. I remember lots of porches and rocking horses on the porches. Does anyone know anything about that? I can't imagine it would even still exist, but I sure would like to know it once did!
Going to check out Burney Falls for sure!
Since I live near PDX I have spent quite a bit of time in Salem and love Silver Falls Park. This will be the first time in almost 20 years I have been further south than Salem by car though.
Man, I would love to see snow! I seriosuly might cry with joy! We had such a pitiful winter, the weathermen didn't even tease us with talks of snow like the usually do!
Adding Jackson to the list of cities to visit! Sounds great! The farm stand sounds lovely took I am sure the family would all enjoy that!
